Recommended drives
First visit: Ryotsu Port past Onogame and Senkaku Bay to the Osado Skyline in a day
Leave Ryotsu Port and stop at Michi-no-Eki Ai-Port Sado, a roadside station. Follow the Sado Isshu Line around the northern tip of the island to Futatsugame and Onogame. Head south along Sotokaifu, stopping at Hiranezaki and Senkaku Bay Ageshima Park. From Sado Gold Mine, climb the Osado Skyline to Hakuundai. On the way back, descend to the Kanai side and pass Toki Forest Park on the way to Ryotsu Port.
The route is about 125 km, with around 3 hours 45 minutes of driving. Distance and time are calculated from map data and exclude traffic.
Sado's roads are narrower than those on the mainland, and there are many tunnels.
When the Osado Skyline is closed
In 2025 the Osado Skyline closed for winter on 14 November at 15:00. The 2026 closure date had not been announced on 1 November. Once it closes, you cannot go up to Hakuundai, and the Hakuundai visitor centre also closes.
After the closure, return from Sado Gold Mine to Ryotsu Port on Route 350. The full route is then about 116 km, with around 3 hours 30 minutes of driving. Toki Forest Park drops off the route.

From 13 October to 31 December, car ferries leave Ryotsu Port at 05:30, 09:15, 12:45, 16:05 and 19:30. On the way out, the 06:00 sailing from Niigata reaches Ryotsu at 08:30.
