Shizuoka has 14 rental branches: choosing by trip

This guide compares rental branches at two Shinkansen stations in Shizuoka Prefecture: six at Mishima Station and eight at Hamamatsu Station, making 14 branches from seven companies.

It shows which station suits your trip, how branches sit around each exit, one-way conditions, closed days and New Year hours, and rates on Japanese and foreign licences.

  • Heading for Izu: Mishima Station's branches suit you. Nissan and Toyota are on the north side (Shinkansen side), and Nippon, J-net and Guts on the south side; all five are within walking distance. Orix Mishima is 1.2 km from the station, with a free pickup from the North Exit.
  • Heading for Lake Hamana or western Shizuoka: Hamamatsu Station's branches suit you. Five are on the south side (Shinkansen side) and three on the north side, all within walking distance.
  • Renting at Mishima and returning at Hamamatsu, or the reverse: Nippon, Toyota and Orix have branches at both stations and accept returns from other branches.
  • Opening hours: at both stations, the earliest branches open at 08:00 and the latest close at 20:00. Nissan's two branches offer unstaffed rental, Self Ride Go, outside staffed hours.
  • Keeping the cost down: on standard compact rates before discounts for a Japanese licence, Guts at both stations (¥4,070 for 24 hours) and Nico Nico at Hamamatsu (¥5,610) are lowest. Guts includes no vehicle damage cover and limits you to 300 km per 24 hours. Toyota at ¥8,580 is lowest among the major companies. Foreign-licence prices and eligibility differ; see the rates section.

The tables below list hours and one-way availability for all 14 branches, with links to their branch pages.

Mishima Station and Hamamatsu Station compared

The two stations differ in how branches are arranged around their exits.

  • Mishima Station: on the north side (Shinkansen side), Nissan Mishima Shinkansen Exit is straight outside, and Toyota Mishima Shinkansen Exit is 2 minutes on foot along the tracks from the Shinkansen gates. On the south side, Nippon is 1 minute on foot, J-net 4 minutes and Guts 7 minutes. Nissan also has an unstaffed rental-only branch in front of the South Exit; staff are at the north-side branch.
  • Hamamatsu Station: on the south side (Shinkansen side) are Toyota Hamamatsu Shinkansen Exit (1 minute), Nippon and Orix (2 minutes), and Nissan and J-net (4 minutes). Toyota Hamamatsu Ekimae is about 350 m east of the North Exit, and Nico Nico and Guts (same address) about 300 m west.

At both stations, leaving by the wrong exit for your branch means walking round to the other side of the station. Branches at Shizuoka Station and Mt. Fuji Shizuoka Airport are not compared here.

At Mishima Station South Exit, you can check in by touching your smartphone on departure, and with advance procedures you can skip showing your licence and signing at the counter.

The N-B compact standard rate is ¥8,910 for 24 hours. CDW does not remove the non-operation charge (NOC); ECO is the separate scheme that waives it.

Coverage
The Anshin W plan combines the deductible waiver with an NOC waiver.

Mishima Shinkansen Exit is 2 minutes on foot along the tracks, to the right after the Shinkansen gates on the north side of Mishima Station. Hamamatsu has two: Hamamatsu Shinkansen Exit is 1 minute (about 200 m) to the left from the South Exit, and Hamamatsu Ekimae is about 350 m east of the North Exit, opposite Act Tower. All open 08:00–20:00, have no shuttle and do not store private cars.

Mishima Shinkansen Exit and Hamamatsu Shinkansen Exit close on 12 November, and Hamamatsu Ekimae closes on 19 April and shuts at 17:00 from 30 December to 3 January. All three accept returns to branches in and outside the prefecture, but on 12 November 2026 Hamamatsu Ekimae limits one-way rentals to within the prefecture.

The C1 compact standard rate is ¥8,580 for 24 hours on a Japanese licence. CDW alone leaves the NOC (¥20,000 or ¥50,000). The Anshin W Plan waives the NOC and also covers repair or replacement of a punctured tyre.

Hamamatsu Ekimae is 2 minutes on foot from Hamamatsu Station and opens daily 08:00–20:00.

Both accept departures for and returns from other branches, excluding Hokkaido, Okinawa and outlying islands. The SA compact standard rate is ¥9,900 for 24 hours. The Rental Anshin Pack (RAP) waives the NOC and covers puncture tyre costs up to ¥20,000. If you call at least an hour before your return time, an extension of up to one hour costs nothing extra.

From the North Exit, turn left and follow the JR viaduct about 300 m west; Hamamatsu Station West is on the left, about 5 minutes on foot from the station. It shares an address with Guts Hamamatsu Ekimae. It opens daily 09:00–19:00 and does not store customers' cars. Nico Nico has no branch at Mishima Station.

The S class standard rate is ¥5,610 for 24 hours and ¥5,610 for each further day. Basic CDW (¥1,100 a day) leaves the vehicle excess after a single-car accident; Perfect cover removes it. One-way rentals are generally not accepted.

J-net Rent a Car (J3) ¥10,450 ¥8,800 ¥1,100 ¥21,450 ¥23,650 —

On a foreign licence, Toyota uses a separate rate list: C1 is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each additional 24 hours, against ¥8,580 and ¥7,260 in the table. To rent on a foreign licence, bring an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention and your passport, or, for licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco or Taiwan, the licence with a Japanese translation and your passport.

Nico Nico requires the renter to complete the contract in Japanese, without an interpreter or translation app, and some branches do not accept an IDP; Guts generally does not rent on an IDP.

The cover names and prices that remove the NOC are compared in CDW and NOC.

Pickup and return in Shizuoka

Returning to Mishima Station from Izu

Orix and Guts close earliest at 19:00, and the other four at 20:00. Orix Mishima may not always be able to run its pickup, so allow for a 20-minute walk to the station after returning. Refuelling, getting in and out of the branch, the return inspection and moving your bags all come before the ticket gate, so avoid a tight train.

Renting at Mishima and returning at Hamamatsu

Name the return branch when you book. Nippon's two branches accept kei cars, passenger cars, wagons, vans and light trucks from other branches. Toyota Hamamatsu Shinkansen Exit excludes trucks on number 1 and 8 plates from one-way use, and Hamamatsu Ekimae excludes vehicles on number 1 plates. One-way fees depend on the company. Nippon and Orix charge nothing when the branches are less than 20 km apart, and a distance-based charge beyond that. The Japan rental-company comparison explains the differences between companies.

Closed days and New Year rentals

Toyota closes Mishima Shinkansen Exit and Hamamatsu Shinkansen Exit on 12 November, and Hamamatsu Ekimae on 19 April. Over New Year, Nissan's two branches open 09:00–18:00 from 30 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, J-net's two branches open 09:00–18:00 from 1 to 3 January 2027, and Guts closes.

Renting only for the day you go to Lake Hamana

If you stay or have business near Hamamatsu Station before heading to Lake Hamana, you can compare renting at the station the next morning. Weigh hotel parking and the rental charge for unused hours against the effort of taking luggage to the branch.
