JDM Car Rental in Tokyo: 7 Places to Drive a Skyline GT-R or Supra Yourself

You can drive a Skyline GT-R, a Supra or a Civic Type R yourself in Tokyo, but the companies that offer it sell very different things. Some hand you the keys for a day. Others put you behind a guide car on a fixed route. Pickup ranges from Shibuya to Matsudo in Chiba. The lowest published day rate for a real R34 GT-R is ¥53,800, a 23-hour rental of one in central Shibuya is ¥120,000, and guided drives in one are priced from ¥106,000 to ¥150,000.

Below are seven companies with English booking pages that let visitors with an International Driving Permit drive a Japanese performance car in or near Tokyo. They are listed by type, not ranked. The prices and conditions are those shown on each company's official pages on 23 September 2026. Prices change, so confirm on the booking page before you pay.

How to choose a JDM rental in Tokyo

Five things separate the companies below. The comparison table and the company cards use the same terms.

1. Rental or lead-car tour. With a self-drive rental you choose your own roads. With a lead-car tour you drive behind a guide car on a fixed route, often to Daikoku PA. Both need a valid IDP or translation, because you are driving. If you mainly want to see Daikoku PA at night with someone who knows the way, a lead-car tour is the simpler choice.
2. Real GT-R or Skyline, automatic or manual. Several companies rent the ER34 Skyline, the non-GT-R model, sometimes fitted with a GT-R body kit. Samurai Car Japan says so clearly. If you want the RB26-engined BNR34 GT-R, check that the listing says "GT-R" and not just "R34" or "Skyline", and check whether that specific car is automatic or manual.
3. Pickup location. Pickup ranges from Shibuya to Matsudo and Noda in Chiba. ONLY JDM, Ichioku and Omoshiro each have more than one pickup point, and each car page names the one the car is collected from. Check the place named on the car's page and budget the travel time there and back.
4. Total cost, not the day rate. Add tax where prices are shown before tax, the distance charge, the damage waiver and the NOC, and make sure your card can take the deposit hold. What one day in a GT-R costs works through four examples.
5. Eligibility. You need a 1949 Geneva Convention IDP or an official Japanese translation with your home license, the minimum age and license years for the car, and a credit card in the driver's name. Check you can legally drive in Japan explains the documents.

2. Ichioku Tours: a factory R34 GT-R V-spec in Shibuya

Ichioku rents from three pickup points in Shibuya. Each car page names its own: most cars, including the R34 GT-R V-spec, from the Shibuya IYF Building car park at 4-1 Udagawa-cho; the R32 GT-R and JZA80 Supra from the Shibuya KI Building car park at 1-16-9 Shibuya; and the R35 GT-R NISMO from its Shibuya head office in Kamiyama-cho.

• R34 GT-R V-spec (6MT): ¥120,000 for 23 hours, from 1:00 pm to 12:00 pm the next day. Pickup times are fixed and the rental cannot be extended. The company lists two R34 GT-R V-specs at this price.
• Other cars, each for 23 hours: R35 GT-R NISMO (6AT) ¥55,000; R32 GT-R (5MT) and JZA80 Supra (5MT) ¥60,000; Honda NSX (4AT) ¥70,000; ER34 Skyline (5MT) and FD3S RX-7 (4AT) ¥50,000.
• Mileage: ¥100 per km is added when you return the car. The car pages do not mention any free distance.
• Coverage: basic insurance and CDW are included. The NOC is not: its FAQ gives ¥300,000 if you drive the car back to the garage and ¥1,000,000 otherwise.
• Eligibility and payment: 23+, with an IDP or translation, passport and credit card, all originals. Debit cards are not accepted, and you pay by credit card when you book.
• Booking and cancellation: book from 6 months ahead up to the day before. Cancellation is free 14 days or more before, then 30%, 50% and finally 100% of the fee. If you are more than 10 minutes late for pickup, the booking is cancelled without refund.
• Rules: the cars carry GPS. Racing on tracks, gymkhanas or mountain passes carries a ¥1,000,000 fine.
• Not stated: whether prices include tax, and a deposit.
• Also offers: self-drive tours to Daikoku PA from Shibuya, sold on its separate tour site.

3. Omoshiro Rent-a-Car: modern JDM cars from six Tokyo stores

Omoshiro is a sports and open-top car rental chain. Each car belongs to one store and cannot be moved to another store or dropped elsewhere, so pick the car first and then note its store. Japanese performance cars in its Tokyo stores include:

• GT-R: there is no GT-R in the Tokyo stores. The R34 GT-R (BNR34, 6MT) is at the Noda head office in Chiba, which is closed on Mondays: ¥54,000 for 6 hours, ¥68,000 for 9 hours, ¥95,000 for 24 hours, with no mileage limit.
• Hotel delivery: the Bancho-Hanzomon store delivers to major Tokyo hotels for an extra fee. It works by appointment only and does not take same-day bookings.
• Unstaffed stores: at Shibuya-Higashi, Yutenji and Higashi-Nippori, staff come only for pickup and return, so book ahead.
• From Narita: Higashi-Nippori is a 36-minute Skyliner ride from Narita Airport to Nippori, according to the store page.
• Costs on the R34: CDW ¥4,400, extra drivers ¥4,400 per 24 hours, ETC toll card ¥550 per 24 hours. The NOC is ¥250,000, or ¥500,000 plus towing if the car cannot be driven.
• Eligibility: 23+ with 3 years' license. Pay online with a credit card in the renter's name; no debit or prepaid cards.
• Rules: circuit driving is prohibited, and drifting is prohibited anywhere.
• Tax: the car and store pages do not say whether prices include tax. The company's Japanese legal notice lists consumption tax as a charge on top of the price.
• Not stated: a deposit amount.

5. Samurai Car Japan: the R34 look for less

Samurai Car Japan rents four R34 Skylines fitted with GT-R body kits from Shibuya Station. The company states that they are mechanically regular Skylines, not factory GT-Rs.

• Day rental: ¥65,000 to ¥85,000 for one day and ¥110,000 to ¥145,000 for two, depending on the car. One Bayside Blue car is manual; the others are automatic.
• 3-hour lead-car plan: ¥50,000 to ¥70,000, ending at Daikoku PA. Fuel and tolls are included on this plan.
• Eligibility: 23+, with an IDP or translation, passport and credit card.
• Deposit: a ¥100,000 hold on your credit card.
• Not stated: the mileage allowance and whether prices include tax.
• Good for: the R34 look in automatic, at a lower price than a real GT-R.

Lead-car tours: you drive, a guide leads

Samurai Car Japan also sells a 3-hour lead-car plan, and ONLY JDM sells 4-hour self-drive night tours, both listed above. Ichioku sells self-drive tours to Daikoku PA from Shibuya on its tour site. Some manufacturer-run rentals, such as MOTORSPORT by KINTO in Odaiba, rent GR86, GR Yaris and GR Supra models, but their official page does not say whether foreign license holders can rent, so they are not included here. What one day in a GT-R costs

Below is the published price for one rental day with the optional damage waiver added, assuming you drive 200 km. These are not quotes. Fuel, tolls, parking and any damage charges are extra.

Two things this table does not show:

• The deposit. It is held, not charged, but it reduces the credit you can use on your trip. It ranges from ¥50,000 to ¥200,000 where the company states it.
• The NOC. The damage waiver does not cover the non-operation charge, the fee for the time a damaged car is off the road. On a GT-R it runs from ¥100,000 to ¥1,000,000 depending on the company and the damage. Ask whether an NOC waiver is available before you choose.

Choose by where you are staying and what you want to drive

• You land at Haneda, or are staying near it. ONLY JDM's Haneda Airport Store, in Omori-minami, is the nearest pickup in this list.
• You land at Narita. Omoshiro's Higashi-Nippori store is by Nippori Station, on the Skyliner line from Narita.
• You are staying in Shibuya or Shinjuku and have one day. Ichioku rents from three pickup points in Shibuya, Samurai Car Japan hands over its cars at Shibuya Station, and Tokyo Supercars' Daikoku experience starts in Shibuya. Omoshiro's Bancho-Hanzomon store is next to Ichigaya Station and can deliver to major hotels for a fee.
• You want a real R34 GT-R with a manual gearbox. Car Rental Tokyo (Matsudo), Ichioku (Shibuya) and Omoshiro (Noda) rent one. Tokyo Supercars sells R34 GT-R driving experiences, and JDM TOUR offers an R34 GT-R V-spec on its guided drive.
• You only drive automatics. ONLY JDM's R35 GT-R, Ichioku's R35 GT-R NISMO, Omoshiro's GR Supra RZ and GR Yaris RZ, most of Samurai Car Japan's R34 Skylines, and JDM TOUR's ER34 Skylines and R35 GT-R are automatic.
• You are heading for Hakone or Mt Fuji. Check the distance allowance against your route. Omoshiro's R34 has no mileage limit. Car Rental Tokyo includes 250 km on the R34 and ONLY JDM 200 km per 24 hours, and after that each kilometre is charged. Ichioku charges ¥100 for every kilometre.

Check you can legally drive in Japan

No company can let you drive without one of these. Japan's National Police Agency recognises two routes for short-term visitors:

1. An International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, carried with your home license. Permits issued under the 1926 Paris, 1943 Washington or 1968 Vienna conventions are not valid in Japan.
2. A license from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco or Taiwan, carried with an official Japanese translation. These six use a translation instead of an IDP.

You can drive for one year from the day you land in Japan, or until your permit or license expires, whichever comes first.

If you need a translation, note that JAF (the Japan Automobile Federation) accepts applications online only and only from within Japan, and you print the translation once at a convenience store in Japan. For the six countries above, it gives an average of 2 to 3 business days, so apply as soon as you arrive and leave a gap before your rental day. The Tokyo police also accept translations made by your license authority or your country's embassy or consulate in Japan, and ADAC for German licenses.

Some countries that signed the Geneva Convention do not issue the Geneva-format permit, so their IDPs are refused in Japan. France, Belgium and Monaco are on that list, which is why they use the translation route. Check the Tokyo police list before you apply for anything. Bring original documents: your home license, the paper IDP or translation, and your passport. Car Rental Tokyo, Ichioku and Omoshiro state that copies are not accepted. Omoshiro also asks to see the entry stamp in your passport. If you enter Japan through the automated gates, ask the staff for a stamp as you pass, or you may not be able to rent.

Before you book

• Documents: confirm your IDP or translation is valid for Japan, and that you will have the originals with you on the day.
• Card: bring a credit card in the driver's name with enough limit for the rental and the deposit.
• Transmission: check that the specific car you book is automatic or manual. Do not assume from the model name.
• Every driver: check each additional driver's age and license years as well as your own, and register them before you set off.
• Costs: check the mileage allowance, the excess charge, the damage waiver, the NOC, the fuel policy and the late-return rules.
• Tolls: most expressways around Tokyo are tolled. Ask whether an ETC toll card is available and how tolls are settled.
• If there is an accident: call the police on 110 and then the rental company, even for a minor scrape. The Japan Rent-a-Car Association lists failing to contact both, or an accident by someone not registered as a driver, as cases where the rental insurance does not apply.
• Legitimacy: Japanese rental cars carry a わ or れ character on the number plate. In January 2025, Japan Today reported the arrest of a Tokyo tour operator over illegally modified sports cars used for night tours for visitors. The suspect denied the allegations. If a company cannot show a rental business registration or uses private plates, do not book.

Frequently asked questions

Can tourists rent a JDM car in Tokyo?

Yes, if you hold a 1949 Geneva Convention IDP with your home license, or a license from one of the six translation countries with an official Japanese translation. Car Rental Tokyo, Ichioku, Omoshiro, Tokyo Supercars and Samurai Car Japan list these documents on their pages, and JDM TOUR asks for valid driving documents for Japan.

Which international driving permit is valid in Japan?

Only a paper permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Permits issued under the 1926 Paris, 1943 Washington or 1968 Vienna conventions are refused.

Which countries need a Japanese translation instead of an IDP?

Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan. JAF issues translations through an online application that works only from within Japan, averaging 2 to 3 business days for these six. You print the translation at a convenience store in Japan.

How long can I drive in Japan on an IDP?

For one year from the day you land in Japan, or until your permit or license expires, whichever comes first.

Do I need an entry stamp in my passport?

Omoshiro requires one: its license page says you cannot rent without the stamp. If you use the automated immigration gates, ask the staff for a stamp as you pass.

Can I rent a JDM car with an automatic-only license?

Yes, if you choose an automatic car. ONLY JDM's R35 GT-R, Ichioku's R35 GT-R NISMO, Omoshiro's GR Supra RZ, most of Samurai Car Japan's R34 Skylines, and JDM TOUR's ER34 Skylines and R35 GT-R are automatic. Manual cars at Car Rental Tokyo and ONLY JDM require a manual license held for 3 years.

What is the minimum age?

23 at Ichioku, Omoshiro, Samurai Car Japan and JDM TOUR, and for ONLY JDM's ER34. Car Rental Tokyo's R34 GT-R needs 25, and ONLY JDM's R35 GT-R and Tokyo Supercars' cars need 26.

Can I pay with a debit card?

Car Rental Tokyo, Ichioku and Omoshiro say no and ask for a credit card. ONLY JDM asks for a credit card in the renter's name, and Samurai Car Japan asks for a credit card. JDM TOUR checks a credit card for payment and as a deposit and recommends PayPal. Tokyo Supercars does not state a payment method, so check at booking.

How much is the deposit?

¥50,000 at Car Rental Tokyo, ¥50,000 to ¥200,000 at ONLY JDM depending on the car, and ¥100,000 at Tokyo Supercars and Samurai Car Japan. JDM TOUR takes a deposit on your credit card without stating the amount, and Ichioku and Omoshiro do not state one.

Is there a mileage limit?

It varies: 200 km per 24 hours at ONLY JDM, 250 km on a one-day R34 at Car Rental Tokyo, 50 km for a half day or 250 km for a day on Tokyo Supercars' R34 page, ¥100 for each km at Ichioku, and no limit on Omoshiro's R34. Samurai Car Japan does not state an allowance.

Can I rent a real R34 GT-R in Tokyo?

Yes. Car Rental Tokyo (Matsudo), Ichioku (Shibuya) and Omoshiro (Noda, Chiba) list the R34 GT-R for rental. Tokyo Supercars sells R34 GT-R driving experiences and quotes rentals on request, and JDM TOUR offers an R34 GT-R V-spec on its guided drive. Some other R34s are Skyline models with GT-R styling, so check the listing.

Can I drive the car to Daikoku PA?

None of the rental terms we read bans Daikoku PA by name. It is a public expressway parking area, not an event venue, and no company promises that it will be open or busy on a given night. JDM TOUR, ONLY JDM, Samurai Car Japan and Tokyo Supercars sell drives built around it.

Can I take a rental car on a circuit?

No. ONLY JDM, Ichioku, Omoshiro, Tokyo Supercars and Car Rental Tokyo all prohibit it, and Ichioku fines ¥1,000,000.

What happens if I have an accident?

Call the police on 110 and the rental company straight away, even for a minor scrape. Without a police report, the rental insurance may not apply. You may also owe the NOC, which the damage waiver does not cover.

How far ahead should I book?

Ichioku takes bookings from 6 months ahead up to the day before. Book early for weekend GT-R dates, but check the cancellation terms first. Ichioku cancels free of charge 14 days or more before, and Car Rental Tokyo up to 7 days before pickup. Tokyo Supercars needs bookings at least 72 hours ahead and does not refund cancellations made less than 72 hours before.
