Reference prices: standard rates at 11 companies

This table takes each company's published standard rate for a compact car, with the total including basic collision damage waiver (CDW). The total changes with the number of days and the cover you choose. Miyazaki is in Sky's Kyushu district, so its basic CDW is ¥1,430 a day here. These are regular-season rates before discounts on a Japanese licence, unless a row says otherwise.

Company and class First 24 hours Additional day Basic CDW per day 48 hours with basic CDW Minivan (7–8 seats), 24 hours
Guts C-1 (Vitz, March, Fit). No vehicle damage cover; 300 km per 24 hours included ¥4,070 — ¥1,100 — ¥8,580
Carsta compact (Mazda2, Vitz). The rate table does not say whether tax is included ¥4,500 ¥4,500 ¥1,100 ¥11,200 ¥11,500
Nico Nico S (Aqua, Yaris, Roomy). Basic CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident ¥5,610 ¥5,610 ¥1,100 ¥13,420 ¥15,180
Toyota C1 (Yaris, Passo) ¥8,580 ¥7,260 ¥1,100 ¥18,040 ¥20,900

J-Net J3 (Yaris, Fit, Mazda2) ¥10,450 ¥8,800 ¥1,100 ¥21,450 ¥23,650
  • The 48-hour total is the first 24 hours, one additional day and two days of basic CDW. A dash means the company's rate table does not list that fee. Where basic CDW shows "Included", the rate already contains it. Extra hours, fuel, one-way fees and options such as child seats are not included.
  • Most companies offer member or online discounts, so the booking screen is often cheaper than this table. Peak periods such as Golden Week, Obon and New Year cost more. Enter your dates and class for the actual price.
  • Guts's base rate does not include vehicle damage cover, so you pay up to ¥50,000 or ¥100,000 after an accident (waived if you take basic CDW). The NOC is ¥30,000 even if the car can be driven.
  • Guts includes 300 km per 24 hours, and each extra kilometre costs ¥11. Its table does not list a daily rate from the second day.
  • Carsta's rate table does not say whether tax is included. From the second day the charge is ¥2,250 per 12 hours, and new and hybrid cars cost 30% more.
  • Nico Nico's basic CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident.
  • Toyota has member discounts of 10% and 20%.
  • Budget has a web member price (10% off).
  • Sky's basic CDW varies by region: ¥1,320 in Hokkaido, ¥1,100 in Honshu and Shikoku, ¥1,430 in Kyushu and ¥1,650 in Okinawa. Members and prepayment each get 5% off.
  • Times has member rates of up to 20% off.
  • Nippon has a separate member rate table.
  • Nissan's basic CDW is calculated on the Standard Plan at ¥1,650 a day.
  • Orix has member discounts and a 5% web discount.
  • J-Net's basic CDW (Anshin cover) is ¥1,650 a day in the Okinawa district only.

Prices differ by licence. The table uses the Japanese-licence rate. On a foreign licence, Toyota C1 is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each additional 24 hours, before optional cover; the Toyota row above uses the separate Japanese-licence rates of ¥8,580 and ¥7,260. The other companies in the table publish no separate foreign-licence rate here, so get a quote for your own licence.

A foreign licence needs the original licence, a 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit (or an official Japanese translation for licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan) and your passport. See driving in Japan on a foreign licence. Nico Nico accepts an International Driving Permit only at some branches, requires the renter to complete the contract in Japanese without an interpreter or translation app, and asks for an address in Japan and a phone number that can take calls. Sky rents on a Geneva Convention permit with a passport, or on a foreign licence with a Japanese translation and a passport. Guts does not normally rent on an International Driving Permit. Carsta Miyazaki Airport does not rent on an International Driving Permit.

From arrival to check-in: how to call the shuttle and where to board

The shuttle stop is across the crossing outside arrivals lobby door 6, on the left of the car park. Look for the yellow rental car sign; directions from Nippon, Budget and Sky all point here.

There are three ways of getting the shuttle, depending on the company.

  • Wait at the stop: Nippon. It circulates every 15 minutes until 14:00. After 14:00, phone the branch.
  • Phone after you land: Toyota (you receive a numbered ticket at pick-up), both Orix branches, Nissan, Budget, Times (voice guidance, and no staff at the airport), Sky (5–10 minutes), J-Net, Nico Nico and Carsta (advance contact required).
  • Walk: Guts gives no shuttle information and is 6 minutes on foot from JR Miyazaki Airport Station.

Several companies' shuttles use the same stop. Do not board by company name alone; give the name of your branch and booking first. Orix has two branches, Bears and Phoenix.

Returning: work back from closing time and your flight

Closing times vary by two and a half hours, from 18:00 to 20:30. On a day you fly out late, check your branch's closing time first. Times asks you to return 1 hour before your flight.

After returning, each company's shuttle takes you to the airport: about 3 minutes by car at Nippon and about 5 minutes at Budget. Allow time for the return inspection and waiting for the shuttle, and refuel on your way to the branch so you are not rushed.

Compare renting only on your coastal driving days

If you are going straight from the airport towards Aoshima or Nichinan and on to your hotel, you can plan around collecting at the airport. If you stay in Miyazaki City on your arrival day and go to the coast the next day, moving into the city and renting the next morning is also an option. Put the shorter rental, the public transport fare and hotel parking side by side to compare.

On a day when you drive the coast and back, do not assume the return will be quick. The more stops you add on the way out, the less time you have for the last refuelling and the return. On a day you return for a flight, decide where and when sightseeing ends before adding stops.

Miyazaki Airport rental car FAQ

Are there rental counters inside Miyazaki Airport?

No. All branches are outside the airport, and you reach them by shuttle or on foot. The shuttle stop is across the crossing outside door 6, on the left of the car park.

Can I still rent on a late flight?

Nippon closes latest, at 20:30, and the others close between 18:00 and 20:00. If you land later than that, no airport branch can rent to you. Consider staying in Miyazaki City and renting the next morning. Nissan handles unstaffed rental outside hours, but without a shuttle.

What does one night and two days cost?

On standard rates before discounts and a Japanese licence, a compact with basic CDW for two days comes to ¥18,040–¥20,790 at the seven larger companies, ¥13,420 at Nico Nico and ¥11,200 at Carsta (Carsta's rate table does not say whether tax is included). Guts does not list a daily rate from the second day in its table. On a foreign licence, Toyota's base rate is higher; see the price section above.

Can I return at Miyazaki Station or another branch?

Nippon, Toyota and both Orix branches accept returns at other branches, and Carsta handles one-way rentals towards Nichinan. Fees and return branches differ by company, so name your return branch when you book.
