Osaka has 16 rental branches: choosing by trip

Most people renting in Osaka choose between Kansai Airport with five branches and Shin-Osaka Station with 11. Together they make 16 branches from nine companies.

This guide compares where each company takes bookings, closing times, what it costs to return to the airport, and rates on Japanese and foreign licences.

  • Flying in: all five Kansai Airport companies take you through check-in at Aeroplaza, next to Kansai Airport Station, and hand over the car there. There is no shuttle. Nippon closes at 21:00 and the other four at 20:00.
  • Arriving by Shinkansen: Shin-Osaka's 11 branches are spread around the exits, and Toyota alone has four. Toyota Shin-Osaka Shinkansen Exit is straight ahead from the North Exit. Toyota Shin-Osaka Station Main Exit and Nissan are by subway exit 7. Budget and Sky are on the east side. Eki Rent-a-Car is at the foot of the South Exit stairs.
  • Late at night or early morning: Nissan Shin-Osaka Shinkansen Ekimae shows 24-hour opening on its branch page. Sky Shin-Osaka Station East Exit opens 07:00–22:00.
  • Renting at the airport and returning at Shin-Osaka: Nippon, Toyota and Orix have branches at both and accept one-way returns.
  • Keeping the cost down: on standard compact rates before discounts for a Japanese licence, Nico Nico at Shin-Osaka is lowest at ¥5,610 for 24 hours. Among the major companies, Eki Rent-a-Car at Shin-Osaka is ¥8,470 and Toyota ¥8,580; Toyota is lowest at Kansai Airport. Driving back to Kansai Airport also costs the Sky Gate Bridge toll.

The tables below list hours and one-way availability for all 16 branches, with links to their branch pages. Foreign-licence prices and eligibility are in the rates section.

Kansai Airport and Shin-Osaka Station compared

The two places differ in where you check in and in what the return costs.

  • Kansai Airport: the counters of all five companies are in Aeroplaza. From Terminal 1 it is about 3 minutes on foot along the second-floor walkway; from Terminal 2 it is 7–9 minutes by free shuttle bus. Nippon and Times check in on the second floor; Toyota, Orix and Nissan on the first floor. Driving back onto the airport island costs the Sky Gate Bridge toll.
  • Shin-Osaka Station: branches within walking distance are scattered around the exits. Nico Nico is about 4 minutes from the North Exit. Nippon, Orix, Toyota Shin-Osaka Ekimae and Toyota Shin-Osaka are 7–9 minutes away. Nippon also has a reception counter on the first floor of the Shin-Osaka Hankyu Building, directly connected to the North Exit, with a shuttle to its branch.

Kansai Airport branches open at 08:00 and the latest closes at 21:00. Shin-Osaka has the Nissan branch that shows 24-hour opening, and Sky opens until 22:00.

Toyota Kansai Airport is on the first floor of Aeroplaza next to Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport, 3 minutes on foot from the second floor of Terminal 1 and right beside the shuttle-bus stop from Terminal 2. There is no shuttle to the branch. Shin-Osaka has four branches; the closest to the station are Shinkansen Exit, straight ahead from the North Exit, and Station Main Exit, right by subway exit 7. Shin-Osaka Ekimae handles vehicles 2 m or taller, trucks and buses.

All five open 08:00–20:00, and Shin-Osaka Ekimae and Shin-Osaka close from 1 to 3 January. Returns to branches in and outside the prefecture are accepted, but some cars are excluded by branch, and Kansai Airport does not allow one-way rentals of vehicles on number 1 or 2 plates. When returning to Kansai Airport, pay the ¥940 Sky Gate Bridge toll at the toll gate.

The C1 compact standard rate is ¥8,580 for 24 hours on a Japanese licence. CDW alone leaves the NOC (¥20,000 or ¥50,000). The Anshin W Plan waives the NOC and also covers repair or replacement of a punctured tyre.

At Kansai Airport, the counter is to the left of the main entrance on the second floor of Aeroplaza, and you leave from a nearby car park after check-in. To return, park in the dedicated rental return area, then finish the paperwork at the second-floor counter. Shin-Osaka Station Shinkansen Exit is a 7-minute walk west of the North Exit, and a shuttle also runs from the reception counter (08:00–17:00) on the first floor of the Shin-Osaka Hankyu Building, directly connected to the North Exit.

Both open daily 08:00–21:00. The Shinkansen Exit branch closes at 20:00 from 31 December 2026 to 2 January 2027. For cars rented elsewhere, the Shinkansen Exit accepts all classes and Kansai Airport accepts kei cars, passenger cars, wagons, vans and light trucks. If a typhoon or other event closes the Sky Gate Bridge, Kansai Airport may close or shorten its hours.

The N-B compact standard rate is ¥8,910 for 24 hours. CDW does not remove the NOC; ECO is the separate scheme that waives it.

The SA compact standard rate is ¥9,900 for 24 hours. The Rental Anshin Pack (RAP) waives the NOC and covers puncture tyre costs up to ¥20,000. If you call at least an hour before your return time, an extension of up to one hour costs nothing extra.

Nico Nico has no branch at Kansai Airport.

The S class standard rate is ¥5,610 for 24 hours and ¥5,610 for each further day. Basic CDW (¥1,100 a day) leaves the vehicle excess after a single-car accident; Perfect cover removes it. One-way rentals are generally not accepted.

To rent on a foreign licence, bring an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention and your passport, or, for licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco or Taiwan, the licence with a Japanese translation and your passport.

Nico Nico requires the renter to complete the contract in Japanese, without an interpreter or translation app, and some branches do not accept an IDP.

The Sky Gate Bridge toll for returning at Kansai Airport is not included.

The cover names and prices that remove the NOC are compared in CDW and NOC.

Pickup and return in Osaka

Returning at Kansai Airport

Nippon closes at 21:00 and the other four at 20:00. Return Times cars at least 1 hour 30 minutes before the flight. At Nippon, park in the dedicated return area and then complete the paperwork at the second-floor counter; parking the car does not finish the return. Kansai Airport and Osaka International Airport (Itami) are different airports, so match the airport on your ticket to the return branch before you confirm the booking.

When a typhoon closes the bridge

If the Sky Gate Bridge closes or trains stop, Nippon may close or shorten its hours and Toyota may close. Contacts in that case are Nippon's Izumisano branch (050-1712-2518) and, for Toyota, the head-office reservation centre (0120-624-600) or Rinku Town Ekimae (072-463-0100). From 31 October 2026 Toyota Rinku Town Ekimae operates from a temporary site and does not accept cars rented at other branches.

Renting and returning at Shin-Osaka

At Budget Shin-Osaka East Exit, pickup and return are at different premises. Return to Shin-Osaka East Exit (return-only branch), filling the tank within 5 km beforehand and showing the receipt. Large vehicles are limited to certain branches, and Toyota handles vehicles 2 m or taller, trucks and buses at Shin-Osaka Ekimae. At Kansai Airport, Times cannot rent or take back tall or long vehicles, and Nissan cannot rent or take back T-class or M1-class vehicles.

Renting at the airport and returning at Shin-Osaka

Name separate pickup and return branches when you book, and check that the return branch accepts the class you are renting. One-way fees depend on the company. Nippon and Orix charge nothing when the branches are less than 20 km apart. The Japan rental-company comparison explains the differences between companies.

Staying in the city before heading out

If you spend your first day in central Osaka and only then head out of the city, renting at Shin-Osaka the next morning is an option. Add overnight parking for the unused car, the bridge toll and rail fares when you compare.

Frequently asked questions

Should I rent at Kansai Airport or Shin-Osaka Station?

Kansai Airport suits you if you land and head straight towards Wakayama or similar areas. Shin-Osaka suits a Shinkansen arrival or the day after a night in the city. At Kansai Airport you check in at Aeroplaza and leave from there; at Shin-Osaka, the closest branch depends on the exit.

Which company has the lowest rate?

On standard compact rates before discounts for a Japanese licence, Nico Nico at Shin-Osaka is lowest at ¥5,610 for 24 hours. Among the major companies, Eki Rent-a-Car at Shin-Osaka is ¥8,470 and Toyota ¥8,580. Member and online discounts change the price in the booking, so compare the same dates, class and cover.

Can I rent at Kansai Airport and return at Shin-Osaka?

Nippon, Toyota and Orix have branches at both and accept one-way returns. Toyota Kansai Airport does not allow one-way rentals of vehicles on number 1 or 2 plates. A one-way option is not always free, so name the return branch in the booking and check the amount.

Can I rent at any time of day?

Nissan Shin-Osaka Shinkansen Ekimae shows 24-hour opening on its branch page. An unstaffed rental-only branch shares its address, so check how check-in works before booking a late-night pickup. At Kansai Airport, the latest closing is Nippon at 21:00.

Do I take a shuttle to Kansai Airport's rental branches?

No. All five companies check you in at Aeroplaza and hand over the car there. It is about 3 minutes on foot from Terminal 1, and a free shuttle bus runs from Terminal 2.
