Oita Airport has seven rental branches: how to choose

Oita Airport, on the Kunisaki Peninsula in Kunisaki, Oita Prefecture, has seven rental branches from six companies. Nippon, Toyota, Orix and Nissan check you in at a counter in the arrivals lobby, then a shuttle takes you to the branch. Times is about 1 minute on foot from the front of the airport. For the two Nico Nico branches, you phone after you land and ask to be collected.

This page compares the counters and pick-ups, closing times, returns and one-way rentals, and the reference price at each company.

  • Renting early or returning late: Nico Nico Oita Airport Aki-machi opens 07:00–22:00, and Nico Nico Oita Airport Musashi-machi Itohara 07:00–20:00. Among larger companies, Nippon and Toyota open until 20:00, and Orix, Nissan and Times close at 19:00.
  • Walking: Times is about 1 minute on foot from the front of the airport. Orix's branch is also 1 minute on foot, but you check in at the terminal counter and take the shuttle.
  • Returning somewhere else: Nippon, Toyota, Orix and Nissan allow returns at other branches.
  • Keeping the cost down: on standard rates before discounts on a Japanese licence, Toyota is the cheapest larger company at ¥8,580 for a compact for 24 hours. Nico Nico is ¥5,610, but its basic CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident.

Reference prices: standard rates at six companies

This table takes each company's standard rate for a compact car, with the total including basic collision damage waiver (CDW). The total changes with the number of days and the cover you choose. These are regular-season rates before discounts on a Japanese licence, unless a row says otherwise.

Company and class First 24 hours Additional day Basic CDW per day 48 hours with basic CDW Minivan (7–8 seats), 24 hours
Nico Nico S (Aqua, Yaris, Roomy). Basic CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident ¥5,610 ¥5,610 ¥1,100 ¥13,420 ¥15,180
Toyota C1 (Yaris, Passo) ¥8,580 ¥7,260 ¥1,100 ¥18,040 ¥20,900
Times C-1 (Mazda2, Note e-POWER) ¥8,855 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥18,975 ¥22,770
Nippon N-B (Fit, Corolla) ¥8,910 ¥7,150 ¥1,100 ¥18,260 ¥22,550
Nissan P2 (March, Note) ¥9,790 ¥7,700 ¥1,650 ¥20,790 ¥24,090
Orix SA (Fit, Note 1.2) ¥9,900 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥20,020 ¥22,660
  • The 48-hour total is the first 24 hours, one additional day and two days of basic CDW. A dash means the company's rate table does not list that fee. Where basic CDW shows "Included", the rate already contains it. Extra hours, fuel, one-way fees and options such as child seats are not included.
  • Most companies offer member or online discounts, so the booking screen is often cheaper than this table. Peak periods such as Golden Week, Obon and New Year cost more. Enter your dates and class for the actual price.
  • Nico Nico's basic CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident.
  • Toyota has member discounts of 10% and 20%.
  • Times has member rates of up to 20% off.
  • Nippon has a separate member rate table.
  • Nissan's basic CDW is calculated on the Standard Plan at ¥1,650 a day.
  • Orix has member discounts and a 5% web discount.

Prices differ by licence. The table uses the Japanese-licence rate. On a foreign licence, Toyota C1 is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each additional 24 hours, before optional cover; the Toyota row above uses the separate Japanese-licence rates of ¥8,580 and ¥7,260. The other companies in the table publish no separate foreign-licence rate here, so get a quote for your own licence.

A foreign licence needs the original licence, a 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit (or an official Japanese translation for licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan) and your passport. See driving in Japan on a foreign licence. Nico Nico accepts an International Driving Permit only at some branches, requires the renter to complete the contract in Japanese without an interpreter or translation app, and asks for an address in Japan and a phone number that can take calls.

From arrival to check-in: counter or phone

Check-in and shuttles depend on the company.

  • Check in at a counter, then take a shuttle: Nippon (the rental counter ahead on the right of the arrival exit, in front of the ANA counter; its branch, facing the airport, is 5 minutes by car), Toyota (the reception counter in the arrivals lobby), Orix (the rental counter in the terminal) and Nissan (the terminal counter; 3 minutes by car to the branch).
  • Walk: Times is about 1 minute on foot from the front of the airport. No staff are at its airport counter. For the shuttle, ask the branch (0120-352-657) after you land. It takes about 10 minutes and may not be possible when busy.
  • Phone after you land: at Nico Nico Oita Airport Aki-machi, phone the branch after collecting your luggage and wait at the smoking area and drop-off point, to the right with your back to the airport (2 minutes by car). Nico Nico Oita Airport Musashi-machi Itohara also collects you if you phone directly. On foot, Aki-machi is about 17 minutes and Musashi-machi Itohara about 15 minutes.

Toyota and Orix only check you in at the terminal counter, and you collect the car at the branch. Shuttle times are a guide to the ride only, not the time to set off including check-in and inspecting the car. Decide on people, luggage and child seats when you book, and on the day you only need to confirm them.

Return to the branch, then take the shuttle to the terminal

On your way home, return the car to the branch you booked and take the shuttle to the terminal. Set your navigation to the branch, not the airport. Toyota does not take returns inside the airport. Nippon has a 5-minute shuttle to the airport after return, and its return mapcode is 265 207 659*20. Times asks for 60 minutes before your flight if you use the shuttle.

Closing times range from 19:00 to 22:00. Orix, Nissan and Times close at 19:00, Nippon, Toyota and Nico Nico Musashi-machi Itohara at 20:00, and Nico Nico Aki-machi at 22:00. At Nissan, if a flight delay takes you past opening hours, it is dealt with on the next business day.

If you stay in Beppu and continue by train, you can consider a one-way rental returning to a branch around Beppu Station. However, even if the airport branch offers one-way rentals, the station branch you want may not accept the same class. Compare returning to the airport with returning at the station, using quotes that include the return branch and extra charges.

Set your rental period by the days you tour the hot springs

On a trip around several hotels in Beppu, Yufuin and elsewhere, the convenience of keeping your luggage in the car is one reason to rent at the airport. If you will stay at one hotel and nearby, first consider whether you need a car for the whole trip. Include hotel parking charges and conditions in your total.

On winter trips that include mountain areas, check equipment such as winter tyres, chains and four-wheel drive for the car you book. Do not judge driving conditions by lowland weather across the prefecture alone. Check road information for the sections you will actually drive, and allow a schedule that gets you back comfortably.
