Sixteen rental branches at Sapporo Station: how to choose

Sapporo Station has sixteen rental branches from ten companies. Toyota has four, and Nippon, Nissan and Nico Nico have two each. The branches are spread over the north side, the south side and the east side near the Sosei River. You walk to all of them except World Net Rent-a-Car, which collects you.

This page compares each branch's address, hours, walking route and rules on one-way returns, with reference prices and the winter and New Year hours to check.

  • Early pickup or late return: Nippon Sapporo Ekimae opens first and closes last, at 07:00–22:00, with 21:00 closing from 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027 except at New Year. Every other branch opens at 08:00 or later and closes by 20:00.
  • A short walk: Nico Nico North Exit is about 100 m west of the north exit (west concourse). Nissan South Exit Asty is three minutes from the south exit and linked to the station. Orix and Toyota North Exit Departure Counter are three minutes from the north exit.
  • Pick up on the north side, return on the south: Toyota North Exit Departure Counter is departure-only, and you return the car to Toyota Sapporo Station South Exit. It closes at 14:00 except in July and August.
  • Returning at another branch: both Nippon branches, Toyota Ekimae and South Exit, Orix (within Hokkaido), Nissan East Exit, Eki Rent-a-Car and World Net (between its New Chitose, Asahikawa and Hakodate airport branches) handle one-way rentals.
  • A lower base rate: on the Japanese-licence standard rates before discounts, Eki Rent-a-Car is lowest among the large companies at ¥8,470 for a compact car for 24 hours. Nico Nico is ¥5,610, but its CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident.

Branch names link to each branch's own page, where you can see the map and book. The numbers only identify branches and are not a ranking. Some branches change hours for winter and New Year, so read the dates in the hours column.

Toyota, Orix and Nissan lend ETC cards for expressway tolls. Times does not, and some of its cars have no ETC reader. The other company pages do not cover ETC cards, so ask when you book. At Nico Nico, an International Driving Permit (IDP) holder must handle the contract in Japanese without an interpreter or translation app, and acceptance varies by branch.

Reference rates at seven companies

These are compact-car standard rates: regular season, tax included, before discounts, on a Japanese driving licence. The 48-hour total is the first 24 hours, one further day and two days of basic collision damage waiver (CDW). High-season rates and Hokkaido summer and winter rates are not included. Get prices from Honda Rent-a-Lease Sapporo, Honda Rent-a-Lease Hokkaido and World Net when you book.

Company and class First 24 hours Each further 24 hours Basic CDW per day 48 hours with basic CDW Minivan (7–8 seats), 24 hours

Orix SA (Fit, Note 1.2) ¥9,900 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥20,020 ¥22,660

With a foreign licence, Toyota has a separate list: C1 is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each further 24 hours, before optional cover and any Hokkaido seasonal rate. Get a quote for your own licence and dates at the other companies, because these figures are not a visitor quote.

Read the driving licence guide before you book, and the CDW and NOC guide to see what basic cover leaves you paying.

Choose the branch near your station exit

The nearest branch depends on whether you leave by the north exit, the south exit or the east gates. A branch on the same side as your hotel or your next destination saves crossing the station.

  • North exit, west side: Nico Nico North Exit is about 100 m west of the west concourse exit, on floor 9 of the Miyazawa Building at the Kita-6 Nishi-5 junction. Toyota North Exit Departure Counter is three minutes from the north exit, on B1 of the Keio Prelia Hotel Sapporo.
  • North exit, east side: Orix is three minutes (400 m) from the east-side north exit. For Honda Rent-a-Lease Sapporo North Exit, leave the east gates for the north exit, go right, down the stairs and across the signal, walk north, then turn east along the Hokkaido Bank building. Nissan East Exit is seven minutes east of the north exit.
  • East gates, towards the east side: Nippon Sapporo Ekimae is five minutes from the east exit, and Nippon Sapporo Station East is also five minutes. For Toyota Sapporo Ekimae, go from the east gates to the south exit, then left across Soseigawa-dori (six minutes). Eki Rent-a-Car is under the JR viaduct, ten minutes from the east gates.
  • South exit: Nissan South Exit Asty is three minutes away and linked to the station. Toyota South Exit is five minutes west, on the first floor of the Keio Plaza Hotel Sapporo. Honda Rent-a-Lease Hokkaido is five minutes away, on B1 of the ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel Sapporo, and one minute from subway exit 21. For Toyota Subway Sapporo Station, walk south along Ekimae-dori, cross the second signal and turn left. It is at the back of the first floor of the Lawson building.
  • Towards Odori: Times Clock Tower is about ten minutes from the south exit (about five minutes from subway Sapporo exit 22). Nico Nico Kita-1-jo is about ten minutes from Odori subway and Nishi-8-chome tram stops.
  • Collection: when you arrive, phone World Net Sapporo Station. The shuttle meets you outside the Hokkaido Rokin bank, diagonally right from the rightmost north exit (six to seven minutes to the branch). Departure shuttles are only for bookings made on its own site.

"Ekimae" or "East Exit" in a name does not always mean the nearest exit. Nippon Sapporo Ekimae in Kita-7 Higashi-1 and Nippon Sapporo Station East in Kita-4 Higashi-1 are separate branches. Reach Nissan East Exit by walking east from the north exit.

Returning the car: early closings, winter and New Year hours

Watch for early closings. Toyota North Exit Departure Counter closes at 14:00 (17:00 in July and August), Toyota Subway Sapporo Station at 17:00, and Times and both Honda companies at 18:00. Through winter, Nippon Sapporo Ekimae closes at 21:00. Eki Rent-a-Car closes at 18:00 from 1 November to 21 April.

Some branches have closed days. Toyota Ekimae and Toyota Subway Sapporo Station close on Tuesday 10 November 2026, when you can neither rent nor return there. Toyota Ekimae does accept bookings spanning that date. Over New Year, Nippon Sapporo Station East closes at 17:00 on 31 December 2026 and is closed on 1–3 January 2027, with Sapporo Ekimae covering. Toyota Subway Sapporo Station closes from 30 December to 4 January. Toyota South Exit closes at 16:00 from 31 December to 3 January, and both Nissan branches are open 09:00–18:00 on those days.

If you return a car rented elsewhere, choose a branch that accepts it. Toyota North Exit Departure Counter, Toyota Subway Sapporo Station, Nissan Asty and Times do not. From 5 January 2027, Toyota South Exit accepts cars rented elsewhere only from within its area.

Separate city days from days out of Sapporo

Moving from New Chitose Airport into Sapporo and renting after a night in the city can be compared with renting at the airport from your arrival day. Compare the rental and parking costs for days you do not use the car, plus the fare from the airport. If you head out the next morning, plan around opening time and morning crowds. Nippon Sapporo Ekimae is very busy from 07:00 to 10:00, and asks that only the main driver comes to the branch.

In winter, review the driving distance as well as equipment for slippery roads. Check four-wheel drive and winter tyres separately, and plan a route that lets you drop stops in bad weather. Both Nissan branches have studless tyres as standard from 16 November 2026 to 30 April 2027. If you return only at New Chitose Airport on the way home, book for a one-way return and allow for the transfer to the terminal.
