Seven rental branches at Odawara Station: how to choose

This guide compares seven branches from five companies around Odawara Station. Toyota and Nico Nico each have two branches. Nippon, Toyota Shinkansen Exit and Nissan are on the west, or Shinkansen, side; Orix and Toyota Odawara Ekimae are on the east side. Those five branches are one or two minutes' walk from the station. Nico Nico Hamacho is about 13 minutes from the east exit, while Ogicho collects customers from the west exit.

  • Early pickup or late return: all seven open at 8:00 except Orix on weekdays, when it opens at 9:00. Ogicho closes latest at 21:00; Toyota Ekimae closes at 18:00.
  • A short walk: Nippon, Nissan, Toyota Shinkansen Exit and Toyota Ekimae are one minute away. Orix is two minutes from the east exit.
  • A one-way rental: Nippon, Toyota Shinkansen Exit and Orix accept returns from other branches, subject to conditions. Toyota Ekimae does not accept incoming one-way returns, although you can depart there for another Toyota branch.
  • A lower base rate: Toyota C1 is ¥8,580 for 24 hours on the Japanese-licence reference schedule, the lowest of the four major companies compared here. Nico Nico S is ¥5,610, but basic CDW leaves the vehicle excess after a single-car accident. Foreign-licence eligibility and pricing must be checked separately.
  • Toyota Shinkansen Exit pickup: complete the paperwork at the west-exit reception counter, then collect the car at the branch about 100 m away. Return to the branch, not the counter.

Toyota and Orix list ETC-card rental; Nissan also offers it. Ogicho's ETC-card rental is ¥330. At Nico Nico, the renter must handle the contract in Japanese without an interpreter or translation app, and IDP acceptance varies by branch. Read the foreign-licence guide before booking.

Reference rates at five companies

The table uses regular-season, tax-inclusive standard rates before discounts, on the Japanese-licence basis used in the company comparison. The 48-hour figure is the first 24 hours plus one additional day and two days of basic CDW. Toyota has separate foreign-licence pricing; these figures are not a quote for an overseas visitor.

For a foreign-licence booking, Toyota C1's regular base rate is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each additional 24 hours, before optional coverage. The Toyota row below uses the separate Japanese-licence rates of ¥8,580 and ¥7,260.

Company and class First 24 hours Additional day Basic CDW per day 48 hours with basic CDW
Toyota C1 ¥8,580 ¥7,260 ¥1,100 ¥18,040
Nippon N-B ¥8,910 ¥7,150 ¥1,100 ¥18,260
Orix SA ¥9,900 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥20,020
Nissan P2 ¥9,790 ¥7,700 ¥1,650 ¥20,790
Nico Nico S ¥5,610 ¥5,610 ¥1,100 ¥13,420

Basic CDW does not necessarily waive the NOC or every accident excess. Compare the plan details and a quote for your licence, dates and car class before booking.

Choose the branch on your side of the station

A branch's convenience depends on whether you leave through the west exit on the Shinkansen side or the east exit. Staying on the side of your hotel or onward route can save a trip back through the station.

  • West exit: Nippon and Nissan are each one minute away. Toyota's Shinkansen Exit branch is also one minute away: turn left out of the exit, continue 50 m along the Shinkansen tracks and find the branch underneath the railway.
  • East side: Toyota Ekimae in Sakaecho 2-chome is one minute away; Orix is two minutes from the east exit.
  • About 13 minutes from the east exit: for Nico Nico Hamacho, continue straight beyond the station roundabout, then turn left at the footbridge by the civic hall. Check in at the petrol-station counter.
  • West-exit collection: for Nico Nico Ogicho, call after arriving and wait by the Hojo Soun statue in the centre of the roundabout. The shuttle runs 8:20–20:40, carries up to three customers and cannot take children under six. You cannot reserve a precise collection time.

For Toyota Shinkansen Exit, go first to the reception counter in Shiroyama Tower Plaza 102, on the left of the west-exit roundabout. After the paperwork, staff direct you to the branch about 100 m away. Follow the pickup instructions rather than going straight to the car park. Nissan also houses the Eki Rent-a-Car Odawara counter, which requires a separate Eki reservation.

Check closing times and holiday dates before returning

Toyota Odawara Ekimae closes at 18:00 and is closed on January 1, May 2–6, August 8–16 and October 18. Orix closes at 19:00 on weekdays and 20:00 on weekends and public holidays. Nissan's New Year hours are 9:00–18:00 from December 30, 2026 to January 4, 2027. Check Orix's calendar for its holiday schedule.

Return a Toyota Shinkansen Exit car to the branch underneath the railway, not to the reception counter used at departure. Nico Nico Ogicho offers after-hours returns, but arrange the return time and conditions when booking.

For an incoming one-way rental, Nippon accepts kei and passenger cars, wagons, vans and light trucks; Orix excludes Hokkaido, Okinawa and outlying islands. Toyota Ekimae does not accept incoming one-way returns and cannot handle vehicles with Japanese registration classifications 1 or 2, or W4 and V4 classes; the Shinkansen Exit branch handles larger vehicles.

If you have a train to catch, allow time for refuelling, entering the branch, the return inspection and the walk to the station.

Decide when you need a car in Hakone

Renting at Odawara is useful for taking luggage to a Hakone hotel and making several stops. If most of your sightseeing will be by rail or bus, compare those fares with the rental and parking costs. Separate the days when a car helps from those when it will stay parked.

On the return journey, allow for traffic down from Hakone, refuelling and the branch's closing time. Toyota Ekimae closes at 18:00 and Orix at 19:00 on weekdays. There is no single safe interval before a train departure; leave a margin for the day's road conditions.
