34 rental branches at New Chitose Airport: how to choose
New Chitose Airport, south-east of Sapporo in Hokkaido, has 34 rental branches from 29 companies. No company hands over cars inside the terminal: every branch is in Chitose, Tomakomai or Eniwa and is reached by shuttle. Ten branches, including Nippon, Toyota and Orix, check you in at a counter on 1F of the domestic terminal before you board a shuttle bus, and most other companies send a shuttle to the permitted-vehicle stops outside.
This page compares where each company checks you in and picks you up, seasonal opening hours, one-way returns, and reference prices on Japanese and foreign licences.
- Arriving at night or returning late: the latest closing times are at Nippon (21:00 from November to March, otherwise 22:00) and Carsta Rinku Eniwa Megumino (22:00), and Nikku is open until 21:00. The two Toyota branches (November to March) and Nissan (October to March) close at 20:00. Nico Nico New Chitose Airport handles flights landing up to 18:10, and Times and Eki Rent-a-Car run no shuttle outside opening hours.
- Checking in at the airport: ten branches have a counter on 1F of the domestic terminal: Nippon, Toyota (two branches), Orix, Nissan, Times, Eki Rent-a-Car, Honda Lease Sapporo Chitose, Worldnet and MID.
- Returning to a different branch: Nippon, the two Toyota branches, Orix (within Hokkaido), Nissan, Eki Rent-a-Car and Carsta Rinku Eniwa Megumino (to its Memanbetsu Airport branch) accept one-way returns. Nico Nico New Chitose Airport, North and Amuse do not.
- Keeping the cost down: on standard rates before discounts and on a Japanese licence, Eki Rent-a-Car is the cheapest major company for a compact at ¥8,470 for 24 hours. Among smaller companies, One's is ¥4,400, Carsta ¥4,500 and Nico Nico ¥5,610. One's New Chitose Airport and Carsta Shirakaba mainly have large vehicles, so check when you book whether a compact is available.
- Renting this winter: many branches close earlier from 1 November (Orix and J-Net at 19:00, Eki Rent-a-Car at 18:00). Sky moves to 3-chome Ryutsu in Chitose on 5 November 2026, with the same pick-up stop and phone number.

Branch names link to their official pages. The numbers identify the branches and are not a ranking. Every branch is outside the airport, so in the Access column look first for where you check in and how you call the shuttle. Many branches close earlier in winter (roughly November to March), so read the Hours column down to the seasonal times.

- The 48-hour total is the first 24 hours, one additional day and two days of basic CDW. A dash means the company's rate table does not list that fee. Where basic CDW shows "Included", the rate already contains it. Extra hours, fuel, one-way fees and options such as child seats are not included.
- Most companies offer member or online discounts, so the booking screen is often cheaper than this table. Peak periods such as Golden Week, Obon and New Year cost more. Enter your dates and class for the actual price.
- One's uses mainly used cars and charges the same for compact and kei cars. Without road-service cover (¥880 a day), road service costs ¥27,500 per call. Rates vary by branch; M class at Kanazawa Station East Exit is ¥4,700 for 24 hours.
- Carsta's rate table does not say whether tax is included. From the second day the charge is ¥2,250 per 12 hours, and new and hybrid cars cost 30% more.
- Nico Nico's basic CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident.
- Eki Rent-a-Car has discounts of up to 10%, depending on the branch.
- Toyota has member discounts of 10% and 20%. Branches in the 23 wards of Tokyo, Oshima and Narita Airport use the Tokyo rate.
- Sky's basic CDW varies by region: ¥1,320 in Hokkaido, ¥1,100 in Honshu and Shikoku, ¥1,430 in Kyushu and ¥1,650 in Okinawa. Members and prepayment each get 5% off.
- Times has member rates of up to 20% off.
- Nippon has a separate member rate table.
- Nissan's basic CDW is calculated on the Standard Plan at ¥1,650 a day.
- Orix has member discounts and a 5% web discount.
- J-Net's basic CDW (Anshin cover) is ¥1,650 a day in the Okinawa area only.
Prices differ by licence. The table uses the Japanese-licence rate. On a foreign licence, Toyota C1 is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each additional 24 hours, before optional cover; the Toyota row above uses the separate Japanese-licence rates of ¥8,580 and ¥7,260. The other companies in the table publish no separate foreign-licence rate here, so get a quote for your own licence.
A foreign licence needs the original licence, a 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit (or an official Japanese translation for licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan) and your passport. See driving in Japan on a foreign licence. Nico Nico accepts an International Driving Permit only at some branches, requires the renter to complete the contract in Japanese without an interpreter or translation app, and asks for an address in Japan and a phone number that can take calls. Sky rents on a Geneva Convention permit with a passport, or on a foreign licence with a Japanese translation and a passport.
From arrival to check-in: a counter or the permitted-vehicle stops outside
At New Chitose Airport, the check-in point and shuttle stop differ by company. Shuttles for companies without a counter come to the permitted-vehicle stops outside the terminal. The main ones are stops 1–10 beside the police box, to the left as you leave the arrivals lobby (the south side, by the arrivals used by JAL and others), and stop 30 to the right (the north side, by the arrivals used by ANA and others).
Branches that check you in at a domestic counter
- Check in at the counter, then take the shuttle bus to the branch: Nippon (near Arrivals Exit 3; 10–15 minutes to the branch), Toyota (Poplar near the middle of the arrivals lobby, Suzuran near Exit 3 of the ANA-side arrivals; about nine minutes for both), Orix (about 10 minutes), Nissan (seven minutes by car), Times (usually about 10 minutes, about 15 at busy times), Eki Rent-a-Car, Worldnet (near Arrivals Exit 3; about 10–15 minutes), MID (near ANA-side Arrivals Exit 3) and Honda Lease Sapporo Chitose (about 15 minutes).
- Phone from the counter when no staff are there: use the phone at the counter to call the branch at Nippon when no staff are present, at Toyota Suzuran and Honda Lease Sapporo from 17:00, and at Worldnet outside 08:00–17:00.
- Arrange it at a tour desk: for KUHL, give your booking at the Hokkaido Tour Desk between JAL Arrivals Exits 4 and 5 and staff arrange the shuttle bus (about 10 minutes to the branch).
Because of renovation works, Worldnet passengers landing at Arrivals Exits 4 and 5 (JAL, Skymark and others) first go out to the bus and taxi lane, turn right for about 80 m and go in near bus stops 18 and 19 to reach the counter.
Branches that pick you up at the permitted-vehicle stops outside
- Board a circulating shuttle: J-Net circles the stop beside the police box about every 15 minutes (it has no counter at the airport). Nico Nico New Chitose Airport, Honda Rent Lease Hokkaido and Sky share a shuttle bus with the marks of all three companies (from 08:45 every 10–15 minutes, about seven minutes to the branch). From 18:00, phone Nico Nico New Chitose Airport.
- Phone on arrival to be collected: at Nico Nico Chitose Shintomi and Chitose Shinano, Family, Mitsubishi (0123-25-8686), One's (shuttle line), North, Hokkaido Kamuy, HM (10–15 minutes to reach you, about 30 when busy) and Carsta Utonai, phone the branch when you land. The waiting stop differs by company. Nico Nico Chitose Shintomi, One's and North split it by flight: stop beside the police box for flights using the south arrivals such as JAL, and stop 30 for flights using the north arrivals such as ANA. HM uses stop 30.
- Wait at a set stop for the shuttle: for HIPs, wait at the stops beside the police box (1–10) or in lane 30 for a vehicle with the company logo. For X Rent-a-Car, the nearest stop from Arrivals Exit 1 is 30, and from Arrivals Exit 5 it is the permitted-vehicle stop beyond stop 1.
- Apply by the day before, or meet a condition: Carsta Rinku Eniwa Megumino needs a phone request by 18:00 the day before and is only for rentals of ¥10,000 or more including tax. Carsta Shirakaba needs contact in advance, and Carsta Utonai's shuttle is only for rentals of 24 hours or more.
Nikku, Car Rental Hokkaido, Hokkaido Travel, Versailles, Amuse and New Chitose Motorland Rentacar (NCML Rentacar) also run free airport shuttles, but confirm where to wait with the branch when you book. At Hokkaido Travel, call the shuttle during opening hours.
Arriving on an international flight
The international terminal also has rental counters on 1F. Besides Nippon, Toyota, Orix, Nissan, Times, Eki Rent-a-Car, Honda Lease Sapporo and Worldnet, the counters include J-Net, HIPs, Mitsubishi and Family. MID also has a counter on 1F of the international terminal (no car handover). For the outdoor stops, One's, North, X Rent-a-Car and HM use stop 98, and Family uses stop 83. For Honda Rent Lease Hokkaido, move to the domestic terminal before boarding the shuttle bus.
Shuttles from many companies come to the same stops. Check the company and branch name before you board. The airport is about 7–20 minutes by car from the branches, and waiting for check-in and the shuttle takes extra time.
Returning the car: work back from winter closing times and the last shuttle
On the way back, return the car to the branch you booked and take the shuttle to the terminal. Every company takes the car back at a branch outside the airport. Set your navigation to the branch's address, not to the airport.
As a guide, return at Times 90 minutes before your flight (120 minutes in long holidays), at Honda Rent Lease Hokkaido about two hours before your flight, and at Worldnet 1.5–2 hours before departure. At some branches the last shuttle goes before closing time. Worldnet's last airport shuttle leaves at 19:00, HM's return shuttle runs until 18:30, and J-Net's shuttle runs until 18:30 from November to March.
Closing times are also earlier in winter. From 1 November, Nippon closes at 21:00, the two Toyota branches and Nissan at 20:00, Orix and J-Net at 19:00, Eki Rent-a-Car and Honda Lease Sapporo Chitose at 18:00, and KUHL at 17:00. Some branches have still shorter hours over New Year: Sky closes at 17:00 from 28 December to 3 January, and Family closes at 13:00 on 31 December and is shut on 1–2 January. Toyota New Chitose Airport Poplar is closed on Tuesday 10 November 2026. If you collect or return that day, you are sent to a nearby branch.
Sky moves to 3-4-1 Ryutsu, Chitose on 5 November 2026. If you return on or after 5 November, enter the new address in your navigation (the shuttle bus stop and phone number do not change). Phones will be down on the morning of Thursday 5 November for the move.
Sapporo stay or Hokkaido road trip: how to rent
If you are staying in central Sapporo on your first night and heading out of town the next day, you can also go to Sapporo first and rent near Sapporo Station. When comparing with renting at the airport, count hotel parking and rental hours you would not use overnight, as well as the train fare. If you are going straight to Furano or elsewhere, collecting the car at the airport makes it easier to get moving.
In the snow season, do not assume from a car's class name that it has winter tyres or 4WD; check that they appear in the conditions of the product you book. At Nissan New Chitose Airport, studless tyres are standard from 16 November 2026 to 30 April 2027. If you are travelling across Hokkaido in one direction, you can also compare returning at another branch. However, Orix's one-way rentals are within Hokkaido only, and its cars cannot be returned to branches on Honshu.
For large groups or a lot of luggage, companies focused on big vehicles are also an option. One's New Chitose Airport mainly rents Hiace, Alphard and microbuses, Carsta Shirakaba rents Alphard, Vellfire and the 10-seat Hiace, X Rent-a-Car rents minivans such as Alphard, and Amuse rents mid-size vehicles such as the Hiace Wagon.
Frequently asked questions
Can I collect the car inside the New Chitose Airport terminal?
No. At New Chitose Airport, every company hands over cars at a branch outside the airport. Companies with a counter check you in there, and those without pick you up from the permitted-vehicle stops outside; either way, a shuttle takes you to the branch.
Can I still rent if I land late in the evening?
The latest closing times are at Nippon (21:00 from November to March, otherwise 22:00) and Carsta Rinku Eniwa Megumino (22:00), and Nikku is open until 21:00. However, Nippon takes no bookings for flights landing outside opening hours, and the airport shuttle at Carsta Rinku Eniwa Megumino needs a request by 18:00 the day before. Nissan offers no service outside hours even if your flight is delayed. North waits if a flight is delayed, but a night charge of ¥2,200 an hour applies outside opening hours. Check that your flight leaves enough time for check-in and the shuttle before closing.
Where do I wait for the shuttle?
It depends on the company. Companies with a counter direct you to the stop after check-in. Most companies without one have you wait at the permitted-vehicle stops beside the police box (1–10), to the left as you leave the arrivals lobby, or at stop 30 to the right. Some split the stops by your arrival exit, so follow your company's instructions. For international flights, One's, North, X Rent-a-Car and HM use stop 98, and Family uses stop 83.
What does a two-day rental cost?
On standard rates before discounts and on a Japanese licence, a compact with basic CDW for two days comes to about ¥17,820–¥20,790 across seven major companies. The lowest is Eki Rent-a-Car at ¥17,820. Among smaller companies, One's is ¥11,000, Carsta ¥11,200, Nico Nico ¥13,420 and J-Net ¥21,450 (Carsta's rate table does not say whether tax is included; One's mainly rents used cars and its rates vary by branch). On a foreign licence, Toyota's base rate is higher; see the price section above. For the 18 companies with no reference price, including local firms, check the amount in each company's booking screen.
Can I return the car to a different branch?
Nippon, the two Toyota branches, Orix, Nissan and Eki Rent-a-Car accept returns to other branches. Orix does so within Hokkaido only. Carsta Rinku Eniwa Megumino accepts one-way returns to its Memanbetsu Airport branch. Nico Nico New Chitose Airport, North and Amuse do not offer one-way rentals.
