Hamamatsu Station has eight rental branches: how to choose

Hamamatsu Station, on the Tokaido Shinkansen in Shizuoka Prefecture, has eight rental branches from seven companies, with two from Toyota. On the south (Shinkansen) side are Nippon, Toyota Hamamatsu Shinkansen-guchi, Orix, Nissan and J-Net. On the north side are Toyota Hamamatsu Ekimae, Nico Nico and Guts. You walk to all of them from the station.

This page compares the walking routes by exit, closing times and closing days, returns and one-way rentals, and the reference price at each company.

  • Renting early or late: six branches open 08:00–20:00, all except Nico Nico and Guts (09:00–19:00).
  • Right by the station: Toyota Hamamatsu Shinkansen-guchi is 1 minute on foot to the left from the south exit, and Nippon and Orix are 2 minutes.
  • Returning a car rented elsewhere at Hamamatsu Station: Nippon and both Toyota branches have conditions on the type of car. Orix handles one-way rentals except for Hokkaido, Okinawa and outlying islands.
  • Keeping the cost down: on standard rates before discounts on a Japanese licence, Toyota is the cheapest larger company at ¥8,580 for a compact for 24 hours. Among smaller companies, Guts is ¥4,070 and Nico Nico ¥5,610. Guts includes no vehicle damage cover and limits distance to 300 km per 24 hours.
  • Watch closing days: Toyota Hamamatsu Shinkansen-guchi closes on 12 November, and Toyota Hamamatsu Ekimae on 19 April.

Reference prices: standard rates at seven companies

This table takes each company's published standard rate for a compact car, with the total including basic collision damage waiver (CDW). These are regular-season rates before discounts on a Japanese licence, unless a row says otherwise.

Company and class First 24 hours Additional day Basic CDW per day 48 hours with basic CDW Minivan (7–8 seats), 24 hours
Guts C-1 (Vitz, March, Fit). No vehicle damage cover; 300 km per 24 hours included ¥4,070 — ¥1,100 — ¥8,580
Nico Nico S (Aqua, Yaris, Roomy). Basic CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident ¥5,610 ¥5,610 ¥1,100 ¥13,420 ¥15,180
Toyota C1 (Yaris, Passo) ¥8,580 ¥7,260 ¥1,100 ¥18,040 ¥20,900
Nippon N-B (Fit, Corolla) ¥8,910 ¥7,150 ¥1,100 ¥18,260 ¥22,550
Nissan P2 (March, Note) ¥9,790 ¥7,700 ¥1,650 ¥20,790 ¥24,090
Orix SA (Fit, Note 1.2) ¥9,900 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥20,020 ¥22,660
J-Net J3 (Yaris, Fit, Mazda2) ¥10,450 ¥8,800 ¥1,100 ¥21,450 ¥23,650
  • The 48-hour total is the first 24 hours, one additional day and two days of basic CDW. A dash means the company's rate table does not list that fee. Where basic CDW shows "Included", the rate already contains it. Extra hours, fuel, one-way fees and options such as child seats are not included.
  • Most companies offer member or online discounts, so the booking screen is often cheaper than this table. Peak periods such as Golden Week, Obon and New Year cost more. Enter your dates and class for the actual price.
  • Guts's base rate does not include vehicle damage cover, so you pay up to ¥50,000 or ¥100,000 after an accident (waived if you take basic CDW). The NOC is ¥30,000 even if the car can be driven.
  • Guts includes 300 km per 24 hours, and each extra kilometre costs ¥11. Its table does not list a daily rate from the second day.
  • Nico Nico's basic CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident.
  • Toyota has member discounts of 10% and 20%.
  • Nippon has a separate member rate table.
  • Nissan's basic CDW is calculated on the Standard Plan at ¥1,650 a day.
  • Orix has member discounts and a 5% web discount.
  • J-Net's basic CDW (Anshin cover) is ¥1,650 a day in the Okinawa district only.

Prices differ by licence. The table uses the Japanese-licence rate. On a foreign licence, Toyota C1 is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each additional 24 hours, before optional cover; the Toyota row above uses the separate Japanese-licence rates of ¥8,580 and ¥7,260. The other companies in the table publish no separate foreign-licence rate here, so get a quote for your own licence.

A foreign licence needs the original licence, a 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit (or an official Japanese translation for licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan) and your passport. See driving in Japan on a foreign licence. Nico Nico accepts an International Driving Permit only at some branches, requires the renter to complete the contract in Japanese without an interpreter or translation app, and asks for an address in Japan and a phone number that can take calls. Guts does not normally rent on an International Driving Permit.

Choose the branch near your station exit

The nearest branch depends on whether you leave by the south (Shinkansen) or north side. A branch on the same side as your hotel or next destination saves crossing the station.

  • South (Shinkansen) exit: Toyota Hamamatsu Shinkansen-guchi (left from the south exit, 1 minute, about 200 m), Nippon Hamamatsu Station South Exit (2 minutes), Orix Hamamatsu Ekimae (2 minutes, 134 m from the station), Nissan Hamamatsu Shinkansen-guchi (in front of the Sunny Building at the Sunayama-higashi junction) and J-Net Hamamatsu Ekimae (4 minutes).
  • East from the north exit: Toyota Hamamatsu Ekimae (about 350 m, facing Act Tower).
  • West from the north exit: Nico Nico Hamamatsu Station West and Guts Hamamatsu Ekimae (same address, about 5 minutes). Leave the north exit and go left along the JR viaduct, about 300 m west; it is on the left.

"Ekimae" in a branch name does not always mean the same exit. Toyota Hamamatsu Ekimae is on the north side, Orix and J-Net Hamamatsu Ekimae are on the south side, and Guts Hamamatsu Ekimae is a walk west from the north exit.

The two Toyota branches are separate, with different closing days and New Year hours.

Check your return branch's closing time and closing days

Nico Nico and Guts close earliest, at 19:00, and the other six at 20:00.

Toyota Hamamatsu Shinkansen-guchi closes on 12 November, and on that day Toyota Hamamatsu Ekimae limits one-way rentals to the prefecture. Toyota Hamamatsu Ekimae closes on 19 April and at 17:00 from 30 December to 3 January.

At New Year, Nissan opens 09:00–18:00 from 30 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, J-Net opens 09:00–18:00 from 31 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, and Guts closes.

To return by car to Nippon Hamamatsu Station South Exit, enter the return mapcode 26 103 762*51 in the navigation. The mapcode showing the branch's location (26 103 796) is a different one.

To return a car rented elsewhere at Hamamatsu Station, choose a branch that accepts it. Nippon accepts kei cars, passenger cars, wagons, vans and kei trucks.

Toyota Hamamatsu Shinkansen-guchi does not rent or accept 1 or 8-number trucks, and Hamamatsu Ekimae excludes 1-number cars from one-way rentals. Orix handles one-way rentals except for Hokkaido, Okinawa and outlying islands.

Include the walk back to the station in your train plans.

Compare renting only on the day you head towards Lake Hamana

If you stay or have business near Hamamatsu Station before going towards Lake Hamana, you can compare renting at the station the next morning. Consider whether you can cut hotel parking and the rental hours you do not use, along with the effort of taking your luggage to the branch.

On your return, add refuelling and the return inspection to your time back from the lake. On a trip changing hotels, returning at a different station is also an option. Decide by both the total with your named return branch and the time saved by not coming back.
