The Zao mountains straddle Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures. From Togatta Onsen on the Miyagi side, the Zao Echo Line crosses the mountains, with a detour to Okama crater lake before descending towards Zao Onsen in Yamagata. The crossing is seasonal: winter closure is scheduled from 17:00 on 4 November 2026 to 11:00 on 23 April 2027. This guide covers a one-day drive across the mountains, winter alternatives and the roads and stops along the way.

Recommended drives

Cross from Miyagi via Okama to Yamagata before the winter closure

Start at Michi-no-Eki Murata and head to Togatta Onsen. Climb the Zao Echo Line, stopping at Takimidai and Komakusadaira, then take the Zao High Line to the Katta summit car park for the view of Okama. Descend the Echo Line on the Yamagata side, visit Zao Onsen and Nishi-Zao Park, and finish at Michi-no-Eki Yamagata Zao. It is about 83 km, with roughly 1 hour 40 minutes of driving. These map-based estimates exclude traffic and stops.

Until the winter closure begins, the Echo Line has nightly closures from 17:00 to 8:00. The High Line costs ¥600 for a regular car and ends its autumn operating day at 16:00, so arrive at the tollgate before then. Snow or ice can close either road during the day. Check the morning's road notice before leaving.

Visit the two sides separately from November to late April

During the winter closure, there is no direct drive across the mountains between Togatta Onsen and Zao Onsen. Travel north using Route 286 and the tolled Sasaya Tunnel on the Yamagata Expressway, or south via Route 113 and Shichikashuku. The old road over Sasaya Pass also closes for winter; use the expressway tunnel for that crossing.

On the Yamagata side, Zao Ropeway provides access to the winter snow-covered trees known as juhyo, or snow monsters, when services and weather conditions permit.

Approach from Yamagata on busy days

On fine weekends and holidays during the autumn-colour season and just before winter closure, queues from the High Line tollgate and summit car park extend down the Miyagi side. Approaching from Yamagata generally means a shorter stretch of that queue.

Best seasons and crowds

The tourism association's 29 October 2026 report put Eboshi's 1,100 m slopes and gondola area at their autumn peak. Around Takimidai, the viewing area was at its peak and the falls were at peak colour to beginning to shed leaves. Leaves near the large torii gate were beginning to turn. These are dated observations, not a prediction for your visit; the summit had already shed its leaves in the 15 October report.

  • Golden Week, summer holidays and fine autumn weekends can bring queues at the High Line tollgate and summit car park, extending down the Miyagi approach.
  • During the autumn restrictions, plan to reach the High Line tollgate before 16:00. Do not rely on arriving exactly at closing time.

  • JMA lists Zao at volcanic alert level 1: be aware that it is an active volcano. Entry to the Umanose caldera and the Okama lakeshore is prohibited.
  • The Echo Line has overnight closures and is scheduled to close for winter on 4 November at 17:00. Snow or ice may bring earlier temporary restrictions.
  • The High Line's 2026 season ends on 4 November at 16:00.
  • Route 286 over Sasaya Pass closes for winter on 4 November at 15:00.
  • Zao Ropeway's previously published maintenance schedule covers 4–13 November. Its latest notice should be checked before a visit.
