Reference prices: standard rates at 10 companies

This table takes each company's published standard rate for a compact car, with the total including basic collision damage waiver (CDW). The total changes with the number of days and the cover you choose. Nagasaki is in Sky's Kyushu district, so its basic CDW is ¥1,430 a day here. These are regular-season rates before discounts on a Japanese licence, unless a row says otherwise.

Company and class First 24 hours Additional day Basic CDW per day 48 hours with basic CDW Minivan (7–8 seats), 24 hours
Guts C-1 (Vitz, March, Fit). No vehicle damage cover; 300 km per 24 hours included ¥4,070 — ¥1,100 — ¥8,580

J-Net J3 (Yaris, Fit, Mazda2) ¥10,450 ¥8,800 ¥1,100 ¥21,450 ¥23,650
  • The 48-hour total is the first 24 hours, one additional day and two days of basic CDW. A dash means the company's rate table does not list that fee. Where basic CDW shows "Included", the rate already contains it. Extra hours, fuel, one-way fees and options such as child seats are not included.
  • Most companies offer member or online discounts, so the booking screen is often cheaper than this table. Peak periods such as Golden Week, Obon and New Year cost more. Enter your dates and class for the actual price.
  • Guts's base rate does not include vehicle damage cover, so you pay up to ¥50,000 or ¥100,000 after an accident (waived if you take basic CDW). The NOC is ¥30,000 even if the car can be driven.
  • Guts includes 300 km per 24 hours, and each extra kilometre costs ¥11. Its table does not list a daily rate from the second day.
  • Nico Nico's basic CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident.
  • Toyota has member discounts of 10% and 20%.
  • Budget has a web member price (10% off).
  • Sky's basic CDW varies by region: ¥1,320 in Hokkaido, ¥1,100 in Honshu and Shikoku, ¥1,430 in Kyushu and ¥1,650 in Okinawa. Members and prepayment each get 5% off.
  • Times has member rates of up to 20% off.
  • Nippon has a separate member rate table.
  • Nissan's basic CDW is calculated on the Standard Plan at ¥1,650 a day.
  • Orix has member discounts and a 5% web discount.
  • J-Net's basic CDW (Anshin cover) is ¥1,650 a day in the Okinawa district only.

Prices differ by licence. The table uses the Japanese-licence rate. On a foreign licence, Toyota C1 is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each additional 24 hours, before optional cover; the Toyota row above uses the separate Japanese-licence rates of ¥8,580 and ¥7,260. The other companies in the table publish no separate foreign-licence rate here, so get a quote for your own licence.

A foreign licence needs the original licence, a 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit (or an official Japanese translation for licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan) and your passport. See driving in Japan on a foreign licence. Nico Nico accepts an International Driving Permit only at some branches, requires the renter to complete the contract in Japanese without an interpreter or translation app, and asks for an address in Japan and a phone number that can take calls. Sky rents on a Geneva Convention permit with a passport, or on a foreign licence with a Japanese translation and a passport. Guts does not normally rent on an International Driving Permit.

After check-in, wait for the shuttle at your company's spot

Check-in and shuttles depend on the company.

  • Check in at a counter, then take a shuttle: Nippon (about 4 minutes by car; if no staff are there, the direct phone), Toyota (the shuttle goes in check-in order, about 8 minutes) and Orix (go to the rental waiting area after check-in, 3 minutes from there).
  • Call from the counter phone: Budget (after calling, wait about 10 minutes in the rental and parking shuttle waiting room, to the left before the YOKARO bus stop), Times (no staff are stationed there; about 10–15 minutes) and Nissan (about 5 minutes to the branch).
  • Wait outside: for Sky, leave by the door ahead of the arrivals lobby, go about 70 m left to the rental shuttle waiting room and phone the branch (5–10 minutes). For Nico Nico Nagasaki Airport, wait at bus stop 1.
  • Other: Nico Nico Morizono collects you if you phone with your flight and party size after booking. J-Net has you come by taxi at its expense. Guts checks you in at the No. 2 Building, with a shuttle to its rental site.

Several companies' shuttles come to the same waiting room. Check the company name and the branch you booked before boarding.

Return to your booked branch before heading to the terminal

Branches are in different parts of Omura. On your way home, enter the return branch on your booking confirmation into the navigation, and allow separate time for the return and the shuttle to the airport. Times and J-Net ask you to return 1 hour before your flight.

Toyota's page also lists a 24-hour car share in the airport car park, but that is a separate product from its rental cars. You cannot return a rental car to the car share space after closing time.

Choose how to rent by whether you head to Nagasaki City or Sasebo

How long you need a car depends on whether you go towards Sasebo after landing or spend time in Nagasaki City first. If you do not need a car on your city sightseeing days, taking public transport from the airport and collecting a car in the city later is also an option. Compare not only the airport rental charge, but parking and any fee for changing the return branch.

If you go from the airport to Nagasaki City and leave for your next region by train, returning near Nagasaki Station can save the round trip. Check whether one-way is available and its cost by specifying the return branch, model and dates. On itineraries with mountain or narrow roads, it also matters to choose an easy-to-handle size that still takes your luggage.

Nagasaki Airport rental car FAQ

Are one-way returns free at Nagasaki Airport?

It depends on the company and the return branch. Nippon, Toyota and Orix accept returns at other branches, but the fee depends on factors such as the distance to the return branch.

What if no one is at the counter?

At Nippon, use the direct phone there. At Budget, Times and Nissan, use the counter phone to contact the branch. Use the company's own procedure before trying to rebook.

What does one night and two days cost?

On standard rates before discounts and a Japanese licence, a compact with basic CDW for two days comes to ¥18,040–¥20,790 at the seven larger companies, ¥13,420 at Nico Nico and ¥21,450 at J-Net. Guts does not list a daily rate from the second day in its table, and Another prices per car. On a foreign licence, Toyota's base rate is higher; see the price section above.

Can I still rent on a late flight?

Another (until 22:00, depending on bookings), Nico Nico Morizono (until 22:00) and Nico Nico Nagasaki Airport (until 21:00) open late. Among larger companies, Nippon, Toyota, Budget, Orix and Nissan open until 20:00.
