Beppu Station has six rental branches: how to choose

Beppu Station, in the hot spring city of Beppu in Oita Prefecture, has six rental branches from six companies. Four are within walking distance of the west exit (Toyota, Times, Nico Nico and Guts). Two are near Beppu Kanko Port and come to the station to collect you (Nippon and Nissan).

This page compares the walking routes and pick-ups, closing times, returns and one-way rentals, and the reference price at each company.

  • Renting right by the station: Toyota Beppu Ekimae is 1 minute on foot from the west exit, Times and Nico Nico 2 minutes, and Guts 3 minutes.
  • Returning late in the day: Toyota closes latest, at 20:00. Guts closes at 19:00, and Nippon opens until 19:00 at weekends only. Times closes at 17:00. Nico Nico offers an unstaffed after-hours return, with conditions.
  • Arriving by ferry (Sunflower): Nippon Beppu Kanko Port-mae is 13 minutes on foot from the terminal, and Nissan Beppu Kanko Port-mae is 5 minutes on foot from the port.
  • Returning somewhere else: Toyota handles returns at other branches. Cars rented from Nico Nico Beppu Ekimae can be returned at its Oita Airport Aki branch. Times and Nippon accept cars rented elsewhere.
  • Keeping the cost down: on standard rates before discounts on a Japanese licence, Toyota is the cheapest larger company at ¥8,580 for a compact for 24 hours. Nico Nico is ¥5,610 and Guts ¥4,070. Guts includes no vehicle damage cover and limits distance to 300 km per 24 hours.

Reference prices: standard rates at six companies

This table takes each company's standard rate for a compact car, with the total including basic collision damage waiver (CDW). The total changes with the number of days and the cover you choose. These are regular-season rates before discounts on a Japanese licence, unless a row says otherwise.

Company and class First 24 hours Additional day Basic CDW per day 48 hours with basic CDW Minivan (7–8 seats), 24 hours
Guts C-1 (Vitz, March, Fit). No vehicle damage cover; 300 km per 24 hours included ¥4,070 — ¥1,100 — ¥8,580
Nico Nico S (Aqua, Yaris, Roomy). Basic CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident ¥5,610 ¥5,610 ¥1,100 ¥13,420 ¥15,180
Toyota C1 (Yaris, Passo) ¥8,580 ¥7,260 ¥1,100 ¥18,040 ¥20,900
Times C-1 (Mazda2, Note e-POWER) ¥8,855 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥18,975 ¥22,770
Nippon N-B (Fit, Corolla) ¥8,910 ¥7,150 ¥1,100 ¥18,260 ¥22,550
Nissan P2 (March, Note) ¥9,790 ¥7,700 ¥1,650 ¥20,790 ¥24,090
  • The 48-hour total is the first 24 hours, one additional day and two days of basic CDW. A dash means the company's rate table does not list that fee. Where basic CDW shows "Included", the rate already contains it. Extra hours, fuel, one-way fees and options such as child seats are not included.
  • Most companies offer member or online discounts, so the booking screen is often cheaper than this table. Peak periods such as Golden Week, Obon and New Year cost more. Enter your dates and class for the actual price.
  • Guts's base rate does not include vehicle damage cover, so you pay up to ¥50,000 or ¥100,000 after an accident (waived if you take basic CDW). The NOC is ¥30,000 even if the car can be driven.
  • Guts includes 300 km per 24 hours, and each extra kilometre costs ¥11. Its table does not list a daily rate from the second day.
  • Nico Nico's basic CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident.
  • Toyota has member discounts of 10% and 20%.
  • Times has member rates of up to 20% off.
  • Nippon has a separate member rate table.
  • Nissan's basic CDW is calculated on the Standard Plan at ¥1,650 a day.

Prices differ by licence. The table uses the Japanese-licence rate. On a foreign licence, Toyota C1 is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each additional 24 hours, before optional cover; the Toyota row above uses the separate Japanese-licence rates of ¥8,580 and ¥7,260. The other companies in the table publish no separate foreign-licence rate here, so get a quote for your own licence.

A foreign licence needs the original licence, a 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit (or an official Japanese translation for licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan) and your passport. See driving in Japan on a foreign licence. Nico Nico accepts an International Driving Permit only at some branches, requires the renter to complete the contract in Japanese without an interpreter or translation app, and asks for an address in Japan and a phone number that can take calls. Guts does not normally rent on an International Driving Permit.

Walk from the west exit to station branches, and ask port branches for a pick-up

The four walkable branches are all on the west exit (Yamate) side of Beppu Station. Toyota is beside Business Hotel Star.

For Nico Nico, leave the west exit, turn right and go about 250 m north along the tracks into the JR Kita Kokashita shopping arcade.

Toyota has two branches, Beppu and Beppu Ekimae, so open your map using the full branch name and address.

To return to Nico Nico outside hours, choose the eligible return slot when you book. Payment is by credit card in advance only. Slots are limited, and times spanning a closing day are not available. You pay up to the next opening even if you return early.

The two port branches collect you from the station. Nippon's station pick-up takes up to four people, and you must contact the branch by the day before. Nissan collects you if you phone after you arrive at Beppu Station (09:30–16:30).

Be back at the branch 30 minutes before closing for a station drop-off

Nippon's drop-off at the station or port ends 30 minutes before closing. Plan to be back at the branch in time, including return paperwork.

Times opens 09:00–17:00. Because of height and garage limits, tall and long cars rented elsewhere cannot be returned there.

The 24-hour pickup and return shown on the branch page is for car share. It does not mean you can return a rental car after closing.
