Shiretoko occupies the peninsula between the Sea of Okhotsk and the Nemuro Strait in eastern Hokkaido. Utoro, in Shari, is the base for the Shiretoko Five Lakes and Furepe Falls; the Shiretoko Crossroad climbs over Shiretoko Pass to Rausu on the other side. Memanbetsu and Nemuro Nakashibetsu airports are the main gateways. This guide follows a one-day drive from Shari along the coast to Utoro and the Five Lakes, with roads, stops and seasonal access conditions.

Recommended drives

A first visit: Shari to Utoro and the Five Lakes in a day

Start at Michi-no-Eki Shari, stop at the Road to Heaven viewpoint, then follow Route 334 beside the Sea of Okhotsk to Oshinkoshin Falls and Michi-no-Eki Utoro Shirietoku. Continue to Oronko Rock, then walk to Furepe Falls from the Shiretoko Nature Center before driving up the Shiretoko Park Road to the Five Lakes. The route is about 61 km, with roughly one hour of driving. These map-based estimates exclude traffic and stops. Return by the same road.

The Five Lakes' published autumn opening schedule ends on 8 November. The approach road has a later winter closure, scheduled from 16:00 on 1 December 2026; this does not extend the lakes' visitor season. The road beyond the lakes towards Kamuiwakka has been closed since 1 October.

Crossing Shiretoko Pass to Rausu

The Shiretoko Crossroad is Route 334 between the Yunosawa gate in Rausu and the Iwaobetsu gate in Shari, a 23.8 km section. The 2026 schedule has overnight closures from 16:00 to 9:00 through the night of 3 November. Full winter closure is scheduled from 16:00 on 4 November, with reopening planned for late April 2027; the actual reopening date will be announced separately.

When the pass is open, Rausu to Utoro is 27.4 km, about 35 minutes. The winter detour via Konpoku Pass is 129.8 km, about 2 hours 20 minutes. Check current road restrictions before setting out: the seasonal schedule does not guarantee daytime access.

The pass is 4–5°C colder than the towns, and temperatures often fall below freezing in early November. Ice can close the road even to vehicles fitted with winter tyres.

If you see a brown bear

Stay in the car, do not feed the bear and do not approach it. Do not stop on a sharp bend to watch or take photographs. Continue past when it is safe to do so; if a bear blocks your path, stay inside rather than attempting to pass it at close range.

In Shiretoko National Park, approaching a bear within 30 m or following it within 50 m is subject to restrictions. Ignoring a Ministry of the Environment officer's instruction to stop such behaviour can lead to a fine of up to ¥300,000. An unintentional encounter followed by an immediate retreat is among the exceptions.
