Ten rental branches at Takamatsu Station: how to choose

Takamatsu Station is the main JR station in Kagawa Prefecture, close to Takamatsu Port on the Seto Inland Sea. It has ten rental branches from nine companies; only Toyota has two. Eki Rent-a-Car is inside the station, and Nippon, Orix, Toyota Takamatsu, Nissan and Times are together in Nishinomarucho, south of the station. You can walk to all of them.

This page compares each branch's address, hours, access and one-way rules, with reference prices and what to allow for before a ferry.

  • Right by the station: Eki Rent-a-Car is to the right after the ticket gate. Nippon, Orix, Nissan and Heisei are one minute away on foot.
  • Returning in the evening: Nippon, Toyota Takamatsu and Eki Rent-a-Car close latest, at 20:00 (Nico Nico on weekdays only). Toyota Takamatsu Sunport and Heisei close at 18:00.
  • Returning at another branch: Nippon, both Toyota branches, Orix and Eki Rent-a-Car take returns at other branches.
  • A lower base rate: on the Japanese-licence standard rates before discounts, Eki Rent-a-Car is lowest among the large companies at ¥8,470 for a compact car for 24 hours. Among smaller companies, Guts is ¥4,070, Nico Nico ¥5,610 and Heisei ¥7,700. Guts includes no vehicle damage cover and limits mileage to 300 km per 24 hours.
  • Around a ferry trip: Heisei is one minute from the station and also close to the Takamatsu Port ferry piers.

The other branch pages do not cover ETC cards, so ask when you book. At Nico Nico, you can rent on an International Driving Permit (IDP) with the permit and your original passport, a Japanese address and a mobile number you can take calls on. The contract is in Japanese only, with no interpreter or translation app. Guts generally does not rent on an IDP.

Reference rates at nine companies

These are compact-car standard rates: regular season, tax included, before discounts, on a Japanese driving licence. The 48-hour total is the first 24 hours, one further day and two days of basic collision damage waiver (CDW). Guts does not publish a further-day rate.

Company and class First 24 hours Each further 24 hours Basic CDW per day 48 hours with basic CDW Minivan (7–8 seats), 24 hours
Guts C-1 (Vitz, March, Fit) ¥4,070 Not published ¥1,100 Not published ¥8,580

Orix SA (Fit, Note 1.2) ¥9,900 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥20,020 ¥22,660

With a foreign licence, Toyota has a separate list: C1 is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each further 24 hours, before optional cover. Get a quote for your own licence and dates at the other companies, because these figures are not a visitor quote.

Read the driving licence guide before you book, and the CDW and NOC guide to see what basic cover leaves you paying.

Branches right by the station and branches a short walk away

Branches fall into four groups. Choosing one close to your hotel or next destination shortens the walk with luggage.

  • Inside the station: Eki Rent-a-Car Takamatsu Station, to the right after the ticket gate, beside the dry cleaner.
  • Right by the station: Nippon (one minute), Orix (one minute from the South Exit), Nissan (one minute south, to the right of Ministop), Heisei (one minute; also close to the Takamatsu Port ferry piers), Toyota Takamatsu (about two minutes south) and Times (about three minutes from the front of the station; look for the yellow sign).
  • On the Sunport side: Toyota Takamatsu Sunport (about five minutes north-west, west of Sunport Tower Building).
  • A little further: Nico Nico Takamatsu Nishikimachi (from the East Exit straight across the station plaza to the ENEOS petrol station, about eight minutes) and Guts Takamatsu Kataharamachi (three minutes from Kotoden Kataharamachi Station; about 700 m from JR Takamatsu Station).

Both Toyota branches run a free shuttle to hotels in the old city (09:00–16:00, except Sundays and holidays). Times may start you from a sub car park rather than the branch, depending on bookings.

Add the car return and luggage to your time for the port

Closing times range from 18:00 to 20:00. Toyota Takamatsu Sunport and Heisei close at 18:00, Orix, Nissan, Times and Guts at 19:00, and Nippon, Toyota Takamatsu and Eki Rent-a-Car at 20:00. Nico Nico closes at 20:00 on weekdays and at 19:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

If you return the car and then board a boat, the return time and the boarding deadline are separate. Allow time to refuel, finish the return check, take out your luggage and reach your terminal. Nico Nico shares a site with a petrol station, and its staff can refuel the car when you return it.

Toyota Takamatsu closes from 10 to 25 June, when Takamatsu Sunport opens until 20:00. Over New Year, Nippon closes at 18:00 on 31 December 2026 and 1 January 2027, and Nissan opens 09:00–18:00 from 26 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. Times closes on 1 January from 2027 and opens 09:00–17:00 on 2 and 3 January. Toyota Takamatsu Sunport closes on 1 January, and Guts closes over New Year.

To rent at the airport and return at the station, name both branches when you book. Nippon Takamatsu Ekimae accepts only kei and passenger cars, wagons, vans and kei trucks from other branches, unlike the Takamatsu Airport branch, which accepts all classes. Toyota Takamatsu does not accept returns of No. 1 registration, T2 or T3 class vehicles. Times can neither rent out nor take back tall or long vehicles.

Taking the car to the islands, or returning on the mainland

If you will not use a car on the islands, you can compare returning on the mainland and boarding on foot. Keeping the car and parking near the port adds the rental charge and parking for days you do not use it. Decide how you will get around the islands first, and then the number of rental days, so unnecessary costs are easier to spot.

If you take the car on a ferry, check the vehicle fare, vehicle capacity and booking, and the rental company's conditions for taking a car on board, separately. Having a sailing does not guarantee space for a car, so have a fallback in case you cannot board the sailing you want.
