Choosing a rental car in Tokyo

Tokyo has three main places to compare rental branches: Haneda Airport with 11 branches, Tokyo Station with six and Shinagawa Station with four. Together they make 21 branches from 10 companies.

This guide shows which place suits your trip, how each branch handles pickup and return, what each company charges and which branches refuse cars rented elsewhere.

  • Flying into Haneda: Nippon, Toyota, Orix and Nissan take you from a terminal reception counter to a branch outside the airport by shuttle, 15–30 minutes each way. Nico Nico Haneda Airport is directly connected to Terminal 3, so you can walk there without a shuttle.
  • Arriving by Shinkansen at Tokyo or Shinagawa: all six Tokyo Station branches are a 2–5-minute walk from the station. At Shinagawa, the closest are Nissan (3 minutes) and Nippon (5 minutes) on the Konan side, and Toyota (5 minutes) on the Takanawa side.
  • Early or late: Nissan Haneda Airport opens 24 hours, with an airport shuttle from 04:00 to 01:00. Nippon Haneda Airport opens 07:00–22:00, Nissan at Tokyo Station 07:30–21:30, and Nippon Tokyo Station Yaesu South Exit 07:00–21:00.
  • Returning to a different branch: some branches do not accept cars rented elsewhere: both Nippon branches and Toyota Yaesu Exit and Nissan at Tokyo Station, and Nippon at Shinagawa. Name the return branch when you book and confirm it accepts the car.
  • Keeping the cost down: on standard compact rates before discounts for a Japanese licence, Nippon's ¥8,910 for 24 hours is the lowest among the major companies. Toyota applies its Tokyo rate in the 23 wards, ¥10,010 for 24 hours. Near Haneda, One's lists ¥4,400, Carsta ¥4,500 and Nico Nico ¥5,610. Foreign-licence prices and eligibility differ; see the rates section.

Haneda Airport, Tokyo Station and Shinagawa Station compared

Every Haneda rental branch except Nico Nico is outside the airport. With Nippon, Toyota, Orix and Nissan, you check in at a terminal counter and then board a shuttle. With Times, you call from the counter telephone. With Sky and One's, you phone the branch for a pickup. Return Orix and Times cars at least 1 hour 30 minutes before a domestic flight or 3 hours before an international flight. For Sky, allow 2 hours before the flight.

Branches at Tokyo and Shinagawa stations are within walking distance, and some are inside underground car parks. An underground car-park entrance may carry a different name from the branch: Toyota Tokyo Station Nihonbashi Exit's entrance is signed SHANGRILAHOTEL. Read the branch directions before you drive there.

The first table compares the three places. The tables after it list all 21 branches, with each name linking to the company's branch page. Hours are the regular ones; some branches change them over New Year.

CDW and ECO are separate options for the accident excess and non-operation charge.

At Haneda, check in at the lobby reception counter in Terminal 1 or 2, or at the rental reception counter in the Terminal 3 second-floor lobby, then take the shuttle to the branch, 15–30 minutes each way. On busy days the shuttle may leave from Haneda Support Centre, on the Otorii Station side. The branch opens 07:00–22:00.

Tokyo Station Yaesu South Exit is on level B2 of the Yaesu West car park and opens 07:00–21:00. Tokyo Station Marunouchi is on level B2 of the Shin-Marunouchi Building and opens 08:00–18:00, closing from 26 December to 3 January. Shinagawa Ekimae is in Shinagawa Intercity, a 5-minute walk from the Konan Exit. The two Tokyo Station branches and Shinagawa Ekimae do not accept cars rented at other branches.

Taking CDW (the collision damage waiver) does not remove the non-operation charge (NOC). To waive the NOC as well, add ECO. The standard compact rate (N-B) is ¥8,910 for 24 hours.

The Anshin W plan combines the deductible waiver with an NOC waiver.

At Haneda, use the domestic branch's reception counter for Terminals 1 and 2, including ANA international flights, and the international branch's counter for Terminal 3. A free shuttle runs to the branch, 15–25 minutes each way. Both branches open 08:00–20:00; if you land after 20:00, the rental starts the next day. You cannot return the car at the airport itself, only at the branch.

Tokyo Station has Yaesu Exit (about 3 minutes from the Yaesu Central Exit) and Nihonbashi Exit (2 minutes from the Nihonbashi Exit). Shinagawa has Takanawa Exit (5 minutes). The Nihonbashi Exit car-park entrance is signed SHANGRILAHOTEL and has no Toyota sign.

All five are in the 23 wards, so the Tokyo rate applies: C1 compact at ¥10,010 for 24 hours and ¥8,800 for each further day on a Japanese licence. The Anshin W Plan waives the NOC and covers repair or replacement of a punctured tyre.

At Haneda, check in at the counter in Terminal 1 (JAL) or Terminal 2 (ANA), or at the general rental counter in Terminal 3, then take the free shuttle to the branch beside Tenkubashi Station, about 15 minutes. The shuttle runs 08:00–21:00 and the branch opens 08:00–22:00.

Tokyo Station Yaesu Exit is in the Yaesu underground mall, and cars go in and out through the Tokyo Station Yaesu Parking East car park. It can queue from 10:00 to 16:00. Shinagawa Station Konan Exit Counter is 10 minutes' walk from the Konan Exit, and you both collect and return the car there.

One-way rentals are available except in Hokkaido, Okinawa and on outlying islands, and not for large vehicles. The Rental Anshin Pack (RAP) waives the NOC and covers puncture repair or tyre costs up to ¥20,000. The standard compact rate (SA) is ¥9,900 for 24 hours.

Coverage
The deductible waiver, Plus and Perfect plans have different coverage scopes.

The Haneda Airport branch is on the first floor of Haneda Airport Garden, directly connected to Terminal 3, so no shuttle is needed. From Terminals 1 and 2, take the free connecting bus to Terminal 3. It opens 09:00–20:00, having extended its closing time to 20:00 on 1 July 2026. Cash and debit cards are not accepted.

The branch details do not mention one-way rentals, and the company generally does not accept them. The S class is ¥5,610 for 24 hours and ¥5,610 for each further day. Basic CDW (¥1,100 a day) leaves the vehicle excess after a single-car accident; Perfect cover is the option that removes it. Foreign-licence renters must complete the contract in Japanese, and acceptance varies by branch.

Toyota (C1) ¥10,010 ¥8,800 ¥1,100 ¥21,010 ¥23,650 —

On a foreign licence, Toyota uses a separate rate list: on its Tokyo rate, C1 is ¥11,990 for the first 24 hours and ¥10,560 for each additional 24 hours, against ¥10,010 and ¥8,800 in the table. Outside the Tokyo rate, C1 on a foreign licence is ¥10,340 and ¥8,690. To rent on a foreign licence, bring an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention and your passport, or, for licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco or Taiwan, the licence with a Japanese translation and your passport.

Nico Nico requires the renter to complete the contract in Japanese, without an interpreter or translation app, and some branches do not accept an IDP.

Shuto Expressway and other tolls are extra. One's adds ¥1,100 per 24 hours when you depart on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday. Discounts and peak-season tables change the final price, so compare the same dates, class and cover in the booking.

The cover names and prices that remove the NOC are compared in CDW and NOC.

Pickup and return in Tokyo

Returning at Haneda before a flight

All Haneda branches are outside the airport, and except at Nico Nico you ride a shuttle back after returning the car. Both Toyota branches take returns only at the branch, not at the airport.

Returning at Tokyo and Shinagawa stations

Enter the branch's return MAPCODE in the navigation system. The two Nippon branches at Tokyo Station and Shinagawa Ekimae do not accept cars rented elsewhere, so check the return branch even within the same company. Returns at Orix Tokyo Station Yaesu Exit can take longer from 10:00 to 16:00, when the car park is busy.

Closed days

Nissan Shinagawa Station Konan Exit closes on 15 November 2026, Nippon Shinagawa Ekimae on 1 January 2027, and Nippon Tokyo Station Marunouchi from 26 December to 3 January.

Frequently asked questions

Should I rent at Haneda or Tokyo Station?

Haneda suits you if you land there and head straight for Boso or Hakone. Tokyo or Shinagawa suits a Shinkansen arrival, or a trip that starts after a night in the city. Hotel parking in central Tokyo is often expensive, so add the rental charge for days you will not drive to the parking fee when you compare.

Can I rent at any time of day?

Nissan Haneda Airport opens 24 hours, with an airport shuttle from 04:00 to 01:00. Tokyo and Shinagawa stations have no 24-hour branch.

Which company has the lowest rate?

On standard compact rates before discounts for a Japanese licence, One's at ¥4,400 and Carsta at ¥4,500 are lowest; both are near Haneda and reached by shuttle. Nico Nico follows at ¥5,610, and Nippon is lowest among the major companies at ¥8,910. Member and online discounts change the actual price, so narrow your choice to two or three companies and compare them in the booking.

Why are Toyota's rates higher in Tokyo?

Toyota uses a Tokyo rate in the 23 wards, on Oshima and at Narita Airport. C1 compact is ¥10,010 for 24 hours against ¥8,580 elsewhere in Japan, on a Japanese licence.
