Four rental branches at Shinagawa Station: how to choose

Shinagawa Station has four rental branches from four companies. Nippon, Nissan and Orix are on the Konan (east) side, and Toyota is on the Takanawa (west) side. You walk to all of them, and none runs a shuttle.

This page compares each branch's address, hours, walking route and rules on one-way returns, with reference prices and how to drive back in.

  • Evening return: Nissan is open until 22:00 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, and until 20:00 from Monday to Thursday. The other three close at 20:00 every day.
  • A short walk: Nissan is three minutes from the Konan Exit, Nippon five minutes from the Konan Exit and Toyota five minutes from the Takanawa Exit. Orix is ten minutes from the Konan Exit.
  • Returning at another branch: Toyota, Orix and Nissan handle returns between branches. Nippon does not accept cars rented elsewhere.
  • A lower base rate: on the Japanese-licence standard rates before discounts, Nippon is lowest at ¥8,910 for a compact car for 24 hours. Toyota charges its Tokyo rate of ¥10,010, because the branch is in the 23 wards.
  • Closed days: Nissan closes on 15 November 2026 (the third Sunday of November) and from 31 December to 3 January. Nippon closes on 1 January 2027. Toyota has no closed days.

Branch names link to each branch's own page, where you can see the map and book. The numbers only identify branches and are not a ranking.

Reference rates at four companies

These are compact-car standard rates: regular season, tax included, before discounts, on a Japanese driving licence. The 48-hour total is the first 24 hours, one further day and two days of basic collision damage waiver (CDW). Toyota Shinagawa Takanawa uses Toyota's Tokyo rate.

Company and class First 24 hours Each further 24 hours Basic CDW per day 48 hours with basic CDW Minivan (7–8 seats), 24 hours
Nippon N-B (Fit, Corolla) ¥8,910 ¥7,150 ¥1,100 ¥18,260 ¥22,550
Nissan P2 (March, Note) ¥9,790 ¥7,700 ¥1,650 ¥20,790 ¥24,090
Orix SA (Fit, Note 1.2) ¥9,900 ¥7,920 ¥1,100 ¥20,020 ¥22,660
Toyota C1 (Yaris, Passo) ¥10,010 ¥8,800 ¥1,100 ¥21,010 ¥23,650

With a foreign licence, Toyota has a separate list. In the 23 wards, C1 is ¥11,990 for the first 24 hours and ¥10,560 for each further 24 hours, before optional cover. Get a quote for your own licence and dates at the other companies, because these figures are not a visitor quote.

Read the driving licence guide before you book, and the CDW and NOC guide to see what basic cover leaves you paying.

Choose the branch near your station exit

The Konan (east) and Takanawa (west) exits open onto different parts of the city. A branch on the same side as your hotel or your next destination saves crossing the station concourse.

  • Konan Exit, Nissan (3 min): turn right out of the exit, stay off the stairs ahead and cross the Skyway. Walk straight with Shinagawa East One Tower on your right. Past the black sign pillar, turn right and take the escalator down one floor. Go left through the automatic door, with a Lawson on your right, to the first floor of Shinagawa Grand Central Tower.
  • Konan Exit, Nippon (5 min): leave the exit and enter the oval building ahead to your right (Shinagawa Intercity A). Go down to the first floor and step into the connected S&R Building. The branch is immediately on your left.
  • Konan Exit, Orix (10 min): the counter is on the first floor of A-PLACE Shinagawa Higashi in Konan 1-chome, 579 m from the station. It belongs to the Tennozu Isle branch, but you collect and return the car here.
  • Takanawa Exit, Toyota (5 min): walk from the Takanawa Exit towards Tamachi. The branch is behind Lexus.

The name "Ekimae" (in front of the station) does not tell you which exit to use. Nippon Shinagawa Ekimae is inside Intercity on the Konan side.

Returning the car: entrances and accepted vehicles

Some branches have separate walking and driving entrances. Nippon's car return is entered from the Intercity A side, using return MAPCODE 434 734*27. To reach Toyota Takanawa by car, turn off Daiichi-Keihin south of Resona Bank, then turn right into the one-way road just before the Prince Hotel.

If you return a car rented elsewhere, check the branch and the car size first. Nippon does not accept these cars. Orix excludes vehicles 155 cm or taller, G class and above, and WA class and above (such as Serena) from one-way rentals. Nissan's car-park height limit rules out W5, T4–T6 and M1 classes, for both pickup and return.

Nippon, Toyota and Orix close at 20:00 every day. Nissan closes at 20:00 from Monday to Thursday and at 22:00 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. If you are catching a Shinkansen, allow time for refuelling, the return paperwork and the walk to the gates.

Compare renting after a Shinkansen arrival

Coming to Shinagawa by rail and driving out from there can be compared with driving the whole way or with renting at Haneda Airport. Changing where you start driving can cut airport transfers and time spent with a parked car in central Tokyo, though it adds rail fares and carrying luggage.

If you rent on the last day of a Tokyo stay and head for another region, a return at another branch is an option. Consider the terms for returning at Shinagawa separately from those for renting at Shinagawa and returning elsewhere. Select both branches when you book, and compare totals including the fee.
