Question
One-night rental car costs in Japan
When to use this guide
Before choosing dates and a return time
Scope
Compact-car 24, 36 and 48-hour charges at nine companies, overtime calculations, high season and early termination
Cost basis
Listed prices from each company's price list (including tax, before discounts, rechecked on 1 November 2026)

For a one-night, two-day rental in Japan, the 48-hour basic charge for a compact car is ¥11,220–¥17,820. That covers the seven companies with a 48-hour figure in the table, at listed prices before discounts, as of 1 November 2026. Toyota, Nippon, Times, Orix, Nissan and JR Eki are ¥15,620–¥17,820, and Nico Nico Rent a Car is ¥11,220.

If you return only a little past 24 hours on the second day, you pay less than the 48-hour charge. However, Toyota and Nissan reach the 48-hour charge at six hours over, and Times at eight hours over. These are domestic listed prices; overseas services and packages set their own.

24, 36 and 48-hour charges at nine companies

Company Class (typical models) 24 hours 36 hours 48 hours 48 hours + CDW

Nippon Rent-A-Car Standard (Fit, Corolla and others) ¥8,910 ¥16,060 ¥18,260
Times Car Rental C-1 (Note e-POWER, Roomy and others) ¥8,855 ¥16,775 ¥16,775 ¥18,975
Orix Rent a Car SA (Fit, Note 1.2 and others) ¥9,900 ¥17,820 ¥20,020
Nissan Rent a Car P2 (March, Note and others) ¥9,790 ¥17,490 ¥17,490 ¥20,790

Sky Rent a Car S (Yaris, Fit and others) ¥8,800

Guts Rent a Car C-1 (Vitz, March, Fit and others) ¥4,070
  • Amounts include tax and are listed prices before member and Web discounts. They are normal-season prices at branches outside Tokyo's 23 wards. High-season and Tokyo prices are under "When charges rise" below.
  • The 48-hour figure is the "up to 24 hours" charge plus one "each further day" charge.
  • For companies with a blank 36-hour charge, enter the return date and time on the booking screen to see the amount.
  • "48 hours + CDW" adds two days of the collision damage waiver. Per day, it is ¥1,650 at Nissan (Standard Plan), ¥1,100 at Sky's Honshu and Shikoku branches, and ¥1,100 at the other seven companies.
  • Guts is ¥4,070 for 24 hours and ¥19,250 for one week. Its charge does not include vehicle cover, and mileage is limited to 300km per 24 hours.

How to choose a return time

1. Count the hours from your departure time

The charge depends on the time from pickup to return, not the number of nights. From 10:00 on Saturday, returning at 10:00 on Sunday is 24 hours, 16:00 on Sunday is 30 hours, and 22:00 on Sunday is 36 hours.

2. Check how each company calculates time over 24 hours

Company Calculation beyond 24 hours Hours over at which the 48-hour charge applies
Toyota Rent a Car The lower of the total at ¥1,320 per hour over and ¥7,260 per further day Six hours or more
Times Car Rental The lower of the total at ¥1,056 per extra hour and ¥7,920 per extra day Eight hours or more
Nissan Rent a Car The lower of the total at ¥1,430 per hour over and ¥7,700 per further day Six hours or more
Nico Nico Rent a Car A combination of up to 12 hours (¥3,740) and up to 24 hours (¥5,610) Over 12 hours
Nippon Rent-A-Car Price list: ¥1,210 per hour over, ¥7,150 per further day
Orix Rent a Car Price list: ¥1,320 per extra hour, ¥7,920 per extra day
JR Eki Rent-A-Car Price list: ¥1,320 per hour over, ¥7,150 per further day
Sky Rent a Car Price list: ¥1,320 per extra hour, ¥7,480 per further day

Renting from Toyota from 10:00 on Saturday to 15:00 on Sunday (29 hours) costs ¥8,580 + ¥6,600 for five hours over = ¥15,180.

If you return at 16:00 on Sunday (30 hours), six hours over would be ¥7,920. The further-day charge of ¥7,260 is lower, so it becomes ¥15,840, the same as 48 hours.

3. If the charge equals 48 hours, use the whole time

In the example of pickup at 10:00 on Saturday, the basic charge equals 48 hours from 16:00 on Sunday at Toyota and Nissan, and from 18:00 on Sunday at Times. A 48-hour booking to 10:00 on Monday costs the same basic charge. Check the return branch's business hours before setting the date and time.

At Nico Nico, up to 36 hours (24 hours + 12 hours) is ¥9,350. A booking from 10:00 on Saturday with return by 22:00 on Sunday is ¥1,870 cheaper than 48 hours.

When charges rise

  • High season: at Orix and Nico Nico, the departure date decides whether high-season rates apply. At Nico Nico, if the departure date falls in the period, the whole rental is at high-season rates even if you return after it ends. Orix's SA goes from ¥9,900 to ¥11,880 for 24 hours. Upcoming periods are 25 December to 2 January 2027 and Golden Week 2027 (28 April to 4 May). Times' high season is the New Year (28 December to 3 January), Golden Week (28 April to 5 May) and Obon (10–16 August).
  • Tokyo rates: Toyota's branches in Tokyo's 23 wards, its Oshima branch and its Narita Airport branch charge Tokyo rates. C1 is ¥10,010 for 24 hours and ¥8,800 for each further 24 hours. That makes 48 hours ¥18,810, ¥2,970 more than at branches outside the 23 wards.
  • Specifying a model: specifying a model costs ¥2,200 per rental at Toyota and ¥1,100 per 24 hours at Times. Booking by class alone avoids this charge.

Exceptions and cautions

  • Returning early does not refund everything: at Times and Nico Nico, 50% of the difference between the booked charge and the charge for the time actually used is an early-termination fee. Nippon gives no refund if the difference between planned and actual return is under 24 hours. Booking two days from the start costs less than booking three days and returning after two.
  • Going past your booked time counts as overtime: at Nico Nico, extending your booked time incurs an extension charge even within the 12-hour and 24-hour bands. Contact the departure branch before the return time passes.
  • Guts' distance limit: beyond 300km per 24 hours or 1,500km per week, it costs ¥11 per km.

Checks before booking

  • How many hours your departure and return times make
  • Whether time beyond 24 hours has passed the point where the charge equals 48 hours
  • Whether your departure date is in high season, and whether the branch uses Tokyo rates
  • How many days of CDW to add, and whether a member or Web discount is available

How much is it to go a little past 24 hours?
