Eight rental branches at Nagano Station: how to choose

Nagano Station has eight rental branches from eight companies. Toyota, Orix, Eki Rent-a-Car and Times are on the Zenkoji Exit side, and Nippon, Nissan and J-net are on the East Exit side. Guts is in Sanaecho, 14 minutes from the station. You walk to all of them.

This page compares each branch's address, hours, walking route and rules on one-way returns, with reference prices and winter and New Year hours.

  • A short walk: Eki Rent-a-Car is on the left of the Zenkoji Exit, on the first floor of the MIDORI station building. Nissan on the East Exit side is one minute, down from the pedestrian deck.
  • Late or early: Nippon, Toyota, Nissan and J-net close last, at 20:00. Times closes at 18:00. For a night or early-morning departure, Orix has a 24-hour self-service plan, on terms that differ from a normal booking.
  • Returning at another branch: Nippon, Toyota, Orix and Eki Rent-a-Car handle returns to other branches. Times does not accept cars rented elsewhere.
  • Winter rental: Nissan shortens its hours to 08:30–19:00 from 1 to 29 December 2026 and from 5 January to 28 February 2027, with studless tyres as standard from 1 December 2026 to 31 March 2027. Guts charges for studless tyres from 1 December to 31 March.
  • A lower base rate: on the Japanese-licence standard rates before discounts, Eki Rent-a-Car is lowest among the large companies at ¥8,470 for a compact car for 24 hours. Guts is ¥4,070, but includes no vehicle damage cover and limits mileage to 300 km per 24 hours.

Toyota, Orix and Nissan lend ETC cards for expressway tolls. Times does not, and some of its cars have no ETC reader. J-net passenger cars, minivans and wagons have an ETC reader as standard, and Guts offers one as an option. The Nippon and Eki Rent-a-Car pages do not cover ETC cards, so ask when you book. Guts does not normally rent on an International Driving Permit (IDP).

Reference rates at eight companies

These are compact-car standard rates: regular season, tax included, before discounts, on a Japanese driving licence. The 48-hour total is the first 24 hours, one further day and two days of basic collision damage waiver (CDW). Guts does not publish a further-day rate.

Company and class First 24 hours Each further 24 hours Basic CDW per day 48 hours with basic CDW Minivan (7–8 seats), 24 hours
Guts C-1 (Vitz, March, Fit) ¥4,070 Not published ¥1,100 Not published ¥8,580

Toyota C1 (Yaris, Passo) ¥8,580 ¥7,260 ¥1,100 ¥18,040 ¥20,900

Orix SA (Fit, Note 1.2) ¥9,900 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥20,020 ¥22,660
J-net J3 (Yaris, Fit, Mazda2) ¥10,450 ¥8,800 ¥1,100 ¥21,450 ¥23,650

With a foreign licence, Toyota has a separate list: C1 is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each further 24 hours, before optional cover. Get a quote for your own licence and dates at the other companies, because these figures are not a visitor quote.

Read the driving licence guide before you book, and the CDW and NOC guide to see what basic cover leaves you paying.

Choose the branch near your station exit

The nearest branch depends on whether you leave by the Zenkoji or East Exit. A branch on the same side as your hotel or your next destination saves crossing the station.

  • Zenkoji Exit: Eki Rent-a-Car (on the left, first floor of the MIDORI station building), Toyota Nagano (three minutes), Orix Nagano Ekimae (three minutes, 180 m from the station) and Times (about ten minutes).
  • East Exit: Nissan (one minute, down from the pedestrian deck), J-net East Exit (four minutes from the station) and Nippon (six minutes).
  • Further out: Guts Nagano is 14 minutes from the station. It is four minutes from both Shiyakusho-mae Station on the Nagano Electric Railway and the Shiyakusho-iriguchi stop of the Gururin loop bus.

Nippon's branch page has route guides as PDFs for walking from the Shinkansen gates. An address search may not find J-net, so search for the branch name, J-net Rent-a-Car Nagano Station East Exit. The names of Toyota Nagano and Guts Nagano do not include the word "station". Note the name and address in your booking so you go to the right place.

Check closing times and New Year hours before returning

Closing times vary from 18:00 to 20:00. Times closes at 18:00, Orix, Eki Rent-a-Car and Guts at 19:00, and Nippon, Toyota, Nissan and J-net at 20:00 (Nissan at 19:00 in its winter period). If you come back from the mountains in the evening, choose your train after adding refuelling, the return paperwork and the walk to the station.

Hours are shorter over New Year. Nippon, Toyota and J-net are open 09:00–18:00 from 31 December to 3 January, and Nissan 09:00–17:00 from 30 December 2026 to 4 January 2027. Guts closes at New Year, Golden Week and in summer, and every Wednesday.

If you rent here and return somewhere else, such as Matsumoto Station, or return a car rented elsewhere at Nagano Station, name the return branch when you book. Times does not accept cars rented elsewhere. Because of its car park, Nissan cannot handle trucks and microbuses (T4–T6 and M1 classes) for pickup or return.

Winter: check equipment and open roads separately

Check whether winter tyres or 4WD come with your booking in the description of the product you reserve. Nissan East Exit has studless tyres as standard from 1 December 2026 to 31 March 2027. Guts Nagano charges for studless tyres on rentals from 1 December to 31 March. At other companies, read how tyres and drive type are described for your booking.

Having the equipment does not mean your road is open. On a day heading into the mountains, also check road restrictions and whether your destination is open. If you are not used to snow, also compare a shorter drive that returns in daylight.

Separating days in the city, such as around Zenkoji Temple, from days out of the city lets you compare overnight rental and parking costs for a car you are not using. Include the effort of moving from your hotel to a station branch, and consider renting only on driving days.

What does a two-day rental cost?

For a compact car with basic CDW for two days, the Japanese-licence standard rates before discounts come to ¥17,820–¥20,790 at the six large companies. Eki Rent-a-Car is lowest at ¥17,820.
