Eight rental branches at Nagasaki Station: how to choose

Nagasaki Station is the terminus of the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen and the JR Nagasaki Line, in the city centre. It has eight rental branches from eight companies. Nippon, Nissan, Nico Nico and Times are about five minutes or less on foot, and J-Net and Carsta about ten. Orix Nagasaki Kozenmachi and Toyota Oura collect you from the station.

This page compares each branch's address, hours, access and one-way rules, with reference prices and when to return before a train or flight.

  • A short walk from the station: Nissan is next to the Prefectural Bus Terminal in front of the station, Nippon is three minutes from the Kamome Exit (east), Nico Nico is three minutes from the West Exit, and Times is about five minutes.
  • Returning in the evening: Nippon, Nissan and Nico Nico close latest, at 20:00. Times closes at 17:00 and J-Net at 18:00.
  • Renting from Toyota: Toyota has no branch near Nagasaki Station. Toyota Oura, eight minutes away by car, collects you from the station if you book.
  • Returning at another branch: Nippon, Toyota Oura, Orix and Nissan take returns at other branches.
  • A lower base rate: on the Japanese-licence standard rates before discounts, Toyota is lowest among the large companies at ¥8,580 for a compact car for 24 hours. Among large companies you can walk to, Times is lowest at ¥8,855. Among smaller companies, Carsta is ¥4,500 and Nico Nico ¥5,610. Carsta does not rent to drivers with less than a year's licence or on an International Driving Permit (IDP).

Reference rates at eight companies

These are compact-car standard rates: regular season, before discounts, on a Japanese driving licence. Tax is included, except that Carsta's rate list does not say whether it is. The 48-hour total is the first 24 hours, one further day and two days of basic collision damage waiver (CDW). Nico Nico's basic CDW leaves the vehicle excess after a single-car accident.

Company and class First 24 hours Each further 24 hours Basic CDW per day 48 hours with basic CDW Minivan (7–8 seats), 24 hours
Carsta Compact (Mazda2, Vitz) ¥4,500 ¥4,500 ¥1,100 ¥11,200 ¥11,500
Nico Nico S (Aqua, Yaris, Roomy) ¥5,610 ¥5,610 ¥1,100 ¥13,420 ¥15,180
Toyota C1 (Yaris, Passo) ¥8,580 ¥7,260 ¥1,100 ¥18,040 ¥20,900
Times C-1 (Mazda2, Note e-POWER) ¥8,855 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥18,975 ¥22,770
Nippon N-B (Fit, Corolla) ¥8,910 ¥7,150 ¥1,100 ¥18,260 ¥22,550
Nissan P2 (March, Note) ¥9,790 ¥7,700 ¥1,650 ¥20,790 ¥24,090
Orix SA (Fit, Note 1.2) ¥9,900 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥20,020 ¥22,660
J-Net J3 (Yaris, Fit, Mazda2) ¥10,450 ¥8,800 ¥1,100 ¥21,450 ¥23,650

With a foreign licence, Toyota has a separate list: C1 is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each further 24 hours, before optional cover. Get a quote for your own licence and dates at the other companies, because these figures are not a visitor quote.

Read the driving licence guide before you book, and the CDW and NOC guide to see what basic cover leaves you paying.

Branches you can walk to, and branches that collect you

Branches at Nagasaki Station fall into three groups: a short walk, about a ten-minute walk, and a pickup from the station.

  • A short walk: Nissan (in front of the station, just north of the Prefectural Bus Terminal and behind the APA Hotel), Nippon (three minutes from the Kamome Exit towards Peace Park), Nico Nico (right from the West Exit and straight on to the ENEOS petrol station, three minutes) and Times (about five minutes, right by Yachiyomachi tram stop).
  • About ten minutes on foot: J-Net Nagasaki Station North (ten minutes; one minute from Stadium City South (Takaramachi) tram stop and ten minutes from JR Urakami Station), Carsta (about ten minutes, at an ENEOS petrol station) and Orix Nagasaki Kozenmachi (820 m, 12 minutes).
  • Collected from the station: for Orix Nagasaki Kozenmachi, call the branch on arrival and wait near general drop-off area W2, on the right from the Inasa Exit (west). Toyota Oura's pickup needs booking. The branch is eight minutes by car along Route 499 towards Nomozaki, in front of Oura-Kaigandori tram stop.

If you arrive by boat at Ohato Terminal in Nagasaki Port, Nippon runs a pickup (call the branch on 095-827-3990). Toyota Oura also delivers and collects cars at city hotels and inns, ¥1,100 each.

Work back from closing time, and allow for the lift to the station

Closing times differ by three hours, from 17:00 to 20:00. Times closes at 17:00, J-Net at 18:00, Toyota Oura, Orix and Carsta at 19:00, and Nippon, Nissan and Nico Nico at 20:00. If you come back in the late afternoon, check your branch's closing time first. Nippon's return MAPCODE is 262 029 111*57.

Orix drives you to Nagasaki Station after your return. On a day with a fixed train, return in good time. Nissan does not handle vehicles 2 m or taller because of its car-park height limit.

Hours change over New Year. Toyota Oura opens 09:00–18:00 from 31 December to 3 January, Nissan 09:00–18:00 from 30 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, and J-Net 09:00–17:00 on 31 December and from 1 to 3 January. Carsta closes at 16:00 on 31 December and all day from 1 to 3 January.

To return at Nagasaki Station a car rented at Nagasaki Airport, name a branch that accepts one-way rentals as the return point. Confirm the price with the pickup branch, return branch, vehicle class and dates in the quote.

Separate days in Nagasaki from days out of the city

Separating sightseeing in central Nagasaki from days at outlying hotels or in several areas narrows the time you need a car. Compare keeping the car on days you use trams or walk with renting only for the days you leave the city, including parking.

On routes with narrow roads and hills, a large car is not always easier. Choose a size that holds your group and luggage, and that fits your hotel's car park. If you return at the airport and fly out, include the shuttle from the airport branch in your plan.
