Eleven rental branches at Haneda Airport: how to choose

Haneda Airport, in Ota-ku on the southern edge of Tokyo, has 11 rental branches from 10 companies. You cannot collect a car inside a terminal, and the only branch you can walk to is Nico Nico, in Haneda Airport Garden, which connects directly to Terminal 3. The other branches are in Ota-ku or Kawasaki. You either check in at a terminal counter and take a shuttle, or call for a pickup after you land.

This page compares the counters and pickup points at each terminal, closing times, returns and one-way rentals, and the reference price at each company.

  • Arriving at night or leaving early: Nissan Haneda Airport opens 24 hours, and its airport shuttle runs from 04:00 to 01:00 the next morning. Nippon and Orix open until 22:00, with shuttles until 21:30 at Nippon and 21:00 at Orix. If you land after 20:00, Toyota directs you to collect the car the next day.
  • Walking instead of waiting for a shuttle: Nico Nico Haneda Airport is a short walk along the connecting walkway from the Terminal 3 arrivals lobby. From Terminals 1 and 2, take the free connecting bus to Terminal 3 first.
  • Choosing by arrival terminal: at Toyota, use the Domestic branch for Terminals 1 and 2 (including ANA international flights) and the International branch for Terminal 3.
  • Returning somewhere else: Nippon, both Toyota branches, Orix and Nissan allow returns between their branches. Times Haneda accepts cars rented at other branches, except tall and long cars.
  • Keeping the cost down: on standard rates before discounts, Sky is the cheapest of the larger companies at ¥8,800 for a compact for 24 hours on a Japanese licence. Among smaller companies, One's is ¥4,400, Carsta ¥4,500 and Nico Nico ¥5,610. Both Toyota branches are in Tokyo's 23 wards, so they charge Toyota's Tokyo rate of ¥10,010.

Reference prices: standard rates at nine companies

This table takes each company's standard rate for a compact car, with the total including basic collision damage waiver (CDW). The total changes with the number of days and the cover you choose. These are regular-season, tax-inclusive rates before discounts on a Japanese licence, unless a row says otherwise. Both Toyota branches are in Tokyo's 23 wards, so Toyota's Tokyo rate applies: ¥10,010 for a compact for the first 24 hours and ¥8,800 for each further 24 hours on a Japanese licence. For Rent-a-Car Tatsujin, get the price from its booking form.

Company and class First 24 hours Additional day Basic CDW per day 48 hours with basic CDW Minivan (7–8 seats), 24 hours
One's M (Vitz, Fit, Note). Mainly used cars; rates vary by branch ¥4,400 ¥4,400 ¥1,100 ¥11,000 ¥9,350
Carsta compact (Mazda2, Vitz). The rate table does not say whether tax is included ¥4,500 ¥4,500 ¥1,100 ¥11,200 ¥11,500
Nico Nico S (Aqua, Yaris, Roomy). Basic CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident ¥5,610 ¥5,610 ¥1,100 ¥13,420 ¥15,180
Sky S (Yaris, Fit) ¥8,800 ¥7,480 ¥1,100 ¥18,480 ¥22,000
Times C-1 (Mazda2, Note e-POWER) ¥8,855 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥18,975 ¥22,770

Toyota C1 (Yaris, Passo) ¥10,010 ¥8,800 ¥1,100 ¥21,010 ¥23,650
  • The 48-hour total is the first 24 hours, one additional day and two days of basic CDW. A dash means the company's rate table does not list that fee. Where basic CDW shows "Included", the rate already contains it. Extra hours, fuel, one-way fees and options such as child seats are not included.
  • Most companies offer member or online discounts, so the booking screen is often cheaper than this table. Peak periods such as Golden Week, Obon and New Year cost more. Enter your dates and class for the actual price.
  • One's uses mainly used cars and charges the same for compact and kei cars. Without road-service cover (¥880 a day), road service costs ¥27,500 per call. Rates vary by branch; M class at Kanazawa Station East Exit is ¥4,700 for 24 hours.
  • Carsta's rate table does not say whether tax is included. From the second day the charge is ¥2,250 per 12 hours, and new and hybrid cars cost 30% more.
  • Nico Nico's basic CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident.
  • Sky's basic CDW varies by region: ¥1,320 in Hokkaido, ¥1,100 in Honshu and Shikoku, ¥1,430 in Kyushu and ¥1,650 in Okinawa. Members and prepayment each get 5% off.
  • Times has member rates of up to 20% off.
  • Nippon has a separate member rate table.
  • Nissan's basic CDW is calculated on the Standard Plan at ¥1,650 a day.
  • Orix has member discounts and a 5% web discount.
  • Toyota has member discounts of 10% and 20%. Branches in the 23 wards of Tokyo, Oshima and Narita Airport use the Tokyo rate.

Prices differ by licence. The table uses the Japanese-licence rate. On a foreign licence, Toyota C1 is ¥11,990 for the first 24 hours and ¥10,560 for each additional 24 hours at the Tokyo rate, which Toyota applies in the 23 wards, before optional cover; the Toyota row above uses the separate Japanese-licence rates of ¥10,010 and ¥8,800. The other companies in the table publish no separate foreign-licence rate here, so get a quote for your own licence.

A foreign licence needs the original licence, a 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit (or an official Japanese translation for licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan) and your passport. See driving in Japan on a foreign licence. Nico Nico accepts an International Driving Permit only at some branches, requires the renter to complete the contract in Japanese without an interpreter or translation app, and asks for an address in Japan and a phone number that can take calls. Sky rents on a Geneva Convention permit with a passport, or on a foreign licence with a Japanese translation and a passport.

From arrival to the counter: check-in and pickup by terminal

Haneda has three terminals, numbered 1, 2 and 3, and both the counters and the pickup points differ between them. Before you travel, check that your branch has check-in at your arrival terminal.

Arriving at Terminal 1 or 2

The counters for Toyota (Domestic branch), Nippon, Orix, Times and Nissan are in the 1F arrivals lobby.

  • Check in at the counter, then take a shuttle: Toyota Domestic (at Terminal 1, beside Exit 6 of the north wing arrivals; at Terminal 2, in front of Arrival Exits 4, 5 and 6. About 20 minutes to the branch from Terminal 1 and about 25 minutes from Terminal 2, and you may wait about 20 minutes after check-in); Nippon (15–30 minutes to the branch); Orix (the JAL counter at Terminal 1 and the ANA counter at Terminal 2; about 15 minutes); and Nissan (at Terminal 1, the south wing beside Arrival Exits 3 and 4; at Terminal 2, opposite Arrival Exits 2 and 3; about 15 minutes).
  • Call from the counter: the Times counters (Terminal 1, at the south end of the south wing meeting plaza; Terminal 2, on the south side of Meeting Plaza 2) are unstaffed. Use the direct phone there and a shuttle bus takes you to the Haneda branch (about 20–40 minutes; it does not run to match bookings). At Nissan, if no staff are at the counter, take a ticket from the machine and call on the direct phone or your own.
  • Wait in the 2F departures lobby: call Sky after landing and it collects you near Exit 6 of the 2F departures lobby at Terminal 1 or near Exit 3 at Terminal 2 (about 15 minutes to the branch). The shuttle cannot be booked and runs in order of arrival.
  • Move to Terminal 3 and walk: for Nico Nico, take the free connecting bus (stop 8 at Terminal 1, stop 9 at Terminal 2) to Terminal 3 and walk to 1F of Haneda Airport Garden.

Arriving at Terminal 3

There is a shared rental counter in the 2F arrivals lobby. Check in there, then take a shuttle to the branch.

  • Check in at the counter, then take a shuttle: Toyota International (the general travel counter beyond the arrival exit; about 15 minutes to the branch, and you may wait 15–30 minutes after check-in), Nippon, Orix and Nissan (the general travel counter opposite the 2F arrival exit, open 08:00–20:00; outside those hours, call the branch directly. Its shuttle comes to the rental waiting area on 1F of multi-storey car park P5).
  • Wait in front of car park P5: call Sky after landing and it collects you at the 1F waiting room in front of P5.
  • Walk: for Nico Nico, leave the arrivals lobby (2F), go straight on, enter Haneda Airport Garden by the connecting walkway and take the lift to 1F. It is also straight ahead from Haneda Airport Terminal 3 Station on the Keikyu and Tokyo Monorail lines.

Toyota's Domestic branch also serves ANA international flights arriving at Terminal 2. Do not choose by the word "International" in the branch name; book by your arrival terminal number. The shared counter at Terminal 3 also shows the Times name, but Times' branch page directs customers only to its Terminal 1 and 2 counters. If you land at Terminal 3, confirm where to check in when you book.

Branches where you arrange the pickup when you book

  • One's: phone the branch to book the shuttle, and confirm the pickup point at the same time. The branch is in Omori-minami, Ota-ku.
  • Carsta Haneda Airport Kawasaki Tonomachi: book through LINE, then tell the branch how you will collect the car, on its official LINE account or the form it sends, before you board your flight.
  • Rent-a-Car Tatsujin: instead of a shuttle, it delivers the car you booked to the airport, free of charge. Confirm the handover place and time when you book.

Returning the car: back to the branch, then a shuttle to the terminal

On your way home, return the car to the branch you booked and take the shuttle to the terminal. Toyota and Times do not accept returns at the airport. Set your navigation to the branch, not the airport. Toyota's return MAPCODE is 164766*72 for the Domestic branch and 164579*66 for the International branch.

Return deadlines differ by company. Orix and Times ask for 1 hour 30 minutes before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international flight, Nissan for about 2 hours before departure, and Sky suggests 2 hours. The last shuttle is at 21:30 at Nippon and 21:00 at Orix. At Times it is at 18:30 from Monday to Thursday and 19:30 on Fridays, weekends, public holidays and the day before a holiday. Times closes at 19:00 from Monday to Thursday.

During long weekends, Golden Week, Obon and New Year, roads inside the airport are congested and shuttles take longer. Nippon may also ask you to travel between the airport and the branch by taxi or train, depending on its shuttles. Refuel on the way to the branch so you are not rushed.

Separate your central Tokyo days from your days outside the city

If you are staying in central Tokyo first, you can compare taking the train to your hotel and renting near Shinagawa Station or Tokyo Station the next day. Add up the rental charge and parking while you are in the city, plus the fare from the airport, and compare that with renting only on the days you need the car. Nippon says its Haneda branch can be hard to book at some times of year and also suggests its Keikyu Kawasaki Station, Tsurumi Station and Yokohama Station West Exit branches.

If you are heading straight out of the city, you can load your luggage and leave without returning to central Tokyo. On your return day, allow for the drive from the expressway exit to the branch and the shuttle back to the terminal.

Frequently asked questions

Which rental branch can I walk to from Haneda Airport?

Only Nico Nico Haneda Airport. It is on 1F of Haneda Airport Garden, which connects directly to Terminal 3, and it has no shuttle. From Terminals 1 and 2, take the free connecting bus to Terminal 3 and walk from there. The other branches are outside the airport, and you reach them by shuttle or have the car delivered.

Can I still rent if I land late at night?

Nissan Haneda Airport opens 24 hours, and its airport shuttle runs from 04:00 to 01:00 the next morning. The Terminal 3 general travel counter closes at 20:00, so after that, call the branch directly. Nippon (shuttle until 21:30) and Orix (shuttle until 21:00; for a 21:00–22:00 start, contact the branch directly) also open until 22:00. If you land after 20:00, Toyota directs you to collect the car the next day.

Which Toyota branch do I use if I arrive on an international flight?

Use the International branch if you land at Terminal 3, and the Domestic branch if you land at Terminal 1 or 2. ANA international flights arriving at Terminal 2 use the Domestic branch.

How long does the shuttle take?

The published times are about 15 minutes at Orix, Nissan, Sky and Toyota International; about 20 minutes from Terminal 1 and about 25 minutes from Terminal 2 at Toyota Domestic; 15–30 minutes at Nippon; and 20–40 minutes at Times. These do not include check-in or waiting for the shuttle.

What does a two-day rental cost?

On standard rates before discounts on a Japanese licence, a compact with basic CDW for two days comes to ¥18,260–¥21,010 at the six larger companies. Nippon is lowest at ¥18,260, and both Toyota branches are ¥21,010 because of the Tokyo rate. On a foreign licence, Toyota's base rate is higher; see the price section above. Among smaller companies, One's is ¥11,000, Carsta ¥11,200 and Nico Nico ¥13,420 (Carsta's rate table does not say whether tax is included). At One's Haneda Airport, departures on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays add ¥1,100 per 24 hours. For Rent-a-Car Tatsujin, get the price from its booking form.
