Choosing a rental car in Kanagawa

This guide compares 12 branches from six companies around two stations: seven at Odawara and five at Yokohama. Choose the station for your route first, then compare opening hours, the walk to the branch and where you can return the car.

  • For Hakone or Izu: Odawara's west exit, on the Shinkansen side, has Nippon, Nissan and Toyota's Shinkansen Exit branch. Nippon and Nissan are a one-minute walk away. Orix is two minutes from the east exit, and Toyota Odawara Ekimae is one minute from the station.
  • For Shonan or the Miura Peninsula from Yokohama: Nippon, Orix, Nissan and Toyota are on the west side. One's is three minutes from the east exit.
  • For an early start or late return: Nippon Yokohama Station West Exit opens 7:00–22:00. In Odawara, Nico Nico Ogicho stays open until 21:00.
  • For a one-way rental: Nippon, Orix and Toyota's Shinkansen Exit and Yokohama Central West Exit branches are options, subject to the return branch and car class. Toyota Odawara Ekimae allows departure for another branch but does not accept cars rented elsewhere.
  • For a lower base rate: among the four major companies compared here, Toyota's Japanese-licence C1 reference rate is lowest at ¥8,580 for 24 hours. Nico Nico's S class is ¥5,610. One's Yokohama East Exit lists a branch-specific general M-class rate of ¥5,445. These are different products, not like-for-like booking quotes; foreign-licence pricing and eligibility also matter.

Odawara Station or Yokohama Station?

Odawara has branches on both the Shinkansen side and the east side. The five major-company branches are close to the station. Nico Nico Hamacho is about 13 minutes' walk from the east exit; Ogicho provides a shuttle from the west exit. At Toyota's Shinkansen Exit branch, complete the paperwork at the reception counter to the left of the west-exit roundabout, then collect the car at the branch about 100 m away. Return it to the branch.

Yokohama has four branches on the west side and One's on the east side. Some are inside car parks. Nissan cannot handle vehicles 2 m 20 cm tall or higher. Its branch information flags busy periods at 8:00–11:00 and 20:00–22:00, but gives staffed hours as 8:00–20:00; arrange any return outside those hours directly with the branch.

Pickup area Branches in this guide Opening and closing times across the branches Where to start

Coverage

Hamacho is inside a petrol station about 13 minutes' walk from Odawara's east exit and opens 8:00–20:00. Ogicho opens 8:00–21:00 and provides a free west-exit shuttle from 8:20 to 20:40 for up to three people. Children under six cannot ride in the shuttle. Ogicho also offers after-hours returns subject to advance arrangements.

Nico Nico generally requires return to the pickup branch. S-class standard rental is ¥5,610 for the first 24 hours and each additional day. Basic CDW costs ¥1,100 per day but leaves the vehicle excess after a single-car accident; Perfect coverage is the option to consider for that exposure. Foreign-licence renters must also check branch acceptance and Japanese-language contract requirements before treating these prices as a usable option.

Reference rates and coverage

These are regular-season, tax-inclusive reference rates before discounts, drawn from the Japanese-licence comparison. Toyota uses separate pricing for foreign licences. Match the dates, car class, licence and coverage in the actual booking quote before choosing a company.

For a foreign-licence booking, Toyota C1's regular base rate is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each additional 24 hours, before optional coverage. The Toyota row below uses the separate Japanese-licence rates of ¥8,580 and ¥7,260.

Company and class First 24 hours Each additional 24 hours Basic CDW per day 48 hours with basic CDW
Toyota C1 ¥8,580 ¥7,260 ¥1,100 ¥18,040
Nippon N-B ¥8,910 ¥7,150 ¥1,100 ¥18,260
Orix SA ¥9,900 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥20,020
Nissan P2 ¥9,790 ¥7,700 ¥1,650 ¥20,790
Nico Nico S ¥5,610 ¥5,610 ¥1,100 ¥13,420

One's Yokohama East Exit has its own M-class schedule: ¥5,445 for 24 hours at the general rate, or ¥4,840 at the member rate. A high-season surcharge of ¥1,650 per 24 hours applies, including the New Year period. Ask for the full quote for a longer rental with coverage.

Tolls are additional. Basic CDW and a waiver of the NOC are different: compare the coverage options in the rental-company guide.

Pickup and return in Kanagawa

Renting at Odawara for Hakone

Odawara works well when you need to take luggage to a Hakone hotel and visit several places by car. Check the hotel's parking arrangements and charges before booking. Toyota Odawara Ekimae closes at 18:00; a Shinkansen-side branch offers more time for an evening return.

Returning at Yokohama Station

Use the branch's return MAPCODE in the navigation system: Nippon Yokohama West Exit is 8 765 750*57, and Toyota Central West Exit is 2179767*46. Allow time to enter the car park and complete the return, and resolve Nissan's late-hour arrangements before the rental rather than relying on a 24-hour label.

A one-way rental between Odawara and Yokohama

Nippon, Toyota and Orix have branches at both stations; choose Toyota's Shinkansen Exit branch if returning to Odawara. Nissan also has branches at both stations, but confirm that your particular one-way route is available. Fees depend on the company, route and car class. Set the return branch when booking and check the quoted total.
