A foreign licence needs the original licence, a 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit (or an official Japanese translation for licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan) and your passport. See driving in Japan on a foreign licence. Nico Nico accepts an International Driving Permit only at some branches, requires the renter to complete the contract in Japanese without an interpreter or translation app, and asks for an address in Japan and a phone number that can take calls. Sky rents on a Geneva Convention permit with a passport, or on a foreign licence with a Japanese translation and a passport. Carsta Miyakojima Hirara-Shimozato does not rent on an International Driving Permit.

From arrival to the shuttle

Shuttles at Miyako Airport work in three ways, depending on the company.

  • Staff wait in the arrivals lobby: Nippon (the arrivals lobby door), Toyota (in the airport lobby), Orix (staff holding a sign), Nissan (the arrival exit), Sky (staff with a board), J-Net (outside the arrivals lobby), Luana, You-I, Miyakojima Air, Akara and others. Waiting times change if your flight is delayed, so put your flight number on the booking.
  • Phone after you land: Nico Nico (wait in the rental shuttle car park at the far left of the car park), One's (book the shuttle by 19:00 the day before), Daikichi, 24 Rent-a-Car, Miyakojima Airport Rent-a-Car and others.
  • Taxi instead of a shuttle: Universe refunds the taxi fare from the airport to the branch (receipt needed).

Miyako Airport has no jumbo-taxi rank, so for five or more people renting at Universe, only a representative goes to the branch.

Returning: check the last shuttle and Shimojishima Airport

After you return the car, each company's shuttle takes you to Miyako Airport. Times asks for 1 hour 30 minutes before your flight, and Universe for 90 minutes before departure. The last shuttle to the airport at You-I and Luana is at 17:45, and Luana's returns end at 18:00. Some companies charge for returns outside hours (¥3,300 at Luana, for 08:00–09:00 and 18:00–19:00).

If your flight home leaves from Miyako Shimojishima Airport, check when you book whether you can be taken there. Akara charges ¥2,000 each way, and Miyakojima Air, Miyakojima YRC, I-mobi and PaniPani are free. Pine also has a branch inside the Shimojishima Airport terminal.

One-way rentals on the island are available at Toyota (island only), Orix (Miyakojima only), Luana (Miyakojima branch only, ¥1,000–¥4,000 by distance) and 51 Rent-a-Car (between its branches). Nippon Miyako Airport-mae does not accept cars rented elsewhere.

Choose the car by luggage and parking for driving on the island

If you are moving between hotels around the island, allow room for suitcases and beach gear as well as people. A car filled to its seat count may not have enough luggage space, so check the luggage guidance for each class. Compare your hotels' parking conditions too.

On your flight home day, plan your last stop, refuelling, the return and the shuttle to the airport as one sequence. Strong wind or weather can change your plans, so do not pack outdoor plans in until the last minute, and save the phone number of your branch. Toyota Miyakojima Airport is due to move on 15 July 2027 (departures up to 14 July 2027 use the present branch).

Miyako Airport rental car FAQ

Which branches can I walk to from Miyako Airport?

Times Miyako Airport is about 7 minutes on foot, and Nico Nico Miyako Airport about 10 minutes. The other branches are about 2–10 minutes by car, and you reach them by shuttle.

Will they collect me at Shimojishima Airport?

It depends on the company. Times, Sky, You-I and One's do not run transfers to Shimojishima Airport. Miyakojima Air, Miyakojima YRC, I-mobi and PaniPani are free, and Akara charges ¥2,000 each way.

What does one night and two days cost?

On standard rates before discounts and a Japanese licence, a full two days (48 hours) with basic CDW is about ¥18,040 at Toyota and Budget, ¥18,260 at Nippon, ¥18,975 at Times, ¥19,580 at Sky, ¥20,020 at Orix, ¥20,790 at Nissan, ¥11,000 at One's, ¥11,200 at Carsta and ¥13,420 at Nico Nico. Luana counts by calendar day with a two-day minimum, and a compact at its Miyakojima branch is ¥14,000 (regular season, cover included). On a foreign licence, Toyota's base rate is higher; see the price section above.

Can I still rent on a late flight?

Even the latest branches close at 20:00. At some companies the last shuttle is earlier than closing time (17:45 at You-I and Luana), so on a late flight, check shuttle times when you book.
