Choosing a rental car in Kagawa

Kagawa Prefecture is in north-eastern Shikoku, on the Seto Inland Sea, with Takamatsu as its capital. There are two main places to rent: Takamatsu Airport with nine branches and Takamatsu Station with ten, 19 branches from 12 companies in all.

This guide shows which place suits your trip, how pickup and returns work at each, which branches take cars rented elsewhere, and how rates differ on Japanese and foreign licences.

  • Arriving by air: all Takamatsu Airport branches are outside the airport. Seven companies, all except Heisei and One's, check you in at the arrivals lobby or a first-floor counter, then take you by shuttle. Nippon, Toyota, Nissan, Budget and One's close latest, at 20:00. Times does not serve flights landing at 19:00 or later.
  • Arriving by train: all ten Takamatsu Station branches are a walk away. Eki Rent-a-Car is to the right after the ticket gate, and Nippon, Orix, Nissan and Heisei are 1 minute from the station. Nippon, Toyota Takamatsu and Eki Rent-a-Car close latest, at 20:00 (Nico Nico on weekdays only).
  • Staying in Takamatsu first: the candidates are the station branches. Toyota Takamatsu and Takamatsu Sunport run a free shuttle to hotels in the old city (09:00–16:00, except Sundays and holidays).
  • Renting at the airport and returning at the station: Nippon, Toyota and Orix have branches at both and take returns at other branches.
  • Keeping the cost down: on standard compact rates before discounts for a Japanese licence, the lowest for 24 hours are Guts at Takamatsu Station (¥4,070) and One's at Takamatsu Airport (¥4,400). Guts includes no vehicle damage cover, and One's mainly rents used cars. Among major companies, Eki Rent-a-Car is ¥8,470, and Toyota and Budget are ¥8,580.

The Takamatsu Station comparison gives hours, routes and prices for each branch there.

Takamatsu Airport and Takamatsu Station compared

The two places differ in how you reach the branch and what happens after you return the car.

  • Takamatsu Airport: branches are outside the airport. You check in at a counter and take a shuttle, 3–6 minutes by car for most. For Heisei, go about 100 m to the right from the arrivals gate to the shuttle waiting area and board the Konan Parking shuttle. For One's, call the shuttle on its dedicated number. On the way back, return the car to the branch and take the shuttle to the airport.
  • Takamatsu Station: you can walk with no shuttle. Eki Rent-a-Car is inside the station, and Nippon, Orix, Toyota Takamatsu, Nissan and Times are together in Nishinomarucho, south of the station. Heisei is also close to the Takamatsu Port ferry piers. Nico Nico Takamatsu Nishikimachi (about 8 minutes on foot) and Guts Takamatsu Kataharamachi (about 700 m from JR Takamatsu Station) are a little further.

At both places, the earliest branches open at 08:00 and the latest close at 20:00. Neither has a 24-hour branch. Walking routes from the station are in the Takamatsu Station comparison. The first table below compares the two places. The tables after it list every branch, with each name linking to its branch page.

The Anshin W plan combines the deductible waiver with an NOC waiver.

Toyota Takamatsu Airport checks you in at the counter in front of the domestic arrivals lobby and takes you to the branch by shuttle in check-in order. The branch is 700 m north of the airport. Near the station are Toyota Takamatsu, about 2 minutes south, and Takamatsu Sunport, about 5 minutes north-west on foot.

Takamatsu Airport and Toyota Takamatsu open 08:00–20:00, and Takamatsu Sunport 08:00–18:00. Toyota Takamatsu closes from 10 to 25 June, when Takamatsu Sunport opens until 20:00. All three accept returns from inside and outside the prefecture, but Toyota Takamatsu does not accept No. 1 registration, T2 or T3 class vehicles.

The standard compact rate (C1) is ¥8,580 for 24 hours on a Japanese licence. Basic collision damage waiver (CDW) still leaves the non-operation charge (NOC) of ¥20,000 or ¥50,000. The Anshin W Plan waives the NOC and also covers tyre repair or replacement after a puncture.

Takamatsu Airport checks you in at the counter diagonally to the left in front of the arrivals lobby and takes you 3 minutes by car to the branch. Takamatsu Ekimae is 1 minute from the station on foot. Both open daily 08:00–20:00. On 31 December 2026 and 1 January 2027, the airport branch closes at 19:00 and Takamatsu Ekimae at 18:00.

At Takamatsu Airport, choose a flight that lets you reach the branch by 20:00; last flights are not served. Takamatsu Airport accepts all classes from other branches, and Takamatsu Ekimae accepts kei and passenger cars, wagons, vans and kei trucks.

The standard compact rate (N-B) is ¥8,910 for 24 hours. CDW does not remove the NOC; a separate scheme called ECO waives it.

The counter in the airport building handles check-in only; you collect the car at the branch. Takamatsu Ekimae is 1 minute from the South Exit of JR Takamatsu Station. Both open daily 08:00–19:00. Both handle departures to and returns from other branches, except Hokkaido, Okinawa and outlying islands.

The standard compact rate (SA) is ¥9,900 for 24 hours. The Rent-a-Car Anshin Pack (RAP) waives the NOC and covers puncture tyre costs up to ¥20,000. If you call at least 1 hour before your due time, an extension of up to 1 hour costs nothing extra.

Coverage
The deductible waiver, Plus and Perfect plans have different coverage scopes.

Takamatsu Nishikimachi is inside an ENEOS petrol station, about 8 minutes on foot from the East Exit of JR Takamatsu Station. Staff can refuel the car when you return it. It opens 08:00–20:00 on weekdays and 08:00–19:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, and some cars allow smoking.

The S class is ¥5,610 for 24 hours and ¥5,610 for each further day. Basic CDW (¥1,100 a day) leaves the vehicle excess after a single-car accident; Perfect cover removes it. One-way rentals are generally not accepted, so compare it on a same-branch return. If the renter or a driver has held a licence for less than one year, someone who has held one for at least three years must ride along from departure.

Reference rates and cover

The table shows standard compact rates at the 12 companies: regular season, before discounts, tax included, for a Japanese licence. A dash means the company does not publish that rate.

Nissan P2 (March, Note) ¥9,790 ¥7,700 ¥1,650 ¥20,790 ¥24,090 —
Orix SA (Fit, Note 1.2) ¥9,900 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥20,020 ¥22,660 —

On a foreign licence, Toyota uses a separate rate list: C1 is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each further 24 hours, against ¥8,580 and ¥7,260 in the table. To rent on a foreign licence, bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention and your passport, or, for licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco or Taiwan, the licence with a Japanese translation and your passport.

Nico Nico requires the renter to complete the contract in Japanese, without an interpreter or translation app, and Guts generally does not rent on an IDP.

The cover names and prices that remove the NOC are compared in CDW and NOC.

Pickup and return in Kagawa

Returning at the airport

Return the car to the branch you booked and take the shuttle to the airport. Set your navigation to the branch, not the airport. Times asks you to return at least 1 hour before your flight. Even when the shuttle ride is short, the return check and the wait for the shuttle take time.

Returning around Takamatsu Station before a ferry

Branches around Takamatsu Station close between 18:00 and 20:00. Toyota Takamatsu Sunport and Heisei close at 18:00. The return time and the boarding deadline are separate, so allow time to refuel, finish the return check and carry your luggage to the pier.

Renting at the airport and returning at Takamatsu Station

Name the pickup and return branches separately when you book. Nippon Takamatsu Ekimae accepts only kei and passenger cars, wagons, vans and kei trucks from other branches, and Toyota Takamatsu does not accept No. 1 registration, T2 or T3 classes. One-way fees differ by company; Nippon and Orix charge nothing when branches are less than 20 km apart. Company rules are in the company rules comparison.

Days on the islands and days touring udon shops

If you will not use a car on the islands, you can compare returning on the mainland and boarding on foot. If you take the car on a ferry, check the vehicle fare, vehicle capacity and booking, and the rental company's conditions for taking a car on board, separately. For days touring udon shops in the suburbs or several areas, driving out from the airport is a candidate. Days in central Takamatsu leave time when the car sits unused, so compare the rental charge and parking with the cost of getting around without one.

Frequently asked questions

Should I rent at Takamatsu Airport or Takamatsu Station?

Takamatsu Airport suits you if you land and set off straight away. Station branches suit a train arrival or the day after a night in Takamatsu. Airport branches are outside the airport and reached by shuttle after check-in, and station branches are a walk. At both, the earliest branches open at 08:00 and the latest close at 20:00.

Which company has the lowest rate?

On standard compact rates before discounts for a Japanese licence, the lowest for 24 hours are Guts at Takamatsu Station (¥4,070), One's at Takamatsu Airport (¥4,400) and Nico Nico at Takamatsu Station (¥5,610). Guts includes no vehicle damage cover and limits you to 300 km per 24 hours. One's mainly rents used cars. Among major companies, Eki Rent-a-Car is ¥8,470, and Toyota and Budget are ¥8,580. Member and online discounts change the booking price, so compare the same dates, class and cover.

Can I rent at Takamatsu Airport and return at Takamatsu Station?

Nippon, Toyota and Orix have branches at both and take returns at other branches. Nippon Takamatsu Ekimae accepts limited classes, and Toyota Takamatsu does not accept No. 1 registration, T2 or T3 classes. A one-way option is not always free, so name the return branch when you book and check the amount.

Can I rent early in the morning or late at night?

Neither place has a 24-hour branch. The earliest open at 08:00 and the latest close at 20:00. At Takamatsu Airport, Times does not serve flights landing at 19:00 or later, and at Nippon you need a flight that lets you reach the branch by 20:00. On a late-flight day, check that you can finish check-in and the shuttle before closing.

Should I keep the car on days I go to the islands?

It depends on whether you use a car on the islands. Compare the cost of returning and boarding on foot with keeping the rental, parking near the port and paying the vehicle fare.
