Stops and parking, in route order

Leave the car and walk Takayama's old town, Jinya and morning market

Walk between Takayama's old town, Takayama Jinya and the morning market. The municipal car parks closest to the old town are Shinmei (52 ordinary cars) and Soramachi (128 ordinary cars), both usable all day. At both, ordinary cars pay ¥150 per 30 minutes from 08:00 to 20:00, and ¥50 per hour from 20:00 to 08:00. The ground floor at Shinmei takes only vehicles up to 2.1 m high. Takayama City's website shows which municipal car parks are full. If you are staying overnight, check when booking whether your lodging has parking and how much it costs.

Takayama Jinya opens 08:45–17:00 from 1 April to 31 October (last entry 16:30), and 08:45–16:30 from 1 November to 31 March (last entry 16:00). Admission for individuals is ¥500 (free for high school students and younger), and a visit takes about 30 minutes. It closes over the New Year holidays and may close temporarily for bad weather or facility management.

Miyagawa Morning Market runs daily 07:00–12:00 (08:00–12:00 from December to March). If you walk it on the morning of day 2, first fix your departure time for Shirakawa-go, then work back to decide when to leave the market.

From Takayama to Shirakawa-go: the Chubu-Jukan Expressway is free, the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway is tolled

From around Takayama Station, follow Route 158 for about 7 km to Takayama IC. The roughly 17 km from Takayama IC to Hida-Kiyomi IC is the Chubu-Jukan Expressway (Takayama-Kiyomi Road), with no toll. Within Gifu Prefecture, the only tolled part of the Chubu-Jukan Expressway is the Abo Pass Road. At Hida-Kiyomi IC, join the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway, drive about 26 km and leave at Shirakawa-go IC. This section is tolled, and the toll depends on ETC use and holiday discounts.

Hida-Kawai PA, on the inbound side you use on the way back, has vending machines and toilets but no fuel station.

From Shirakawa-go IC to the Seseragi Park village car park is about 5 km, normally about 10 minutes. Set car navigation to "Deai-no-Yakata" (2495-3 Ogimachi, Shirakawa Village, Ono District, Gifu Prefecture) and park next door. To pay ETC tolls in a rental car, you need an ETC card. See renting an ETC card.

At Shirakawa-go, use the village car park and do not drive into the village

Cars stay out of the World Heritage area from 09:00 to 16:00. The rule covers taxis and rental cars as well as private cars.

Park at the Seseragi Park village car park (about 200 ordinary cars, about 40 large vehicles, about 40 motorcycles). It opens 08:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30). Fees are ¥2,000 for ordinary cars, ¥500 for motorcycles and ¥10,000 for buses. It cannot be booked, and you can pay by cash, credit card, e-money or code payment.

When it is busy, follow the attendants to Midashima Park temporary car park (120 ordinary cars) or Terao temporary car park (420 ordinary cars). On days with many buses, such as in the autumn-colour season, spaces for ordinary cars may be reduced.

Overnight parking and sleeping in vehicles are not allowed. Guests staying in the village can drive to their lodging, but preferably after 16:00. Tour bus spaces become bookable-only from 1 December 2026; ordinary cars are not affected.

Walk the village, and walk or take the shuttle to the lookout

Next to the car park is Deai Bridge, 107 m long. Cross it and the entrance to the gassho-zukuri village is about 5 minutes away. Normal visiting hours are 08:00–17:00, and after 17:00 only guests staying in the village may be there. About 500 people live here. Open flames are strictly banned, and smoking is allowed only at designated places. Flying drones without permission is also banned. Take your rubbish home.

As a guide to time, the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association's guided tour walks the village and enters one facility in under 2 hours.

The car park at Ogimachi Castle Site lookout, above the village, is closed for the time being, and cars cannot enter. Walk to the lookout, about 15 minutes each way, or take the shuttle bus.

The shuttle costs ¥300 one way (cash on board). It leaves from beside Hakusuien, 3 minutes' walk south of Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal. Buses to the lookout run every 20 minutes from 09:00 to 15:40 (none in the 12:00 hour; restarting at 13:20). Buses to Ogimachi run from 09:10 to 16:10. They may be delayed or cancelled by snow, ice or poor visibility. Since March 2024, pets cannot ride.

Open season and road restrictions

From early December to late March, plan on winter tyres and chains

Shirakawa-go requires winter tyres from early December to late March. It is a heavy-snow area, and even with no lying snow early in the season, melted snow refreezes and leaves many slippery places. Always fit studless tyres; having chains ready or a 4WD vehicle is also recommended. Even a 4WD has ordinary tyres, and once it starts to slide it behaves like any other car.

On expressways in winter you are asked to fit winter tyres and also carry chains, and snowfall can bring speed limits or closures. Under chain restrictions, chains are required even with winter tyres. If you stop in a jam or after an accident, you cannot turn the engine off because of the heater, and you use more fuel than expected, so refuel early.

Restrictions on the Chubu-Jukan Expressway and Route 41 appear on the Takayama National Highway Office's "Hida-michi Guide".

Rental branches each set the period when winter tyres are standard. At Toyota Rent-a-Lease Gifu in front of Takayama Station, it is 1 December to 31 March, and this may change. If snow is forecast just before or after that period, ask your branch to arrange winter tyres or chains.

On days of heavy snow or road closures, drop the trip to Shirakawa-go and walk Takayama instead.

Do not drive into Shirakawa-go village from 09:00 to 16:00

Cars stay out of the World Heritage area from 09:00 to 16:00, including taxis and rental cars. Local residents, delivery companies and others still drive there during those hours. Guests staying in the village can drive to their lodging, but preferably after 16:00. When the car park is full, do not wait on the shoulder of the national road. Follow the attendants to the temporary car parks.

On winter illumination days you cannot enter Shirakawa-go without a booking

The 41st Shirakawa-go Illumination takes place on four days in 2027: Monday 11 January (a public holiday), Sunday 17 January, Sunday 24 January and Sunday 31 January, 17:30–19:30. Viewing needs an advance booking and an entry ticket. Without a booking, you cannot view, park, or get in or out of a vehicle on the road. On these days, gates go up at the entrances to Shirakawa-go from 15:30, and people without tickets cannot enter.

An entry ticket lets you walk the village, but the lookout needs a separate lookout ticket. This comes with eligible lodging plans or route-bus operators' tours and is not sold on its own. The event may be cancelled if a severe cold wave threatens major traffic disruption.

Daytime sightseeing by ordinary car needs no booking. However, on the day the car park's last entry is 15:00, and all cars must leave by 17:00.

Parking reservations for ordinary cars in the first round (on sale 10 September 2026) have sold out. The second round goes on sale at 13:00 on 1 December 2026. On illumination days, the Seseragi Park village car park is reserved for booked buses from 17:00, and ordinary cars move to the Terao temporary car park by 15:00.

The lodging lottery took email applications from 1 to 31 October 2026 and is now closed. Results are scheduled for 10 November and go to winners only. An additional round is set for 13:00 on 26 November but will not take place unless winners decline or cancel.

Takayama Festival days bring traffic restrictions in the city

The Takayama Festival takes place on 14 and 15 April (the spring Sanno Festival) and 9 and 10 October (the autumn Hachiman Festival). During the festivals, traffic restrictions apply in the city and some car parks cannot be used. If you are staying during a festival, ask your lodging whether you can drive to its car park.

Best seasons and crowds

Shirakawa-go is busiest during the May holidays, Obon (the mid-August holiday), the autumn-colour season from late October to early November, and the New Year holidays. Cars waiting for parking jam the national road. At the peak around 12:00 the queue can reach the Shirakawa-go IC exit, and some days it takes over 2 hours to park. At these times, cut the morning market short if necessary and leave Takayama so that you arrive before 10:00 at the latest. Shirakawa Village's website has a crowd forecast for the next three months, plus live cameras of the car parks and Route 156, so you can check the road before you leave.

If you come from Nagoya, the recommended road leaves the expressway at Shokawa IC, one before Shirakawa-go IC, and runs north on Route 156. It follows the left bank of Lake Miboro with good views, and you enter the car park from the opposite lane to the parking queue. In winter, snow falls from December to March and covers the village. From winter evenings onwards, the village does not accept visitors except illumination participants and guests staying in the village.

From Nagoya or Kanazawa, and on snowy days

From Nagoya in your own car, visit Shirakawa-go on the morning of day 1, then move to Takayama in the afternoon and stay there. This lets you walk the morning market without hurrying on day 2. Nagoya to Shirakawa-go takes about 2 hours 15 minutes (about 1 hour 30 minutes to Shokawa IC and about 45 minutes from there).

From Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go is about 1 hour 10 minutes away, or about 75 minutes from central Kanazawa in light traffic. Whether you can rent in Kanazawa and return in Takayama, and the cost of this one-way rental, differ by company and branch, so check before booking.

From Tokyo, take Matsumoto IC on the Nagano Expressway, then Route 158 and the Abo Pass Road to Takayama. Matsumoto IC to Shirakawa-go IC takes about 2 hours 10 minutes, and Shirakawa-go is about 5 minutes further. Route 158 has been closed in Nyukawa, Takayama, since a landslide on 25 February 2026, with no reopening date. Takayama City asks ordinary cars from the Kanto side heading to central Takayama to use the wider detour via Routes 41, 471 and 361, so allow extra time.

On days with snow or ice forecast, check Chubu-Jukan Expressway restrictions on the "Hida-michi Guide" before you leave. If the road is closed or snow is heavy, drop the Shirakawa-go trip and walk Takayama instead. You can check the snow at Shirakawa-go on Shirakawa Village's live cameras before you leave.

Return routes and fuel

To return from Shirakawa-go to Takayama, go back through Shirakawa-go IC, Hida-Kiyomi IC and Takayama IC, about 55 km. To head home to Nagoya in your own car, join the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway at Shirakawa-go IC without returning to Takayama. For Kanazawa, also go north from Shirakawa-go IC.

Hida-Kawai PA, on the inbound side from Shirakawa-go IC back towards Takayama, has no fuel station. Shirakawa Village has two fuel stations, in the north and south of the village. Fill up before leaving Takayama, and keep the tank close to full in winter.

Without a car: rent at Takayama Station

Toyota Rent-a-Lease Gifu's Takayama Ekimae branch is 1 minute on foot from the west exit of Takayama Station and opens 08:00–20:00 (09:00–17:30 from 1 to 3 January). You need an International Driving Permit or other accepted licence. The branch lends ETC cards and handles one-way rentals within and outside the prefecture. W4 class cars, buses and 1No. class trucks cannot be one-way.

To pick up at 08:00 and reach Shirakawa-go before 10:00, the paperwork and drive must fit within 2 hours. To leave in the 07:00 hour, you could pick up the day before and leave the car at your lodging, but the rental period is longer.

Work out when to leave Shirakawa-go from your return time. For example, to return in Takayama at 15:00, allow 90 minutes from Shirakawa-go to Takayama (about 50 minutes in light traffic plus some spare time), 30 minutes for refuelling and paperwork, and another 30 minutes spare, and leave Shirakawa-go at 12:30. If your contract requires a full tank, refuel near the return branch.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the whole route take?

Takayama Station to the Shirakawa-go car park is about 55 km, about 50 minutes in light traffic. Allow 2–3 hours for walking Takayama on day 1, and 2–3 hours for the village and lookout at Shirakawa-go on day 2, leaving Shirakawa-go in the early afternoon.

Are there any charges?

The Chubu-Jukan Expressway from Takayama IC to Hida-Kiyomi IC is free, and the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway from Hida-Kiyomi IC to Shirakawa-go IC is tolled. Shirakawa-go parking is ¥2,000 for ordinary cars. Takayama municipal car parks are ¥150 per 30 minutes from 08:00 to 20:00. Takayama Jinya is ¥500 for individuals (free for high school students and younger), and the lookout shuttle is ¥300 one way.

Can I do it as a day trip?

You can see Shirakawa-go alone in a day, but including both the morning market and a walk around Takayama is easier with a night in Takayama. On a day trip, leave so that you reach Shirakawa-go before 10:00, then walk Takayama in the afternoon.

Can I drive it in winter?

Yes, but from early December to late March plan on winter tyres and carrying chains. Snowfall can bring speed limits or closures; on those days, drop the trip to Shirakawa-go.

Can I see the Shirakawa-go illumination?

In 2027 it takes place on four days, 11, 17, 24 and 31 January, and needs an advance booking and entry ticket. The second round of parking reservations for ordinary cars opens at 13:00 on 1 December 2026; the lodging lottery took applications in October. Without a booking, you cannot enter Shirakawa-go after 15:30 on those days.

If I rent a car, where should I rent it?

Renting in front of Takayama Station and returning to the same branch is simplest. If you rent in Kanazawa or Nagoya and return in Takayama, check whether this one-way rental is possible and how much it costs when booking.
