Sixteen rental branches at Hakata Station: how to choose

Hakata Station in Fukuoka has sixteen rental branches from nine companies. Only Eki Rent-a-Car is inside the station. Of the others, ten are on the Chikushi (east) side and five on the Hakata (west) side.

This page compares each branch's address, hours, walking route and rules on one-way returns, with reference prices and the return points to watch for.

  • A short walk: Eki Rent-a-Car is inside the station, at the first-floor concourse information centre until 19:00. Nissan Hakata Station Marui is two minutes from the Hakata Exit and linked to the station. Nissan Hakata Shinkansen Ekimae is straight ahead from the Chikushi Exit, two minutes away.
  • Evening pickup or return: Nissan Hakata Station Marui closes last, at 21:00, with returns until 20:30. Times and Nico Nico Hakata-Eki-Higashi 2-chome (Monday to Saturday) close at 18:00.
  • Different pickup and return branches: Nippon Hakata Station Shinkansen Chikushi is departure-only. You return the car to the Toko-bashi branch, seven minutes on foot from the Chikushi Exit.
  • Returning at another branch: Nippon (Toko-bashi and Hakata Exit), all three Toyota branches, both Orix branches, Nissan Hakata Shinkansen Ekimae and Eki Rent-a-Car handle returns to other branches. Both Nissan branches and Times do not accept cars rented elsewhere.
  • A lower base rate: on the Japanese-licence standard rates before discounts, Eki Rent-a-Car is lowest among the large companies at ¥8,470 for a compact car for 24 hours. Among smaller companies, Guts is ¥4,070 and Nico Nico ¥5,610. Guts includes no vehicle damage cover and limits mileage to 300 km per 24 hours.

At Nico Nico, an International Driving Permit (IDP) holder must handle the contract in Japanese without an interpreter or translation app, and acceptance varies by branch.

Reference rates at nine companies

These are compact-car standard rates: regular season, tax included, before discounts, on a Japanese driving licence. The 48-hour total is the first 24 hours, one further day and two days of basic collision damage waiver (CDW). Fukuoka is in Sky's Kyushu district, so its CDW is ¥1,430 a day. Guts does not publish a further-day rate.

Orix SA (Fit, Note 1.2) ¥9,900 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥20,020 ¥22,660

With a foreign licence, Toyota has a separate list: C1 is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each further 24 hours, before optional cover. Get a quote for your own licence and dates at the other companies, because these figures are not a visitor quote.

Read the driving licence guide before you book, and the CDW and NOC guide to see what basic cover leaves you paying.

Choose the branch near your station exit

The nearest branch depends on whether you leave by the Hakata (west) or Chikushi (east) side. A branch on the same side as your hotel or your next destination saves crossing the station.

  • Inside the station: Eki Rent-a-Car Hakata Station. Until 19:00, its reception is in the information centre on the first-floor concourse. From 19:00, it is on floor 4 of Shinkansen Hakata Building, to the right of the Chikushi Exit.
  • Hakata Exit: Nissan Hakata Station Marui (second floor of Hakata Marui, linked to the station, two minutes), Toyota Hakata Exit (right from the exit, opposite Kotsu Center Building), Times (about four minutes, or about three minutes from subway exit West 13), Nippon Hakata Exit (along Hakata-Ekimae-dori to the first floor of the Kamiyo Parking Ekisan Building, five minutes) and Orix Hakata Exit (five minutes).
  • Close to the Chikushi Exit: Nissan Hakata Shinkansen Ekimae (straight ahead, on the first floor of the building left of the Sun Life Hotel, two minutes), Nippon Chikushi (cross the junction ahead, then immediately left, three minutes; departure only), Orix Chikushi Exit (three minutes), Nico Nico Hakata-Eki-Higashi 2-chome (about 300 m along Chikushiguchi-Chuo-dori, then about 40 m left at the Godochosha-mae junction, second floor of the ARK Building, three minutes) and Toyota Hakata Ekimae (opposite the Oriental Hotel Fukuoka).
  • A longer walk from the Chikushi Exit: Guts (about 550 m, six minutes), Nippon Toko-bashi (left along Airport-dori and across the Mikasa River on the right, seven minutes), Sky (on Chikushi-dori, about ten minutes), Toyota Higashi IC (on Route 3, ten minutes) and Nico Nico Katakasu 5-chome (cross the bridge on Airport-dori and turn left at the Toko 2-chome junction to the ENEOS station; the branch gives about five minutes on foot, and elsewhere about seven minutes by car).

"Hakata Ekimae" does not mean the Hakata Exit: Toyota Hakata Ekimae is on the Chikushi side. Open your map using the full branch name and address.

Separate return points, closing times and vehicle size

Cars rented from Nippon Hakata Station Shinkansen Chikushi go back to the Hakata Station Shinkansen Toko-bashi branch, using return MAPCODE 13 321 726*17. If you want a lift back to the Chikushi branch, ask during departure paperwork. It can take time when busy and you cannot set a time. If your train time is fixed, plan to walk from Toko-bashi to the Chikushi Exit (seven minutes).

To return to Nippon Hakata Exit, enter MAPCODE 13 320 278*04. The car-park entrance has a height limit.

Nissan Hakata Station Marui is open until 21:00, but returns end at 20:30. It closes at 18:00 on 31 December 2026 and all day on 1 January 2027. All three Toyota branches close on 25 August, and Higashi IC also closes on 1 January.

For a large car, check the branch limits first. Nissan Marui cannot handle W5, T or M1 classes, and Nissan Hakata Shinkansen Ekimae cannot handle T3–T6 or M1 classes, because of their car parks. Toyota Hakata Exit excludes vehicles 230 cm or taller, and Toyota Hakata Ekimae vehicles 250 cm or taller, from one-way rentals.

Rent when you leave Fukuoka for a Kyushu drive

If you spend your first days around Hakata and Tenjin and rent on the morning you leave the city, you can compare taking the unused days out of the rental. Count city parking, the transfer from the airport to Hakata and the rental hours on the same basis.

If your transport changes during the trip, such as landing at the airport and leaving from Hakata Station, picking up at Fukuoka Airport and returning at Hakata is also possible. Name a branch that accepts the car rather than just "Hakata Station". Nippon Chikushi is departure-only, and Nissan and Times branches do not accept cars rented elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Eki Rent-a-Car Hakata Station is inside the station: at the first-floor concourse information centre until 19:00, and on floor 4 of Shinkansen Hakata Building from 19:00. Which branches can I use late in the evening?

No branch is open 24 hours. Nissan Hakata Station Marui closes last, at 21:00, with returns until 20:30. The others close between 18:00 and 20:00. Nico Nico Hakata-Eki-Higashi 2-chome has an after-hours return service; confirm the conditions with the branch first.

Can I return to Nippon Chikushi where I rented the car?

No. Hakata Station Shinkansen Chikushi is departure-only, and the return point is the Toko-bashi branch, seven minutes on foot from the Chikushi Exit. For a lift from Toko-bashi to the Chikushi branch, ask during departure paperwork. You cannot set a time.

What does a two-day rental cost?

For a compact car with basic CDW for two days, the Japanese-licence standard rates before discounts come to ¥17,820–¥20,790 at the seven large companies. Eki Rent-a-Car is lowest at ¥17,820. Can I return at Fukuoka Airport or another branch?

Nippon (Toko-bashi and Hakata Exit), all three Toyota branches, both Orix branches and Eki Rent-a-Car handle returns to other branches. Nissan Hakata Shinkansen Ekimae lets you rent there and return elsewhere, but does not accept cars rented elsewhere. Nissan Marui allows neither, and Times does not accept cars rented elsewhere.
