Choosing a rental car in Oita

Oita Prefecture is in north-eastern Kyushu, known for the hot-spring towns of Beppu and Yufuin. There are two places to compare rental branches: Oita Airport with seven branches from six companies, and Beppu Station with six from six. Neither has a 24-hour branch.

This guide shows which place suits your trip, how airport counters and station pickups work, which branches take cars rented elsewhere, and how rates differ on Japanese and foreign licences.

  • Arriving by air: Nippon, Toyota, Orix and Nissan check you in at counters in the arrivals lobby, then take you by shuttle. Times is about 1 minute on foot from the front of the airport. For the two Nico Nico branches, call after landing for a pickup.
  • Arriving at Beppu Station by train: four branches are a walk from the West Exit (Yamate side): Toyota (1 minute), Times and Nico Nico (2 minutes), and Guts (3 minutes). Nippon and Nissan, near Beppu Sightseeing Port, collect you from the station.
  • Arriving at Beppu Sightseeing Port by ferry: Nippon Beppu Kanko-ko Mae is 13 minutes on foot from the Sunflower ferry terminal, and Nissan Beppu Kanko-ko Mae is 5 minutes from the port.
  • Staying in Beppu or Yufuin before heading out: you can go to your hotel with no car and rent at a Beppu Station branch on the day you set out. Compare the rental charge and hotel parking for unused days against renting at the airport from day one.
  • Renting at the airport and returning in Beppu: Toyota and Nippon accept cars rented elsewhere at both places.
  • Renting early or returning late: Nico Nico Oita Airport Akimachi opens 07:00–22:00, and Oita Airport Musashimachi Itohara 07:00–20:00. At Beppu Station, Toyota closes latest, at 20:00.
  • Keeping the cost down: on standard compact rates before discounts for a Japanese licence, Toyota is lowest among the major companies at ¥8,580 for 24 hours. Among smaller companies, Guts (Beppu Station) is ¥4,070 and Nico Nico ¥5,610. Guts includes no vehicle damage cover and limits you to 300 km per 24 hours.

Oita Airport and Beppu Station compared

At Oita Airport, Nippon, Toyota, Orix and Nissan have counters in the arrivals lobby. You check in, then take a shuttle to the branch. Times is a walk from the front of the airport, and its counter has no staff. On the way back, return the car to the branch you booked and take the shuttle to the terminal.

At Beppu Station, four branches are a walk from the West Exit (Toyota, Times, Nico Nico, Guts), and two near Beppu Sightseeing Port collect you from the station (Nippon, Nissan). They close between 17:00 and 20:00, and many close earlier than airport branches.

The first table compares the two places. The tables after it list every branch, with each name linking to its branch page. For Oita Station or Oita City, use the branch search on each company's website.

Toyota Oita Airport checks you in at the counter in the arrivals lobby, then takes you to the branch by shuttle. You cannot collect or return a car inside the airport. Beppu Ekimae is 1 minute from Beppu Station's West Exit (Yamate side), beside Business Hotel Star. Toyota has both a "Beppu" and a "Beppu Ekimae" branch in the city, so open your map using the full branch name.

Both open 08:00–20:00 with no closing days, and accept one-way rentals to branches inside and outside the prefecture (Beppu Ekimae excludes No. 1, 2 and 8 registration classes). One-way rentals between branches in the same prefecture and area are free. The Anshin W Plan waives the non-operation charge (NOC) and also covers tyre repair or replacement after a puncture. The standard compact rate (C1) is ¥8,580 for 24 hours on a Japanese licence.

Nippon Oita Airport checks you in at the rental counter to the front right as you leave the arrivals gate (in front of the ANA counter), then takes you 5 minutes by car to the branch at the front of the airport. The way back to the airport is also 5 minutes by car. It opens daily 08:00–20:00, and its return MAPCODE is 265 207 659*20.

Beppu Kanko-ko Mae is 10 minutes by car from Beppu Station. The station pickup takes up to four people, and you must contact the branch by the day before. Lifts to the station or port run until 30 minutes before closing. It opens 07:30–18:00 from Monday to Friday and 08:00–19:00 at weekends (holidays follow the day of the week).

Both accept cars of all classes from other branches. One-way rentals are free when the branches are less than 20 km apart. Collision damage waiver (CDW) does not remove the NOC; to waive it, add ECO. The standard compact rate (N-B) is ¥8,910 for 24 hours.

Orix Oita Airport checks you in at the rental counter in the airport (Oita Airport Counter), then takes you to the branch by free shuttle. The counter handles check-in only, and you collect the car at the branch, 1 minute on foot from the airport. It opens daily 09:00–19:00.

One-way rentals are accepted, except Hokkaido, Okinawa and outlying islands, and are free when branches are less than 20 km apart. Orix is not among the Beppu Station branches in the tables, so to return in Beppu, check for a branch that can take the car when you book. The Rent-a-Car Anshin Pack (RAP) waives the NOC and covers puncture repair and tyre costs up to ¥20,000. The standard compact rate (SA) is ¥9,900 for 24 hours.

Times Oita Airport is about 1 minute on foot from the front of the airport and gives priority to customers who walk in. The airport counter has no staff, and for a shuttle you ask the branch after landing (about 10 minutes; it may be unavailable when busy). If you use the shuttle after a return, the deadline is 60 minutes before your flight. It opens 09:00–19:00.

Beppu Ekimae is about 2 minutes from the West Exit and opens 09:00–17:00. The 24-hour departure and return on its page is for car sharing, and rental cars cannot be returned after closing. Height and garage limits mean it does not handle tall or long vehicles.

Times does not rent ETC cards (for electronic toll payment), so bring your own if you plan to use expressways. The Anshin Hosho course is the cover that waives the NOC. The standard compact rate (C-1) is ¥8,855 for 24 hours.

Oita Airport Akimachi opens daily 07:00–22:00, and you need to book in advance for the early morning and last time slots. After collecting your bags, call the branch and wait at the smoking area and drop-off point, to the right with your back to the airport; staff drive you 2 minutes to the branch. Oita Airport Musashimachi Itohara opens daily 07:00–20:00, and a car comes if you call after landing.

Beppu Ekimae is about 2 minutes from the ticket gate. Turn right out of the West Exit and go about 250 m north along the tracks, into the JR Kita Kokashita shopping arcade. It opens 08:00–18:00 and closes on Wednesdays.

None of the three branch pages mentions one-way rentals, and the company generally does not accept them. The S class (Aqua, Yaris, Roomy and others) is ¥5,610 for 24 hours and ¥5,610 for each further day. Basic CDW (¥1,100 a day) leaves the vehicle excess after a single-car accident; Perfect cover removes it.

Reference rates and cover

The table shows standard compact rates for companies with branches at Oita Airport and Beppu Station: regular season, before discounts, for a Japanese licence. A dash means the company does not publish that rate.

Company and class First 24 hours Each further 24 hours Basic CDW per day 48 hours with basic CDW Minivan (7–8 seats), 24 hours Note
Guts C-1 (Vitz, March, Fit) ¥4,070 — ¥1,100 — ¥8,580 No vehicle damage cover in the rate; 300 km per 24 hours
Nico Nico S (Aqua, Yaris, Roomy) ¥5,610 ¥5,610 ¥1,100 ¥13,420 ¥15,180 Basic CDW leaves the vehicle excess after a single-car accident
Toyota C1 (Yaris, Passo) ¥8,580 ¥7,260 ¥1,100 ¥18,040 ¥20,900 —
Times C-1 (Mazda2, Note e-POWER) ¥8,855 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥18,975 ¥22,770 —
Nippon N-B (Fit, Corolla) ¥8,910 ¥7,150 ¥1,100 ¥18,260 ¥22,550 —

Orix SA (Fit, Note 1.2) ¥9,900 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥20,020 ¥22,660 —

On a foreign licence, Toyota uses a separate rate list: C1 is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each further 24 hours, against ¥8,580 and ¥7,260 in the table. To rent on a foreign licence, bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention and your passport, or, for licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco or Taiwan, the licence with a Japanese translation and your passport.

Nico Nico requires the renter to complete the contract in Japanese, without an interpreter or translation app, and Guts generally does not rent on an IDP.

The cover names and prices that remove the NOC are compared in CDW and NOC.

Pickup and return in Oita

Returning at the airport for your flight

Return the car to the branch you booked, then take the shuttle to the terminal. Set your navigation to the branch, not the airport. Airport branches close at 19:00 (Orix, Nissan and Times), 20:00 (Nippon, Toyota and Nico Nico Musashimachi Itohara) or 22:00 (Nico Nico Akimachi). If your flight is delayed past Nissan's opening hours, it deals with it on the next business day.

Returning at Beppu Station

Beppu Station branches close at 17:00 (Times), 18:00 (Nico Nico and Nissan), 19:00 (Guts) or 20:00 (Toyota). Nippon Beppu Kanko-ko Mae closes at 18:00 on weekdays and 19:00 at weekends, and lifts to the station or port run until 30 minutes before closing, so get back in time for your lift. Nico Nico Beppu Ekimae closes on Wednesdays.

One-way rentals between the airport and Beppu

To rent at the airport and return in Beppu, the candidates are Toyota and Nippon, whose branches at both ends accept cars rented elsewhere. Nippon's Beppu branch is by the port, so ask for a lift to the station. One-way fees depend on the company, distance and area, and are not always free. Name the return branch when you book and check the amount.

Winter days heading for Yufuin and the mountains

If you drive to Yufuin or on mountain roads in winter, check when you book whether the car has studless tyres. At branches where they are not standard, the option costs ¥2,200 (per 24 hours or day) at Toyota (passenger cars), Times and Nissan, and some branches do not offer it.

Frequently asked questions

Should I rent at Oita Airport or Beppu Station?

Oita Airport suits you if you land and tour straight away. Beppu Station suits a train arrival in Beppu or a trip that starts after a night in Beppu or Yufuin. Most airport branches check you in at a counter and then use a shuttle. At Beppu Station, four branches are a walk from the West Exit, and two collect you from the station.

Which company has the lowest rate?

On standard compact rates before discounts for a Japanese licence, Guts at Beppu Station is lowest at ¥4,070. It includes no vehicle damage cover and has a mileage limit. Nico Nico is ¥5,610 at both the airport and Beppu, and Toyota is ¥8,580 among the major companies. Member and online discounts change the price, so narrow your choice to two or three companies and compare them in the booking.

Can I rent at Oita Airport and return in Beppu?

Toyota and Nippon accept cars rented elsewhere at both places. With Toyota, return to Beppu Ekimae (excluding No. 1, 2 and 8 registration classes), and with Nippon, to Beppu Kanko-ko Mae. Check the fee by naming the return branch when you book.

Can I rent late at night or early in the morning?

There is no 24-hour branch. Nico Nico Oita Airport Akimachi opens 07:00–22:00 and needs an advance booking for the early morning and last time slots. Other airport branches close at 19:00 or 20:00, and Beppu Station branches between 17:00 and 20:00.

Which branches can I walk to from Beppu Station?

Four on the West Exit side: Toyota (1 minute), Times and Nico Nico (2 minutes), and Guts (3 minutes). Nippon and Nissan are near Beppu Sightseeing Port and collect you from the station.
