Komatsu Airport has eight rental branches: how to choose

Komatsu Airport, in Komatsu in Ishikawa Prefecture, is the airport for Kanazawa and the Kaga area. It has eight rental branches from seven companies. No branch is inside the terminal. You check in at a counter on 1F or meet staff in the arrivals lobby, and a shuttle takes you to a branch outside the airport. Most are 1–3 minutes by car, and J-Net is 8 minutes.

This page compares the counters and meeting points, closing times, returns and one-way rentals, and the reference price at each company.

  • Arriving on an evening flight: Toyota and Nico Nico close last, at 20:00, but Toyota's airport counter closes at 19:00. Nippon, Orix Komatsu Airport East and J-Net close at 19:30, Nissan at 19:00, and Orix Komatsu Airport West and Sky at 18:00.
  • Checking in at the airport: Nippon, Toyota, Orix (East and West) and Nissan check you in at a terminal counter, then a shuttle takes you to the branch. At Sky and Nico Nico, staff with a sign wait in the arrivals lobby (phone Nico Nico in advance), and J-Net collects you at a stop outside the terminal.
  • Returning somewhere else: Nippon, Toyota and Orix East allow returns at other branches. Sky allows one-way rentals to its Ishikawa branches, with a charge between Komatsu Airport and Kanazawa city branches. Orix West does not allow one-way rentals.
  • Keeping the cost down: on standard rates before discounts on a Japanese licence, Toyota is the cheapest major company at ¥8,580 for a compact for 24 hours. Nico Nico is ¥5,610, but its basic CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident.
  • Using Komatsu Station: Nico Nico and J-Net also run transfers to Komatsu Station. Book Nico Nico's in advance, and give J-Net your train's arrival time when you book or by phone.

Reference prices: standard rates at seven companies

This table takes each company's standard rate for a compact car, with the total including basic collision damage waiver (CDW). The total changes with the number of days and the cover you choose. These are regular-season rates before discounts on a Japanese licence, unless a row says otherwise.

Company and class First 24 hours Additional day Basic CDW per day 48 hours with basic CDW Minivan (7–8 seats), 24 hours
Nico Nico S (Aqua, Yaris, Roomy). Basic CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident ¥5,610 ¥5,610 ¥1,100 ¥13,420 ¥15,180
Toyota C1 (Yaris, Passo) ¥8,580 ¥7,260 ¥1,100 ¥18,040 ¥20,900
Sky S (Yaris, Fit) ¥8,800 ¥7,480 ¥1,100 ¥18,480 ¥22,000
Nippon N-B (Fit, Corolla) ¥8,910 ¥7,150 ¥1,100 ¥18,260 ¥22,550
Nissan P2 (March, Note) ¥9,790 ¥7,700 ¥1,650 ¥20,790 ¥24,090
Orix SA (Fit, Note 1.2) ¥9,900 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥20,020 ¥22,660
J-Net J3 (Yaris, Fit, Mazda2) ¥10,450 ¥8,800 ¥1,100 ¥21,450 ¥23,650
  • The 48-hour total is the first 24 hours, one additional day and two days of basic CDW. A dash means the company's rate table does not list that fee. Where basic CDW shows "Included", the rate already contains it. Extra hours, fuel, one-way fees and options such as child seats are not included.
  • Most companies offer member or online discounts, so the booking screen is often cheaper than this table. Peak periods such as Golden Week, Obon and New Year cost more. Enter your dates and class for the actual price.
  • Nico Nico's basic CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident.
  • Toyota has member discounts of 10% and 20%.
  • Sky's basic CDW varies by region: ¥1,320 in Hokkaido, ¥1,100 in Honshu and Shikoku, ¥1,430 in Kyushu and ¥1,650 in Okinawa. Members and prepayment each get 5% off.
  • Nippon has a separate member rate table.
  • Nissan's basic CDW is calculated on the Standard Plan at ¥1,650 a day.
  • Orix has member discounts and a 5% web discount.
  • J-Net's basic CDW (Anshin cover) is ¥1,650 a day in the Okinawa district only.

Prices differ by licence. The table uses the Japanese-licence rate. On a foreign licence, Toyota C1 is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each additional 24 hours, before optional cover; the Toyota row above uses the separate Japanese-licence rates of ¥8,580 and ¥7,260. The other companies in the table publish no separate foreign-licence rate here, so get a quote for your own licence.

A foreign licence needs the original licence, a 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit (or an official Japanese translation for licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan) and your passport. See driving in Japan on a foreign licence. Nico Nico accepts an International Driving Permit only at some branches, requires the renter to complete the contract in Japanese without an interpreter or translation app, and asks for an address in Japan and a phone number that can take calls. Sky rents on a Geneva Convention permit with a passport, or on a foreign licence with a Japanese translation and a passport.

From arrival to check-in: counter or meet-and-greet

The check-in process depends on the company.

  • Check in at an airport counter, then take a shuttle: Nippon (the counter opposite the arrival exit; 3 minutes by car to the branch), Toyota (the Toyota counter in the airport lobby; about 1 minute), Orix (the terminal counter; about 3 minutes to East and about 1 minute to West) and Nissan (the terminal counter; the branch is 300 m from the airport).
  • Staff wait in the arrivals lobby: at Sky, staff hold a sign, and the branch is 2–3 minutes away. If you cannot find them, phone the branch. At Nico Nico, ask for the shuttle by phone in advance (0761-23-5780 or 090-8969-6912), and staff with a sign wait in front of the Information desk in the 1F arrivals lobby. The branch is 1 minute by car.
  • Wait outside the terminal: for J-Net, leave by the door near the arrivals lobby, go right, cross the first crossing and wait at the rental car stop on the left. The shuttle comes to match your arrival, and the branch is 8 minutes by car. If you cannot find it, call 0120-33-5106.

J-Net Komatsu Airport moved to its present site (Mukai-Motoori-machi, Komatsu) on 27 April 2026, and is now 8 minutes by car from the airport. Toyota's airport counter opens 08:30–19:00 (until 18:00 on 31 December), shorter than its branch hours of 08:00–20:00. Orix East and West are separate branches, so give the full branch name at the counter. Nissan has no shuttle outside branch hours.

You can also walk to Nico Nico. Leave the terminal building, go right, cross the Komatsu Kuko-mae junction, and the petrol station is on the right.

Returning: work back from closing time and your flight

Closing times range from 18:00 to 20:00. Orix West and Sky close at 18:00, Nissan at 19:00, Nippon, Orix East and J-Net at 19:30, and Toyota and Nico Nico at 20:00. Toyota closes at 18:00 on 31 December.

Return the car to the branch you booked and take the shuttle to the airport. Set your navigation to the branch, not the airport. At Sky, be back at the branch at least 60 minutes before your flight departs. Nippon is 3 minutes by car from the airport after return. Nico Nico offers an after-hours return service, so if you may be late, check the conditions when you book.

Toyota Komatsu Airport handles one-way rentals inside and outside the prefecture, but you cannot leave the car at the airport counter. You cannot leave it in front of the terminal or in the airport car park either, so bring it to the branch and take the shuttle. Orix West does not allow one-way rentals in either direction. If you rent in Kanazawa and return at the airport, do not confuse the East and West branches.

Separate your Kanazawa stay from your drives towards Kaga

If you are heading from the airport to a hotel in the Kaga area, renting on the day you land is the natural choice. If you stay in central Kanazawa first and then go out of the city, you can also compare taking public transport from the airport and renting around Kanazawa Station the next day. Include parking on the days you do not use the car, and the rental hours.

On days you go towards Noto, do not rely on past circuit routes or journey times. Check which sections are open and whether your destinations are operating for each trip. In winter, Nissan makes studless winter tyres standard from 1 December 2026 to 31 March 2027. At other companies, check what your booking says about tyres and drive type. Do not put long round trips on your last day, and leave time to refuel, return the car and take the shuttle before your flight.

Komatsu Airport rental car FAQ

Are there rental branches inside Komatsu Airport?

No branch is inside the terminal. Nippon, Toyota, Orix and Nissan check you in at a counter on 1F and a shuttle takes you to a branch outside the airport. At Sky and Nico Nico, staff wait in the arrivals lobby, and J-Net collects you at a stop outside the terminal.

Can I still rent on a late flight?

Toyota and Nico Nico close last, at 20:00, but Toyota's airport counter closes at 19:00. Ask for Nico Nico's shuttle by phone in advance. Nissan has no shuttle outside branch hours and no service outside hours if a flight is delayed. Include check-in and transfer time, and check that your flight lands in time.

What is the difference between Orix East and West?

They are separate branches. East opens 08:00–19:30 and accepts returns at other branches. West opens 08:30–18:00 and does not allow one-way rentals. Both check you in at the terminal counter, with a shuttle of about 3 minutes to East and about 1 minute to West.

What does one night and two days cost?

On standard rates before discounts and a Japanese licence, a compact with basic CDW for two days comes to ¥18,040–¥20,790 at the five major companies. Toyota is lowest at ¥18,040. Nico Nico is ¥13,420 and J-Net ¥21,450. On a foreign licence, Toyota's base rate is higher; see the price section above.

Can I return at Kanazawa Station or another branch?

Nippon, Toyota and Orix East accept returns at other branches. Sky allows one-way rentals to its Ishikawa branches, with a charge between Komatsu Airport and Kanazawa city branches. Orix West does not allow one-way rentals. The Nissan, Nico Nico and J-Net branch pages do not cover this, so check in the booking screen that your return branch can be selected.
