Takamatsu Airport has nine rental branches: how to choose

Takamatsu Airport, south of Takamatsu in Kagawa Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, has nine rental branches from nine companies. Most companies have a counter in the arrivals lobby or on 1F of the airport. You check in there and take a shuttle to the branch, about 3–6 minutes by car.

This page compares the counters and shuttles, closing times, returns and one-way rentals, and the reference price at each company.

  • Arriving on an evening flight: Nippon, Toyota, Nissan and Budget close last, at 20:00. Times does not serve flights landing after 19:00, and Sky's last shuttle is at 18:50.
  • Checking in at the airport: the seven companies other than Heisei and One's use a counter in the arrivals lobby or on 1F of the airport. No staff are stationed at the Times counter.
  • Returning somewhere else: Nippon, Toyota and Orix accept returns at other branches.
  • Keeping the cost down: on standard rates before discounts on a Japanese licence, One's is the cheapest at ¥4,400 for a compact for 24 hours, and it uses mainly used cars. Heisei is ¥7,700, and among larger companies Toyota and Budget are ¥8,580.

Reference prices: standard rates at nine companies

This table takes each company's standard rate for a compact car, with the total including basic collision damage waiver (CDW). The total changes with the number of days and the cover you choose. These are regular-season rates before discounts on a Japanese licence, unless a row says otherwise.

Company and class First 24 hours Additional day Basic CDW per day 48 hours with basic CDW Minivan (7–8 seats), 24 hours
One's M (Vitz, Fit, Note). Mainly used cars; rates vary by branch ¥4,400 ¥4,400 ¥1,100 ¥11,000 ¥9,350
Heisei S1 (Fit, Yaris, Swift, Roomy) ¥7,700 ¥6,600 ¥1,100 ¥16,500 ¥18,334
Toyota C1 (Yaris, Passo) ¥8,580 ¥7,260 ¥1,100 ¥18,040 ¥20,900
Budget JS (Yaris, Fit) ¥8,580 ¥7,040 ¥1,430 ¥18,480 ¥21,010
Sky S (Yaris, Fit) ¥8,800 ¥7,480 ¥1,100 ¥18,480 ¥22,000
Times C-1 (Mazda2, Note e-POWER) ¥8,855 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥18,975 ¥22,770
Nippon N-B (Fit, Corolla) ¥8,910 ¥7,150 ¥1,100 ¥18,260 ¥22,550
Nissan P2 (March, Note) ¥9,790 ¥7,700 ¥1,650 ¥20,790 ¥24,090
Orix SA (Fit, Note 1.2) ¥9,900 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥20,020 ¥22,660
  • The 48-hour total is the first 24 hours, one additional day and two days of basic CDW. A dash means the company's rate table does not list that fee. Where basic CDW shows "Included", the rate already contains it. Extra hours, fuel, one-way fees and options such as child seats are not included.
  • Most companies offer member or online discounts, so the booking screen is often cheaper than this table. Peak periods such as Golden Week, Obon and New Year cost more. Enter your dates and class for the actual price.
  • One's uses mainly used cars and charges the same for compact and kei cars. Without road-service cover (¥880 a day), road service costs ¥27,500 per call. Rates vary by branch; M class at Kanazawa Station East Exit is ¥4,700 for 24 hours.
  • Toyota has member discounts of 10% and 20%.
  • Budget has a web member price (10% off).
  • Sky's basic CDW varies by region: ¥1,320 in Hokkaido, ¥1,100 in Honshu and Shikoku, ¥1,430 in Kyushu and ¥1,650 in Okinawa. Members and prepayment each get 5% off.
  • Times has member rates of up to 20% off.
  • Nippon has a separate member rate table.
  • Nissan's basic CDW is calculated on the Standard Plan at ¥1,650 a day.
  • Orix has member discounts and a 5% web discount.

Prices differ by licence. The table uses the Japanese-licence rate. On a foreign licence, Toyota C1 is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each additional 24 hours, before optional cover; the Toyota row above uses the separate Japanese-licence rates of ¥8,580 and ¥7,260. The other companies in the table publish no separate foreign-licence rate here, so get a quote for your own licence.

A foreign licence needs the original licence, a 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit (or an official Japanese translation for licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan) and your passport. See driving in Japan on a foreign licence. Sky rents on a Geneva Convention permit with a passport, or on a foreign licence with a Japanese translation and a passport.

Check in at the arrivals counter, then take the shuttle

Check-in depends on the company.

  • Check in at a counter, then take a shuttle: Nippon (the counter diagonally ahead on the left of the arrivals lobby; 3 minutes by car), Toyota (shuttle in check-in order; the branch is 700 m north of the airport), Orix (the counter ahead on the left of the arrival exit; 3 minutes by car), Nissan (3 minutes by car), Sky (the counter on 1F of the airport; request the shuttle when you book; about 6 minutes) and Budget (about 5 minutes).
  • Unstaffed counter: no staff are stationed at the Times counter in the arrivals lobby. On a flight landing before 08:30, wait in front of the counter.
  • Shared shuttle to the branch: for Heisei, go about 100 m right of the arrival exit to the rental shuttle waiting area, board the Konan Parking shuttle and say you are going to Heisei Rent-a-Car (about 90 seconds). Request the shuttle when you book.
  • Phone for a pick-up: One's shuttle line (080-1003-7915) gets you a free ride to its branch inside the APA Hotel Takamatsu Airport (from 08:30).

Nippon has a phone-based check-in that can skip paperwork if you meet its conditions. It does not remove the procedure for every booking.

Finish the return at the branch before heading to the airport

On your way home, return the car to the branch you booked and take the shuttle to the airport. Set your navigation to the branch, not the airport. Return to Times 1 hour before your flight. Even if the shuttle ride is short, the return inspection and waiting for the shuttle take time.

If you choose to return at Takamatsu Station, name the pickup and return branches separately when you book. Even at companies offering one-way rentals, check separately that your chosen car and return time are accepted.

Takamatsu Airport rental car FAQ

Are there rental counters inside Takamatsu Airport?

Yes. Companies have counters in the arrivals lobby and on 1F of the airport, and after check-in a shuttle takes you to a branch outside the airport.

Can I rent on a flight landing at 20:00?

Assume it will be difficult. If you rent from Nippon, choose a flight that lets you reach the branch by 20:00; last flights are not served. Even at branches closing at 20:00, the time you land and the time you reach the branch are different.

What does one night and two days cost?

On standard rates before discounts and a Japanese licence, a compact with basic CDW for two days comes to ¥11,000–¥20,790 across the nine companies. One's is lowest at ¥11,000, Heisei is ¥16,500, and among larger companies Toyota is ¥18,040. On a foreign licence, Toyota's base rate is higher; see the price section above.

Does phone check-in mean no paperwork for everyone?

No. There are conditions, such as completing advance procedures. Check what your booking requires before you use it.
