The road
A long, steep climb starts just after Odawara Tollgate. The wide road and smooth curves made me feel comfortable driving up the mountain.
Best stretch
From viewpoints on the climb, I could look down over Sagami Bay toward Odawara and Shonan. At Taikanzan, Lake Ashi and Mount Fuji spread out in front of me.
Crowds
On my weekend visit, the parking area at Taikanzan was full of sports cars and motorcycles.
Season & weather
Fog can appear suddenly on the climb and hide the view from Taikanzan. The top felt much colder and windier than below; I would bring a jacket.
Car meets & manners
Use marked parking spaces, avoid revving your engine or occupying spaces for long gatherings, and follow the road rules, including the ban on U-turns.

In a wordA steep climb, but the wide road felt comfortable to drive. Lake Ashi and Mount Fuji await in clear weather. Bring a jacket for the cold and fog.

The Hakone Turnpike climbs from Odawara to Taikanzan in the Hakone mountains. Its full name is ANEST IWATA Turnpike Hakone, and the ANEST IWATA Sky Lounge at the top overlooks Lake Ashi and Mount Fuji on a clear day.

Standard ETC does not work on this road. Bring cash unless you have registered for the separate ETCX service.

Route and map

  1. 1Taikanzan Sky Lounge

Odawara toll gate → main line (about 13.5 km) → 1 Taikanzan Sky Lounge; the link road continues to Yugawara Pass

Odawara Tollgate connects directly to Hayakawa Junction on the Seisho Bypass. It is about 600 m from Odawara-nishi Interchange on the Odawara–Atsugi Road.

From the tollgate, the drive to Taikanzan is about 13.5 km and 20 minutes. These route estimates come from map data and exclude traffic. The climb starts soon after the tollgate, with a maximum gradient of 10%. From Taikanzan, you can return to Odawara, continue toward Yugawara Pass via the Hakone–Izu connecting line, or take Prefectural Route 75, the Tsubaki Line, in front of the Sky Lounge.

Taka's driving notes: The steep climb began just after Odawara Tollgate and continued for quite a while. Even so, the road was wide and the curves were smooth, so I felt comfortable driving up the mountain. From viewpoints along the climb, I could look down over Sagami Bay toward Odawara and Shonan. At Taikanzan, Lake Ashi and Mount Fuji opened up in front of me.

There are five parking areas along the main line. Pull into one before taking in the view. At Taikanzan, use the parking areas around the Sky Lounge, marked A–F on the site plan.

Sky Lounge and Tea Lounge

The Sky Lounge looks toward Mount Fuji and Lake Ashi on the mountain side, and toward Hatsushima, Oshima, the Miura Peninsula and the Boso Peninsula on the sea side. Its usual hours are 9:30–16:00 on weekdays and 8:00–17:00 on weekends and public holidays. The second-floor Tea Lounge normally opens 10:00–15:30 on weekdays and 10:00–16:00 on weekends and public holidays. There is no regular closing day, but the lounge closes when the road is closed.

Tea Lounge exceptions, checked 1 November 2026: It is closed all day on 1 November and from 30 November to 4 December for private bookings. On 10 November, it opens only 10:00–12:30, with last orders at 12:00. These exceptions apply to the second-floor Tea Lounge.

The first floor has a food court and souvenir shops. There is also a two-person swing, a dog run and a piano for visitors to play. Although the road stays open until 22:30 under normal conditions, the lounges close in the afternoon. Arrive during the day if you want a break inside.

Taka's driving notes: I was able to take a break in the lounge at Taikanzan while looking out at the scenery.

Opening times and restrictions

Payment: standard ETC is not accepted

An ETC card in the car's reader is not enough to pay the toll here. Payment options are cash, prepaid toll tickets and ETCX, a separate cashless service that requires advance registration. A book of 11 toll tickets costs the same as 10 individual passages.

With ETCX, you must stop at the tollgate and wait for the payment-complete signal. If you have not registered for ETCX, bring cash.

Vehicle restrictions and road rules

Motorcycles with an engine capacity of 125 cc or less, electric motorcycles with motor output of 1.0 kW or less, mopeds, electric kick scooters, bicycles and pedestrians are not allowed. U-turns are prohibited. Driving back to Odawara requires another toll payment.

Fog, snow and ice

Opening and closing times may change with the weather. If snow or ice closes the road, the Sky Lounge closes too. Check the operator's current notices before setting out in winter; the winter road guide explains how to plan around closures.

Taka's driving notes: Fog can appear suddenly during the climb and hide the view from Taikanzan. I also found it much colder and windier at the top than below, so I would bring a jacket.

Slow down when fog reduces visibility. Do not stop on the road to look for a view.

Best seasons and crowds

Around 1,000 cherry trees line the road. The stretch between the 2 km and 7 km markers forms a cherry-blossom tunnel, climbing through elevations of about 200–600 m. Blossoms usually open about a week to 10 days later than in central Odawara, with flowering progressing from the lower sections uphill.

Clearer air in autumn and winter can bring views of Mount Fuji from Taikanzan, but visibility depends on the weather.

Taka's driving notes: On my weekend visit, the parking area at Taikanzan was full of sports cars and motorcycles.

Taikanzan can be busy at weekends. Park within the marked spaces, avoid revving your engine and do not occupy spaces for long gatherings. Ask the owner before photographing someone else's car or motorcycle.

Getting there and fuel

From Tokyo, approach via Odawara-nishi Interchange on the Odawara–Atsugi Road. From Shonan, use Hayakawa Junction on the Seisho Bypass. The Turnpike is about 7 km from Atami-toge Interchange on the Izu Skyline, so you can also continue from Taikanzan toward Izu. Check your fuel in Odawara before climbing.

If you don't have a car
