Naha, the capital of Okinawa, has 42 rental branches from 21 companies. Many are within walking distance of a Yui Rail monorail station. At DFS Okinawa Naha (formerly T Galleria Okinawa) at Omoromachi Station, Nippon, Toyota, Orix, Sky and Nissan have counters side by side. Nico Nico alone has 15 branches in the city.

Walking from a station: Nico Nico Kokusai-dori Saion Square connects directly to Makishi Station, Nippon Kenchomae is in Palette Kumoji in front of Kenchomae Station, and Orix Miebashi Station-mae and Carsta Naha Miebashi Station-mae are 1 minute on foot from Miebashi Station.
Early or late: Nico Nico Naha Nishi 2-chome opens earliest, at 07:00. Nico Nico Naha Shintoshin, Naha Kagamibaru and Naha Omoromachi Station close latest, at 21:00.
Returning at the airport: Nippon, Toyota and Orix allow returns at other branches. Fuji only takes returns at its Okinawa City branch and has no airport one-way. Nippon Kenchomae and Times do not accept cars rented elsewhere.
Keeping the cost down: on standard rates before discounts on a Japanese licence, Toyota is the cheapest major company at ¥8,580 for a compact for 24 hours. Carsta (¥4,500), Nico Nico (¥5,610) and Fuji (¥6,900 for one night and two days, including basic CDW) also have branches in the city.
Renting from the port: near Tomarin at Tomari Port are Nico Nico Naha Maejima (opposite the ferry terminal) and Okini Rent-a-Car (1 minute on foot from Tomari Port). Orix has a reception counter inside Tomarin.

Reference prices: standard rates at 10 companies

This table takes each company's standard rate for a compact car, with the total including basic collision damage waiver (CDW). In Okinawa some companies charge by the hour, and local companies set a one-night-two-day price, some including basic CDW. Sky's basic CDW is ¥1,650 a day in Okinawa. The total changes with the number of days and the cover you choose. These are rates before discounts on a Japanese licence, unless a row says otherwise.

The 48-hour total is the first 24 hours, one additional day and two days of basic CDW. A dash means the company's rate table does not list that fee. Where basic CDW shows "Included", the rate already contains it. Extra hours, fuel, one-way fees and options such as child seats are not included.
Most companies offer member or online discounts, so the booking screen is often cheaper than this table. Peak periods such as Golden Week, Obon and New Year cost more. Enter your dates and class for the actual price.
Carsta's rate table does not say whether tax is included. From the second day the charge is ¥2,250 per 12 hours, and new and hybrid cars cost 30% more.
Nico Nico's basic CDW does not waive the vehicle excess after a single-car accident.
Fuji charges by calendar day. The 24-hour figure is the one-night-two-day rate at its Naha branch, ¥6,900 (a same-day rental is ¥4,100, and from two nights and three days you add ¥2,900 a day). All plans include basic CDW, and the site's title says prices include consumption tax.
Fuji's Yaris and eight-seat wagon (Voxy, Delica D5) plans are for rental and return at its Naha branch only. At its Ishigaki branch the Yaris is ¥7,600 for one night and two days, then ¥3,700 a day.
Fuji's basic CDW does not waive the NOC (¥20,000 if the car can be driven, ¥50,000 if not). Its Anshin cover, ¥800 a day, waives the NOC.
Toyota has member discounts of 10% and 20%.
Sky's basic CDW varies by region: ¥1,320 in Hokkaido, ¥1,100 in Honshu and Shikoku, ¥1,430 in Kyushu and ¥1,650 in Okinawa. Members and prepayment each get 5% off.
Times has member rates of up to 20% off.
Nippon has a separate member rate table.
Nissan's basic CDW is calculated on the Standard Plan at ¥1,650 a day.
Orix has member discounts and a 5% web discount.
Holiday's rate table has only an off-season and a top-season tier. The 24-hour figure is the off-season one-night-two-day rate, ¥13,200; the top-season rate is ¥27,500. The page does not give the season dates.
All Holiday plans include basic CDW and NOC cover, and tax. In the off season, each day from two nights and three days up to four nights and five days adds ¥5,100, and longer rentals add ¥6,600 a day.
Holiday's minivan (Noah, Step Wagon; seven seats) is ¥17,050 for one night and two days in the off season and ¥53,400 in the top season. It does not rent kei and compact cars to drivers with under six months' licence history, or other cars to drivers with under two years.

Prices differ by licence. The table uses the Japanese-licence rate. On a foreign licence, Toyota C1 is ¥10,340 for the first 24 hours and ¥8,690 for each additional 24 hours, before optional cover; the Toyota row above uses the separate Japanese-licence rates of ¥8,580 and ¥7,260. The other companies in the table publish no separate foreign-licence rate here, so get a quote for your own licence.

A foreign licence needs the original licence, a 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit (or an official Japanese translation for licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan) and your passport. See driving in Japan on a foreign licence. Nico Nico accepts an International Driving Permit only at some branches, requires the renter to complete the contract in Japanese without an interpreter or translation app, and asks for an address in Japan and a phone number that can take calls. Sky rents on a Geneva Convention permit with a passport, or on a foreign licence with a Japanese translation and a passport. Carsta Naha Miebashi Station-mae handles rentals in Japanese only.

Choosing a branch near your station or hotel

Branches in Naha fall into these groups by Yui Rail station.

Omoromachi Station: Nippon, Toyota, Orix, Sky and Nissan have counters side by side on 2F of DFS Okinawa Naha, reached by the 2F walkway from the station. DFS opens at 10:00, but the 2F main entrance used by Nippon opens at 09:00. Nico Nico Naha Omoromachi Station is about 2 minutes on foot from the station.
Kenchomae and Asahibashi stations: Nippon Kenchomae (in Palette Kumoji), Sky Naha (5 minutes on foot from Kenchomae Station), Orix Asahibashi Station West (5 minutes on foot from Asahibashi Station), Nico Nico Naha Izumizaki (about 5 minutes on foot from Asahibashi Station) and others.
Miebashi and Makishi stations: Orix Miebashi Station-mae (1 minute on foot), Carsta Naha Miebashi Station-mae (1 minute on foot, with reception on 4F of the building), Times Miebashi Station-mae (about 3 minutes on foot) and Nico Nico Kokusai-dori Saion Square (directly linked to Makishi Station).
Onoyama-koen and Furujima stations: Nico Nico Naha Kagamibaru and Naha Onoyama-koen Station (3–5 minutes on foot from Onoyama-koen Station), Harebare (3 minutes on foot from Onoyama-koen Station) and Nico Nico Naha Shintoshin (about 5 minutes on foot from Furujima Station).

Branches near the airport (Holiday, Mix, Fuji, Flight, Leqios, Apple and others) run shuttles from Naha Airport, rather than being places to walk to from a city hotel. Toyota Aja is under the Route 58 flyover and has no shuttle.

Returning: check the building entrance and closing time

Return to Nippon Kenchomae at the car park entrance behind the Palette Kumoji building; you cannot enter from the opposite lane. For the DFS branches, check the return entrance in each company's information (Sky publishes a guide to its return entrance). Toyota Omoromachi Station-mae DFS Okinawa Naha does not handle W4, BUS, V or T class cars.

Orix, Sky, Nissan and Nippon Omoromachi Station-mae close at 19:00, and the Toyota DFS branch and Times at 18:00. To return at the airport, name the same company's airport branch as your return branch, and allow for that branch's closing time and the shuttle to the airport.

Renting the day after your Naha stay and heading north

If you spend your arrival day around Kokusai-dori and head north the next day, you can rent at a city branch the next morning. Compare whether this saves on the rental charge for the unused night and hotel parking, even with the fare from the airport to your hotel. It is not always cheaper, so get quotes for the same model and cover.

To return at an airport branch on the way home, drive to that branch and take the company's shuttle to the terminal. Whether you can rent in the city and return at the airport depends on the company and branch.

Which branches can I walk to from a station?

Nico Nico Kokusai-dori Saion Square connects directly to Makishi Station, Nippon Kenchomae is in front of Kenchomae Station, and Orix Miebashi Station-mae and Carsta Naha Miebashi Station-mae are 1 minute on foot from Miebashi Station. Five companies also have counters inside DFS at Omoromachi Station.

If DFS opens at 10:00, can I still rent at 09:00?

Yes. Nippon Omoromachi Station-mae can be reached through the 2F main entrance from 09:00, before DFS opens. Toyota, Orix, Sky and Nissan also open at 09:00.

Can I rent in Naha City and return at Naha Airport?

Nippon, Toyota and Orix allow returns at other branches. Nippon Kenchomae and Times Miebashi Station-mae do not accept cars rented elsewhere; whether you can rent there and return elsewhere should be confirmed when you book.

What does one night and two days cost?

On standard rates before discounts and a Japanese licence, a full two days (48 hours) with basic CDW is about ¥18,040 at Toyota, ¥18,260 at Nippon, ¥18,975 at Times, ¥19,580 at Sky, ¥20,020 at Orix and ¥20,790 at Nissan. Carsta is ¥11,200 and Nico Nico ¥13,420. Fuji counts by calendar day, so its guide is the ¥6,900 one-night-two-day rate, including basic CDW. Summer and long holidays cost more.
